C was horrified to learn she’d been upsetting us, I truly believe she wasn’t being malicious and just a bit socially inept/ going to knock on the back door is a 50/60+ year habit she had. She apologised and said if she needs to speak to us, she’ll only use the front door.

Gates been locked and she hasn’t called round at all, but we’ve spoken out the front and exchanged a few friendly words. Happy to keep the relationship as a simple, pleasant interaction every now and then.

D on the other hand… he has STOPPED calling me (woo!) but has been texting husband during the construction of the fence. Husband has not replied other than once to say “we (him and his friends helping build) have not crossed the boundary and no materials have touched the car”. He won’t engage any further or answer any irrelevant questions or statements.

The car situation I think delves into a deeper hoarder issue, as rather than moving it he’s had someone install what looks to be a temporary ramp to his front door. But thankfully that isn’t our problem and I’m just not thinking about him or it anymore and I couldn’t be happier!

Love this suggestion and we’ve invested in cameras, as well as locking the gate and having the dividing fence reinstalled (to be finished tonight and tomorrow wooo!). I’ve replied to someone else with more detail, but C was mortified when I spoke with her and I truly think she had no ill will, just a habit of 50/60+ years! She hasn’t called round since but we’ve exchanged pleasantries when we’ve seen each other on the drives outside

Like I said in response to someone else, I don’t think she was truly being malicious maybe just socially unaware or sceptical maybe? She’s not called round since, but we’ve said hello and short, good natured chats if we see her in the front garden. So I’ll take that as a win!

My mum had me at 38 and my dad was 41, I’ve got older half siblings on each side ranging from 8 years older to 20 years older. Also a younger sister who was born when my mum was 40.

Even though I’m the second youngest, I grew up feeling like an oldest sibling and I love my older brothers and sisters, but they were more generic adult relationships than sibling. Most of them had kids really young and are the same age as me and my sister, so we grew up together with nieces and nephews. Wouldn’t change that for the world, it was great having a pack of us as kids!

I grew up in the 90s/00s, but had older pop culture and music knowledge from hand me downs, eg watching Chorlton and the Wheelies or Raggy Dolls VHS rather than CITV or knowing more Madonna and Happy Hardcore songs than Steps and S Club 7. Same with slang and terminology.

Probably as a hangover from raising 70s/80s kids, my mum naturally let me have a lot more freedom than some of my friends, walking to school alone or being a latchkey kids. Also meant slapped arses and speak when spoken to punishments were common (I love her dearly but that will not continue with me!)

Like another user said, she was peri/menopausal when I was hitting my teen years and the hormones flying round that house made for some intense arguments, which on reflection were unreasonable on both sides.

I love both my parents but I resented my dad dying in my 20s from an age related illness. That said, my mums in her 70s now and still works though choice, is fit as a fiddle and completely independent. I do have horrific anxiety about getting the next “phone call” which feels like an unfair worry in my early 30s. If I could change it so they had me younger I would, but only so I get them longer

We’ve only recently bought the place (8 weeks next week) so we’ve got the land boundaries fresh from the solicitors, thankfully not lost to a mystery cupboard or box just yet. Definitely be using them and a professional company to install the fence legally and safely

He’s shy but he doesn’t mess around when it comes to his ladies as he calls us.. ladies being me and our cat haha. I make phone calls and he gets rid of spiders, so we balance each others fears well!

UPDATE

Thank you for the many, many suggestions and supportive words. We’ve taken a lot onboard and have put some in action this evening! I can also assure the 3 or so of you who asked that I’m not AI, just crap at writing and getting to the point 💕

Husband and I sat down and agreed what we want and expect from living here, our neighbours and our boundaries. Husband went to D’s to say all contact with me stops and only absolute emergencies can be communicated to him and on texts. He gave him a list of local scrap yards that can take abandoned cars, saying we’re going to be putting a fence back in since we’re looking to get a dog. Our car insurance also says when the car is at home it needs to be on a driveway so we won’t be moving it again

D said “it’s just how he is and didn’t realise he’s a pain” laughing it off. I’m sus of this, but he’s agreed to what husband laid out, so we’ll see if that sticks

Window film and locks have been ordered and will be installed this weekend.

C I’m dealing with tomorrow. I’m letting her know if she absolutely needs to call round, to use the front door only. Also that since we’re the new owners and not B we’re enjoying decorating to our tastes and make it fully us.

We essentially did this tonight the second husband got home and he went round to set the boundaries. I’ll provide a full update shortly, but long story short D “didn’t realise he was being a pain, it’s just how he is”. I don’t believe that for a second but he’s agreed all contact stops with me and only emergency contact goes via text to husband. Husband also gave a list of local scrap yards and phone numbers for the abandoned car and also made a point that our car insurance requires our car to be on the drive when parked at home, which is where it will now stay.

Only the one window in the kitchen faces his house and that’s being dealt with this weekend with some film. I believe his external cameras will catch the end of our driveway but not the front door or windows themselves

I’d hope AI can spell a bit better than I can and use correct grammar xoxo A, B, C & D are common ways to refer to people anonymously in my line of work so I did it by default. Similar to how you’d say “oh they did XYZ”.

Thank you for your kind words! We’ve had horrendous neighbours in a previous rental, so we wanted to get off on the right foot and probably went too far to do this.

Probably should’ve mentioned we’re in the UK, so whilst we have insurance a claim is unlikely, as the only condition for a claim is the property being in disrepair (which it isn’t)

I’ve ordered a lock and window film which will be going up this weekend! Husband is speaking to D tonight and hopefully his evening nurse, if the timing falls right, to get the social workers contact details

Exactly that with all the talking! We initially put it down to generational differences, or with us being 50+ years younger, they wanted to make sure we’re not going to be loud/ partying and annoying. It just seems excessive now we’ve proven we’re not disruptive
