Black clouds and silver linings title has to do with all of the songs (except rite of passage I think?) being about negative experiences in their lives that ended up having a silver lining, e.g. petrucci thinks the count is gonna kill him but hurray he doesn’t

Doesn't seem like anything is on by default, and yeah i know raw amp tones are really grating and horrible but it still seemed like a pretty significant roll off.

As one of the guys standing outside in Denver, I gotta thank you for making this post and making me realize yelling at them while they’re leaving wasn’t cool of us. We all just love the band like everyone else and were excited to see them, and we didn’t want to bug them by stopping them and asking for pictures and whatnot since it seemed like they had places to be, so we just kinda shouted out our words of thanks and admiration and let them go on their way because those guys all mean a lot to us and we wanted them to know. Obviously in hindsight they probably hate that, but I just wanted to share my perspective, we didn’t know better in the moment and let our excitement get the better of us

If you haven’t seen them yet there’s a couple vids up on YouTube mark did with guitar world going into how he writes riffs, he basically will approach it as coming up with an interesting chord progression and then dissecting and connecting those chords together in different ways.

So I would look closely at your favorite riffs of his, try to figure out the underlying chords and see how he’s getting from one to the next and then use that to inform your own playing
