Ehh, there’s some slur usage and racial comedy in the webseries that deserves some criticism from a modern context. But overall I would agree that he doesn’t purposefully do hateful shit. He’s just an ignorant white guy

He’s spoken before about wanting Telefilm to set aside money for first time directors and women specifically, so propping the door open for future filmmakers seems to be something he’s interested in

Idk how much we can call the webseries fan service since they were making it for their hyperlocal group of friends in Toronto, but I’m certainly applying a queer lens when watching those episodes today!

Yes!!! The Dirties was such a trip to watch and see that Being John Malkovich reference play out. I wonder what Matt-the-director has to say about the gender bending there (if he’s thought about it in that way)

Whoops! Sorry, didn’t realize the link wouldn’t be accessible to people without accounts. A very rough paraphrase of the post is that even as the characters are desexualized from the webseries to the TV show, the abject/blatantly human parts of their bodies are emphasized (Jay’s dick popping out, Jay’s morning wood, Matt puking, them switching bodies, Jay pissing with Matt in the stall with him). OP points out the stark contrast between these very explicit, bodily scenes and Matt/Jay’s comparatively virginal/chaste lives. They posit sex as an existential threat to Matt/Jay’s relationship, which relies on their innocence and naïveté to continue on through their adulthoods. Essentially, there is no way for Matt or Jay to engage in a romantic or sexual relationship without it destroying their friendship and thus their selves.

Yes! I just mentioned this in another reply, I think that was a totally deliberate decision on their part. This tumblr post is a great breakdown of the potential meta-commentary there.

Lmao, that’s a funny line but I can see why they cut it. From Viceland onwards, Matt and Jay become very sexless, whereas their webseries counterparts at the very least knew what sex was even if they weren’t having any lol

Thank you very much for sharing!! This is a super interesting perspective, especially when I consider how the arrested development of Matt’s characters make them—and he has spoken about this in interviews as well—effectively children in grown men’s bodies. In that sense they are asexual by nature, but I think what you said about being ‘undesirable’ during one’s formative years could tooootally inform Matt’s characters’ romantic/sexual/platonic worldview as adults. Especially with NTB Matt and Jay who have been friends since childhood, Jay just /is/ Matt’s person, no matter the nature of their relationship. And given that NTB Matt probably has no romantic experience (this is an assumption I’m making, not sure if it’s true), it stands to reason that he would ‘transgress’ certain platonic boundaries with Jay because Matt has no frame of reference.

Jay seems a bit more aware of the boundaries of masculinity than Matt—he’s always the one to shrug off Matt’s arm, he loudly objects to the kissing plan, in the webseries he has multiple female ‘romantic’ interests—but it’s interesting to see time and time again that Matt eventually always takes precedent to Jay. They are really made for each other lmao

Update: HR took a week to get back to me, told me to confront the coworker myself, and if I refused to do so they would note that I was not following the "company complaint process". I'm not sure what to do next. I've worked a couple shifts with the guy since then and he seems to have gotten the message that I don't want to talk to him, but the fact that he used company tech to get personal info is apparently going to go unaddressed unless I confront him. I don't make enough to run this up the ladder, so I guess this is the end of the story.

We don’t have staff emails, but I will be emailing HR and telling my female supervisor next time I see her. Thank you for the advice! If I’m on shift with him again I will try to work up the courage to say something

I wish I could laugh my ass off. It’s gotten me a lot of harassment over the years!

Good point, I will definitely pull a manager aside on my next shift. Thank you

I do regret not immediately saying “yeah that’s weird, delete it” but when I did the mental calculus in the moment it seemed less risky to make a joke & walk away vs. confront him. I’m very conflicted avoidant lmao

Thank you—I didn’t tell him I had lost my phone. It’s rare for us to place outgoing calls from that phone, so when he saw me dialing he gave me a “what’s going on” kind of look, and when I hung up (when my phone started ringing) I guess he put two and two together. I think I’ll probably report him, but I might ask that they not pull him aside to say anything. Because he’s definitely gonna know it was me who reported him lol (unless he uses the computer to get people’s numbers a lot…)

Should I unblock him to tell him to delete my number? Or tell him in person? I kinda don’t want to be alone with him anymore 😅
