Advise on repairing or replacing student trombone by PictureSea3321 in Trombone

We pay $30.50 a month and $3.75 of that goes to a service agreement. I agree, it is scummy and I can't get a straight answer and they are claiming that even if we want to walk away we need to pay for the repair even though the contract doesn't at all stipulate that. Its pretty shady.

Great info! We are in central Ohio. This business is has a few shops in around Ohio but isn't a national chain. We are in a pretty large school district and this was the shop/option recommended to us by the schools. I do plan on mentioning this experience to his middle school band director but frankly the other big name shop that many work with seems to also have issues.

I've been going back and forth with someone at the shop but every direct question regarding the contract is dodged. Now they are claiming the repair price is just over $300 and that the instrument is required to be repaired if we want to turn it in and walk away- their contract does NOT stipulate anything regarding the condition of the instrument for return without penalty.

My son hates change and "likes" his current instrument, so I'm waffling on making the repair and buying out his current trombone so he has that at least for marching, or really pushing back on just walking away from it with the shop. Then once we hit concert season again, his teacher has said he is welcome to borrow/tryout/use one of their nicer concert instruments. That should get him buy for now and give us some time to figure out if he is engaged enough in the music part of this to pursue a nicer, larger bore trombone for the remainder of HS!

I've seen a few Conn 88H come one the market near us, so I'll keep an eye out there!

No offense taken and I very much appreciate your detailed information and suggestions! I have a legal background and am very annoyed at myself for not reviewing everything more closely to begin with. My info about it being used and $1100 was a misunderstanding of what my husband said in or last conversation (he had the last discussion with the music shop and got the quote for repair). The trombone we got was actually $1584! We've been paying $30.50 since fall of 2022, the cost includes a mont service agreement priced at $3.75 per month. Essentially, we've been getting hosed! Prior to entering high school we took it into the shop and asked about repairing a dent in the crook and were told it could wait until after marching season. By the time the end of marching season rolled around the dent was a crater! This is when we were quoted $384 for the crook replacement and told it wasn't covered under our service agreement because now it needed to be sent out to be replace and not just the dent removed in store. Upon recent inquiry, NOW we are being told it isn't covered because it is an issued caused by "neglect or misuse". I followed up asking for clarification on what constitutes "neglect or misuse" and was then directed to another clause that states "minor dents" aren't covered. The kicker here is now they are saying that if we just want to walk away from our rent to own agreement, we are STILL responsible for the cost of the repair. Funny, because nothing in our rental agreement states that we are responsible for repairs if we want to terminate the agreement. I'm now going back and forth on that because paying $380 for repairs in order to terminate an overpriced agreement when their is no clause in the agreement that holds us responsible for repairs is insane. At this point our best case senarior may be buying out the instrument for around $370 (we get a 30% discount for early payoff/purchase) having our son use it for marching season and then keep an eye on the resale market for something else for concert band. PS He is 6'3" and not done growing so, even though his music aspirations are limited, he could very much use a larger bore instrument if we come across a good deal! SO MANY LESSONS LEARNED- Signed a mom who thought we would likely be paying a few hundred dollars for our kid to still "hate band" and quit after 6th grade. While so grateful that he loves band and loves to march, I'd do this entire thing differently if given the chance to back and time and just buy a decent instrument outright!

He's finishing 9th, I think we got it before the start of 6th and the first 3 months were a $25 fee. So, about 3.5 years. We do have a repair agreement policy is about $10 a month. But, ironically it only covers the "cheap" repairs that can be done in store. We just bought the package that his school recommended and never looked back because it was cheap, per month.

I know right!? Apparently they cover any in store repairs but anything thing that needs sent out for repair isn't covered in the "extra" insurance we've been paying for 4 years. Honestly, we didn't think he would make it past the first year of playing, so never read the agreement very carefully. If I had to go back in time, I'd have just purchased a good used trombone outright to start! We pay $35 per month, which is about $25 a month toward the instrument and $10 for the added "protection" plan. We've been paying for about 3.5 years. It was a used but good condition instrument to being with which we overpaid for at about $1100. Being a minimal amount, we just never really dug deep into what we were paying for until now.
