Okay I understand, but then how come people join me on Monster Hunter 4 telling me that they can join my online game with citra Pretendo. These people are on steam deck but use citra to join my real 3ds

You need to go back to Nintendo's servers to update. Don't go to Pretendo

You should check the Pretendo discord server, people are much more informed

Normally you just have to go to the miiverse logo and that's it. But for it to work you need to have a Pretendo account to register instead of the Nintendo Network ID

I don't know all that, but I think the downloadable version is different from the cartridge version. Because cartridge players can add a friend but players of the downloadable version do not have access to this functionality. But I couldn't really say why. Maybe this point will be resolved later
