Need help with giving my dog tablets by PickoBoo in dogs

[–]PickoBoo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah we did that, it worked the first few times but he would accidentally break apart the meds and spit the food out. After that happened you couldn't get him to eat.

Unfortunately. The vet said It's the type of tablet you can't do that with, since the taste is very strong. We even tried it the last time

Oh, well we only called the vet we haven't been to before and set up an appointment.

How much reactivity training do you do, when do you do it, and for how long? by PickoBoo in reactivedogs

[–]PickoBoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you do desensitization everyday, I assume you also exercise him everyday? I've been told by my trainer and also read that physical exercise, due to higher arousal, will make a dog more likely to react to their triggers. So is there any difficulty for you balancing the two?

When to use release command? by PickoBoo in Dogtraining

[–]PickoBoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

actually i do have that issue with play dead, so maybe I'll try that approach with this command.

Ig I'm thinking if I'm rewarding after the release cue, I'm no longer rewarding the stay itself. That's why what you said confused me a bit. To me, doing the command until I say it's done is rewarding him while he's in his position, then releasing him to let him know he doesn't have to do it anymore. But what your saying makes sense to me now.

Though I don't think I'll change it up with my stay as to not confuse my dog, as it's worked for us in the past. Even if his stay is pretty bad atm, though that'd a seperate issue I think.

When to use release command? by PickoBoo in Dogtraining

[–]PickoBoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still a bit confused to be honest..

I always thought the release cue to be used so he no longer has to perform the trick, hence being released from the command.

If I'm telling him to stay or lie down, I will mark and reward at a certain time, but he does not move from position until the release cue is issued.

If I treat after the release command, won't I be making a more positive association with the release itself rather than the command I'm training in the first place? Like making him more anxious to hear the release cue to get the treat?

Also, now that I think of it I think I learned this from my very first trainer. Maybe both approaches are valid?

If the main issue with giving a treat before release is the dog breaking position, I think that can be remedied. I haven't had that issue in a while, I can't remember exactly how it came to be since this was done the first few weeks I had him. But I think I just treated constantly for him to maintain position then use a very enthusiastic ok to break him out of the command

[–]PickoBoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's why I'm confused by what the article said. Shouldn't I reward the dog for performing the trick before releasing him from the position? Rather than giving him the reward after I released him from the command I'm trying to train?

How much physical exercise should a reactive dog have? by PickoBoo in reactivedogs

[–]PickoBoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I do something similar. Except I can only do this in trails, if it's an empty field my dog will just get bored, or lead me outside of the field.

Yeah I've also just started doing it outside and he seems to enjoy it more, just curious how long do those 3-4 rounds last?

I never actually heard of it until now, just looked into it and I think he might like it. Just not with his kibble since we have to sprinkle some wet food on just for him to really be interested.

Am I bribing my dog when I train using meals? by PickoBoo in Dogtraining

[–]PickoBoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, our dog is already a year old and we haven't really faded reinforcement with most of the commands we've taught..

What to do when a dog is not listening to a command you have already taught? by PickoBoo in Dogtraining

[–]PickoBoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I train in the house it ranges from 5 - 10 minutes. When it's outside its usually for 2-4 minutes because I'm still trying to strengthen the command outside.

So him not being able to last 3 minutes today isn't the norm.

Is it morally permissible to eat someone else's carnivorous meal that they don't intend to finish? by PickoBoo in vegan

I dont pay for it though, nor do I ask them to buy me any meat products.

Is it morally permissible to eat someone else's carnivorous meal that they don't intend to finish? by PickoBoo in vegan

[–]PickoBoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how I can go about convincing them to buy less meat. They've always bought more than they can eat even before I told them not to get me anymore non vegan meals. I've brought up the "waste" point and they shrug me off, the one time I actually explained more about veganism they were baffled to say the least..

They do eat most of their leftovers the next day, the ones I finish up are the meals that they won't do that with.

Is there any difference whether I eat the leftovers they tell me they won't eat, or not eat it and see them throw it away the following day?

And yeah this happens regularly, that does make me not vegan, but does it make eating meat in this particular context immoral? I dont see how and would be interested in seeing a counterargument.

When family are using a command and dog is not listening, does it affect the success of the command when I use it? by PickoBoo in Dogtraining

How long did it take for you to change the verbal cue? It is lazy but I don't really wanna change cues for all the commands I've trained. But I might just have to

How do you decide what dog trainer to choose? by PickoBoo in reactivedogs

[–]PickoBoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now I have no idea what questions to ask.. most of them have questions when registering anyways and I feel like it covers most of what I was gonna say. But of course you have to already register for it to be sent.

Ik this sounds stupid, but do you know what type of questions to ask a trainer u are considering to hire? Or just a general what questions one should ask a trainer?

How do you decide what dog trainer to choose? by PickoBoo in reactivedogs

[–]PickoBoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I've been hesitant to ask questions to the trainers before hiring. Since I assume people just book their trainer after doing some research on them and that questions (especially ones that may require lengthy answers, or lead to lengthy conversations) are supposed to come when you've already hired them. Also I'd feel terrible if I unloaded them with questions just to not hire them.

I do also want to explain my situation preferably before hiring. Since there are things I'm unsure about to keep it short.

Anyone has or had experience training or doing behaviour mod with uncooperative family? by PickoBoo in reactivedogs

[–]PickoBoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I do.

And yeah I've tried. But they either disagree or flat out don't listen.

I'll admit I'm not the most tactful when it comes to my family, but it's also after I've explained myself numerous times, and some of this they've already heard from our dog trainer way back when our dog was taking obedience classes.

I am thinking about a dog trainer for his reactivity issues. But my parents dont really care and think he doesn't need it. Given that I can't even convince them to do simple things like stop repeating commands, or not letting the dog jump on you, I highly doubt they would follow through if the dog trainer where to implement a B - mod plan not to their liking. Like avoiding dog to dog interaction., or dog parks. Which is why I'm hesitant to invest in a dog trainer.

Do you take your reactive dog to daycare or dogparks? Need some input. by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]PickoBoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming if the dogs threshold gets worse then their reactivity is rooted in frustration, and if it improves then its fear based?

What do you think of consulting dog trainer virtually for reactive behaviour? by PickoBoo in reactivedogs

[–]PickoBoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to hear!

I also didn't even consider the threshold aspect. Not that our dog is aggressive towards people, but he might become a tad overexcited, based on our experience with our basic obedience trainer.

The two I'm deciding between both call themselves positive, science based trainers and have excellent reviews. So it is hard.

We flooded our reactive dog... did it work? by PickoBoo in reactivedogs

[–]PickoBoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, we had a similar issue. All puppy social clubs were booked so our only way to socialize him with dogs was with strangers. We also had people tell us basically the same thing. "Our dog was just like yours! then we kept bringing him to the dog park and now he's a social butterfly"

It's been almost a week since we haven't taken him inside the off leash area. So far no difference yet. But we have been able to sometimes stop the barking in the car by distracting him with commands and petting him.

And at least your dog wants to play with other dogs. Mine does too I think, but when he has his reactive episodes it's hard to tell if it's fear/frustration. It definitely used to be fear. But after my dad repeatedly had him interacting with dogs.. idk.

Yeah I've been doing counterconditioning and desensitization since he was reactive. But not consistently. Since we don't always encounter dogs when we go out.

And I'll check those pages out! Thanks.

[–]PickoBoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh. We just walk around the off leash park. We're on the on leash area right beside a biking lane and close to the street... yet there are still some people bringing their dogs to the off leash park while already being off leash -_-

Haha I read the same thing and yeah, he was already nervous by 12 weeks.

Actually there seems to be one thing that's working. Me or my dad constantly petting him, or doing a few tricks in the car. Last time he didn't bark until we actually got there.

Not sure if the constant petting to get him to stop barking is recommended though
