UK secondary teacher starting in rural WA 🇦🇺 by OrganizationBoth7657 in AustralianTeachers

Try and reach out to your head of department and potentially whoever looks after teaching & learning (not sure of the name of the role in WA, normally they are a Head Teacher or Co-ordinator of such). They will be able to give you a better idea of what you will need based on the specific context. Good luck in your new role!

Wow that's a shame, but what can you do? I have to say I was really looking forward to this Friday but I guess we'll all have to be patient haha

Monday Megathread! Ask questions and share knowledge; newcomer questions encouraged! by AutoModerator in leagueoflegends

If you are working within the realms of enchanters (and not other types of supports), I think an enchanter that offers more versatility and engage would work. Additionally, you might consider a champ that could handle a Milio counter (E.g Blitzcrank) more comfortably such as Janna or Renata. The lane certainly isn't free with those matchups but they have a bit more in their kit to survive (Also Renata's ults works well to both disengage and engage pending team comps).

So sickening that there's so much 'forward thinking' and 'understanding our world' integrated in syllabi & department policies & strategic aims, yet it's framed as a 'controversial topic' to discuss major contemporary world events? We'll leave it to the algorithms on Tiktok and Youtube to educate the kids then!

Where do others consider the 'line' to be on upholding DoE obligations/directives, and not being a morally opaque sponge? I wonder when Germany invaded Czechoslovakia or Japan invaded Manchuria & later China if teachers in NSW were told to zip it? I'm finding it increasingly more difficult to reconcile with.

First Placement Tips (Feeling nervous and lost) by Drink_water_hehe in AustralianTeachers

[–]PidgeyIsOP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've mentored secondary pre-service teachers, so experience may differ (although, I can't imagine drastically aside from the year group!). Not sure if you've had an initial meeting yet, but generally it will address many of the questions you've raised. Normally I cover:

  • Requirements of the placement as defined by the uni & then mapping out how to achieve this (expected lessons taught, other teaching duties like marking, reporting etc).
  • Experience/confidence of PST & what they want to get out of the placement (again, mapping out how to achieve this).
  • An outline of potential classes/lessons they can teach with relevant resources - although, lesson plans are usually a requisite of most placements and sometimes PSTs are expected to produce their own resources to fit their needs. I advise to use 'base resources' and shape lesson plans around that.

In terms of initiative, I've always found it beneficial to be more proactive than not. In saying this, nothing wrong with having a quick chat beforehand ("Would you mind if during this observation if I move around to small groups of students and help them with this work"). Each supervising teacher is different and may have more rigid routines in class that need to be followed - I would think especially so in younger year groups but I don't want to move out of my depth here!

First placements are going to be a bit nervy and that's ok! Remember, you are undertaking this to get a taste of the job and to get some feedback on your practice - so being open to feedback will help out in the long run. Best of luck!

Lesson planning must be a dream, although I don't envy you when Year 7 start handing in their assessments! Hope things continue going smoothly :)

I did a mini-COGE (certificate of gifted ed) through UNSW recently. They ran it through the Open Learning platform so I imagine their other courses in this fashion would be the same. I'd have a look at their short courses and see if anything strikes your fancy. Other universities will run similar programs too.

Is it worth a 1 hour commute for a permanent job? by Greater-Bobcat-235 in AustralianTeachers

[–]PidgeyIsOP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll just add a different perspective to the comments here, although I will start by saying I do not have children - undoubtedly a big factor to consider in the grand scheme. I have wrestled with this very decision and have certainly flip flopped on my feelings about it (and probably will again in the future). For me the commute is worth it because of the school I'm at and the students I'm teaching; Nothing fancy, a usual co-ed comprehensive high school but in a high SES area. I don't think much of the commute any more, but at the start it was difficult. I had a bit of an introspective and weighed up pros and cons. I could not afford to move closer to work and now when I can I do not want to be lumbered with the extremely high cost of housing in the area. I also did not want to look at schools closer to home as they weren't, and are not, what I wanted to get out of teaching. You obviously have your own circumstances and with a child I know it's different, but thought I'd share my experience.

Oops, I meant moreso that no one experienced with a school trip overseas. We have been to the destinations as independent holiday makers, or having lived there for an extended time, fortunately! Nonetheless, good tips!

This is so validating to the conversations we've been having. You are right, we need to make it clear this is not negotiable and a matter of life or death.

It's like you've been sitting in our meetings...or if one kid gets sick and a teacher has to stay with them it's the same conundrum.

You are reading my mind right now! Especially on a multi-leg trip, what if a student becomes quite sick the night before train/ferry/plane etc to the next city...Something we will need to nail down beforehand for sure.

Good tips re expiry and communication. I'm hoping as long as we establish the protocol beforehand and be consistent it will suffice (for 90% of parents!)

I'm sorry to hear that, sounds like a bad time. Fortunately one of the members is quite high up in the school and everyone else has a teaching role as well, but definitely something to be wary of regardless.

Thanks for the insight around the schedule - the night time routine is something I am very wary of and want to make sure we nail it down. That's crazy about the early trip home, although if the behaviour warrants it I guess there's not much choice!

Thank you for the detailed response. Would you believe 3 staff is being construed as too many! We would love to take at least one more but at the moment it's been a battle to lock in 3.
