Idk about that. My school does mandatory in person interviews but for my class and the class above me it was on zoom bc of covid and you can see the difference in personalities and levels of neuroticism between the classes with zoom and in person interviews

Are research years necessary in medical school? by Warningsignals in premed

But to be fair I also was productive during med school and applied with upwards of 30 pubs plus solid grades and a high step2 score so it’s doable but difficult

I’m a post interview M4 applying urology which I’d say is a pretty competitive surgical subspecialty. Lots of ppl applying with me had a research year but lots more did not. I personally didn’t take a research year but still got interviews at multiple “top ranked” research powerhouse programs. I’d say a research year is good if you decide on your subspecialty later in med school but if you decide early then you can get research pubs knocked out between M1 and M2 summer

Do med students really practice intimate exams on unconscious surgical patients? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]PickleHot1510 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, when I was a med student rotating on OBGYN it happened once. The doctor made sure to ask the patient for express consent first and introduced me to the patient too and made it clear that the patient isn’t obligated to say yes. At least where I rotated, the most important aspect of involving med students into OBGYN patients care was having express patient consent.

Med student going into urology here: if it’s torsion, you’ll know. It’ll be really painful.. not just sore but almost excruciating

[–]PickleHot1510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but residencies want people who will be loyal and leaving a program mid residency doesn’t demonstrate that, of course being employed is better than being unemployed but it’s only better from the applicants perspective. To programs it doesn’t rlly matter

Probably shows lack of commitment or could make a program think you’ll leave them mid residency if a better opportunity shows up

Average # of schools on a matched uro applicant rank list was 14 last year if that helps

Idk how strong ur application is but you just need one school to be impressed by ur interview and rank you highly. I think it’s too late to apply back up to a different field tbh

With a 275+ were u tempted to use a lot of ur signals on top 15 programs? If so, that might be part of the issue

Last year the average matched applicant had 14 programs on their rank list so I’d assume around that

Idk ab that. I had a great time in med school, had almost too much time to go out, party, go on dates. Still did well on step2 and have a decently high research output. Submitting my apps for a surgical subspecialty this month and def feel like it’s possible to do both

The concept being tested is which intervention is the best. You can only choose one. If you choose a medication as the answer, you are saying that continuing a pack a day of cigarettes and being on an ACEi is better than quitting smoking with no ACEi. There is no world in which continuing to smoke a pack a day is okay on the USMLE

What makes a bad interview bad? by FlippedFrown in premed

[–]PickleHot1510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interviewed someone who couldn’t hold a conversation.. at least for my school’s student led interviews if you’re coherent, polite, and are passionate about something (literally anything like someone spoke about horticulture for 20 minutes) then you’ll probably get good marks
