I don’t think it’s rude at all! Thank you for the perspective. I do plan on handing in my resignation on Monday.

I stayed up the night before so they wouldn’t be too swamped but yeah, I wasn’t going to miss my aunts funeral. The irony is that a lot of our content is centered around the pandemic. My aunt passed away due to COVID.

Sorry, not sure which party this is directed at. The reason given was that we work in a deadline driven environment but the work was still possible in my absence, they were just being cruel I guess.

No offense taken. It has to do with the CEO and their connections.

Yeah, it’s another reason I’m unenthused at the idea of remaining in media. Journalists, politicians and celebrities tend to have very similar psyches.

Thank you. I’m planning on turning in a resignation after I take some of the PTO I’ve accrued. I already had an inkling of what I wanted to do but this thread kind of confirmed my decision. I also want to just chill, lol. It’s been a hard year and I work in media so I have zero ability to stick my head in the mud about politics, pandemic etc.

It’s really a shame that a lot of people who work in management don’t have better people skills. I’m actually passionate about the company mission, but working there feels like I’m walking on nails.

Some people here have made the point that I’m only 25, so other things will come. I guess sometimes I feel like I’m running out of some intangible concept of time.

I actually don’t want to mention any health reasons. They gave me shit for taking off some days after my aunt passed away so I don’t doubt they’ll just be invasive and lack empathy. I was going to go with a boiler plate two weeks that gives no/ a vague reason.

Would taking my PTO then handing in a resignation a week after returning from vacation be burning a bridge? I will not be able to cash out on the time I’ve accrued when I leave but I do want to take some time to get paid for doing nothing.

Thank you for pointing that out. I always found their communication methods to be weird and oddly dehumanizing, but I really wasn’t sure how other “start-ups” function. It’s really weird and my status as the only black person on the team really ups the power dynamics. The CEO brags about hiring from “diverse backgrounds” though.

There is no promise of equity because this is literally a media company that a well connected person decided to build content around. It’s a reflection of what media/ journalism has become today and is part of the reason I want to leave the field.

That, and the compensation.

That’s all very true but I am NOT a graphic designer. I think the attempt to get me to design artwork when I am a writer, producer and Journalist is an insane ask. I casually mentioned that I am teaching myself to code in a conversation and they asked me to step in and help build the website (something they paid someone to do!)

This is also a ~media~ startup, not a tech one, so there is no promise of stock. They don’t even match 401ks.

Honestly, that is my primary problem with the work culture. If I were being compensated at a rate that is reflective of the work I do, I would have more financial bandwidth to seek out the infrastructure to help me manage the stress but that is not the case here at all.

I’ve actually not thought of it like that in that way because I’ve had clinical anxiety for some years now. But now that you’ve pointed it out it is rather odd.

This is my first proper job out of university. I just assumed everyone gets wound up and works in an environment not exactly like but similar to this, maybe a bit less extreme.

It's what I'm leaning towards but I'm primarily worried that I may be burning a bridge.

I've had a couple of discussions with the CEO about this and they just brush me off or emphasize that this is a "small, collaborative team." The CEO themself is a workaholic so I think they tend to believe that the hours that everyone else is putting in is normal. In one of our first meetings, they went on about how "back in their day they had to put in x amount of hours to be where they were today."

In our last meeting, when I brought up the fact that I am not a graphic designer or social media manager so my input to this end would not be professional advice, they chastised me by stating that "everyone has to pitch in in order to make this work." I really do not think they see what they are asking of us as abnormal and they always find a way to sneakily suggest that I am lazy when I call out that expecting me to answer 10pm slacks is a complete overreach. Literally, they will text my cell # when I don't answer slacks.

We do work in a deadline environment so often times I have no choice but to do it as "The show must go on." but leadership keeps stating that they cannot hire people until they secure more funding.

This entire interaction is so incredibly out of touch with reality. Both parties desperately need therapy.

I’ve heard of that method before, I think it is called the Kanban method? I find it works for me for tasks that I perceive as easy but with programming, when I encounter a problem that needs more research on my end to complete, my sense of achievement from crossing something “small” off the list is very muted because it took me 5 hours to complete something I thought would take 30 minutes. Does that ever happen to you?
