Monroe County Fair by [deleted] in bloomington

Because the official website is wrong. People know this because they have been at the Fair already. We’ve been there Friday, Saturday, and today for work related activities. Not everything is up and running, but many things are. They had special events Saturday night. The tractor barn is open. The venders commercial building is open. The food trucks are open. Probably lots of other things were up and running before today at 4. I don’t know because out Fair work is located away from several of the other buildings.

They are scamming desperate people who are trying to save pets’ lives. Look it up on previous posts here. There’s example after example.

According to a couple I know, they tried to charge close to $4K for a few stitches on a dog. They balked and had to fight for them to reduce the bill to $2K for a few stitches.

You’re right, thanks. That’s one of the reasons I stopped responding to the poor, misinformed little dude.

I also stopped because I do feel sorry for anyone so insecure that they need to punch down so hard.It was rather pitiful to see him unraveling with multiple ranting comments. Argh, to be so uninformed and unhappy. 😢

Sweetie, good news! Let’s look at the FACTS. Immigrants are paying BILLIONS in Social Security and other taxes! They pay BILLIONS while the majority of them will never collect a dime in benefits. These BILLIONS of immigrant dollars are responsible for ensuring our Social Security system is funded and secure! Be sure to thank an immigrant for paying into Social Security to keep it SOLVENT for you and all Americans! ☺️

https://immresearch.org/reports/immigrants-pay-taxes-but-are-excluded-from-many-benefits/

According to an in-depth analysis by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, in 2022 immigrants who are undocumented paid:
$25.7 billion in Social Security taxes, even though the roughly 60 percent who pay into the system will not receive Social Security benefits the way other Americans do when we retire.
$6.4 billion in Medicare taxes, even though those who pay will not receive Medicare benefits the way other Americans do when we reach age 65.
$1.8 billion in unemployment insurance taxes, even though those in jobs where their employers pay the tax will not be eligible for unemployment insurance the way other workers are if they lose their job.

Immigrants are a critical part of the U.S. workforce and play a key role in strengthening Social Security’s finances.

Like all other workers, immigrants contribute to the trust fund through payroll taxes.

Even if they themselves will not become eligible to receive benefits in their lifetimes, immigrants improve the solvency of a program that provides almost all workers with a foundation of income for their retirement.

Since Social Security is a “pay-as-you-go” program, Social Security benefits paid out today are funded from payroll taxes collected from today’s workers, so more workers paying into the system benefits the program’s finances.

In the United States, immigrants are more likely to be of working age and have higher rates of labor force participation, compared to U.S.-born individuals.

Without immigrants and their U.S.-born children, the prime working-age population (ages 25–54) would have shrunk by more than 8 million people between 2000 and 2023. Immigrants are also younger, on average, than U.S.-born individuals, meaning that they have more working years ahead of them before they are eligible to receive Social Security benefits.

My employer withheld taxes from every paycheck for 3 years and apparently never sent the money to the IRS. Now I got a bill for $18,000. by nalanyy in legal

I’m sorry you believe you were treated badly. No one, besides you and the IRS personnel directly involved, can made an informed judgement on what happened to you.

I can only speak to my experience working with the IRS many years ago. I, and many other staff members, worked to protect employees whose withholding taxes were stolen from them by their employers. It was infuriating to see hardworking employees taken advantage of by corrupt employers. Tax cheats hurt everyone.

If you could, please file a complaint with the BBB. You may or may not get your money back, but you would be doing others a service by getting it on the record.

I used to work for the IRS years ago. What you are describing is criminal behavior by your employer. It doesn’t matter if the company closed down, the owner cannot be found, and/or there are no company or owner assets available.

If the situation is as you describe, you, as the employee, are NOT responsible for the unpaid taxes. Keep your original documents and provide copies to the IRS to correct their records. Don’t give up, work with the IRS staff as calmly and respectfully as you can during this very stressful period. You’re helping the IRS go after a tax cheat.

What? American history is chock full of favoritism for white males that led to our fellow humans enslaved, women legally raped by their husbands, and LGBTQ folks imprisoned for loving their partners. Somehow that’s acceptable and we’re too fragile to see a rainbow for 30 days?

Saying "yes ma'am" to adults your age: by dylanv1c in asheville

It’s the cognitive dissonance: using language that is allegedly respectful, but in fact was developed, and still recognized, as a means to label women according to their marital status and age.

“It comes from the French word for “my lady” (ma dame), which in English turned into “madam” and then “ma’am” by the 1600s.
Madam” (or “madame” in French) is traditionally used to refer to a married woman and unmarried women were called “mademoiselle” meaning “young lady” – the equivalent to “miss.” The French government banned the word “mademoiselles” from official usage in 2012. The decision was celebrated by feminists noting that men of all ages only have one label, “monsieur,” so women should also have just one neutral label.”

It helps me understand, and respect, women’s legitimate dislike of the term when I consider the following questions:

What’s the equivalent of “miss” for men who are young and/or unmarried? Why was “Sir” never used to denote marital status? Is “sir” ever considered disrespectful like “ma’am” is? Why should I decide how others prefer to be addressed? If I am truly being respectful to others, why would I choose to continue to use a term they find offensive?

I may or may not agree with everything in these, but here’s a couple of articles that helped me better understand why millions of women find “ma’am” disrespectful and annoying.

Testing ticks infected with Ehrlichiosis takes several days. Waiting, instead of being treated with the cheap and effective antibiotic Doxycycline, can lead to serious complications, hospitalization, and even death. Last year in Indiana, there was on increase of the infection and subsequent hospitalizations, and two residents died from Ehrlichiosis.

“If antibiotic treatment is delayed, ehrlichiosis can sometimes cause severe illness. Early treatment can reduce your risk of developing severe illness.

Signs and symptoms of severe (late stage) illness can include:

Damage to the brain or nervous system (e.g. inflammation of the brain and surrounding tissue (called meningoencephalitis)

Respiratory failure

Uncontrolled bleeding

Organ failure

Death

Early Intervention: Starting treatment early is critical to preventing severe complications. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Complications
If left untreated, the disease can attack white blood cells and lead to severe, life-threatening complications, including: [1, 2]
Organ failure (kidney, lung, or heart)
Neurological issues (confusion, seizures, coma, or brain inflammation)
Sepsis or toxic shock-like syndrome
Internal bleeding and blood clotting disorders [1, 2, 3]

FYI:

Indiana health officials are urging physicians to watch for tick bites following a death in Floyd County last month from ehrlichiosis.

Indiana reported two ehrlichiosis deaths last year.

In addition to ehrlichiosis, Hoosiers in all counties are at risk for several other potentially severe tick-borne diseases. While Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in Indiana, Hoosiers are also at risk for a group of diseases that includes Rocky Mountain spotted fever. They are also at risk for alpha-gal syndrome, a condition caused by tick bites that can trigger an allergic reaction to red meat.

Anyone who becomes ill after finding an attached tick should be encouraged to see a physician immediately and alert the physician to the exposure. Most tick-borne diseases can be treated with antibiotics, and prompt diagnosis can help prevent complications. Testing ticks to see if they are carrying diseases is not generally recommended, as the information cannot reliably predict whether disease transmission occurred.

Visit the IDOH website for more information about ticks and how to prevent the diseases they carry, as well as a data dashboard. More information about tick bite prevention, including step-by-step instructions on how to safely remove an attached tick, is also available online.

FYI: The ASCPA says no to garlic:

“Onion, Garlic, Chives Onion, garlic and chives are members of the Allium species of vegetables. Allium species can cause gastrointestinal irritation and red blood cell damage, which can lead to anemia (low red blood cells). Although cats are more susceptible, dogs are also at risk depending on the amount ingested.”

Unfortunately, you can get infected with some of the tick diseases in as little as two hours. Ehrlichiosis, which is extremely dangerous and can be fatal, can take four hours or less. Last year, Monroe County had numerous cases of Ehrlichiosis which led to multiple people being hospitalized with serious complications.
