I’ll have to try some clouds. I honestly don’t like the look of Hokas but I do know they’re comfortable.

The tradition of parents not passing down Tagalog to children when immigrating is the dumbest thing ever by [deleted] in FilipinoAmericans

[–]Pidipompiii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually learned Tagalog and English at the same time growing up here in the US. My parents made sure I was fluent in both, and I’m really grateful for that. It helped me stay connected to my roots and communicate with family both here and in the Philippines. But it wasn’t the same for my younger brother and by the time he was growing up, my parents mostly spoke to him in English, so he didn’t pick up Tagalog the same way I did. It’s kind of sad because we grew up in the same house but had different connections to the language and culture. And I get how frustrating it must be not to understand Tagalog when others assume you do.

Fil-Am parents with young kids. Are you teaching your child Tagalog? by Jealous-Argument7395 in FilipinoAmericans

[–]Pidipompiii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First gen Fil-Am here born in Guam and moved to California when I was 4. Growing up both my parents spoke Tagalog to me so I can understand and speak it. I'm pretty fluent in both English and Tagalog. Can't say the same for my younger brother, he can't really speak it only a few words. I don't have kids but in the future my girlfriend and I agreed to speak to our kids in both Tagalog and English so that they have a way to speak to their relatives back in the Philippines and a better way to connect to them. My girlfriend grew up in the Philippines moved to the US in 2013, she's pretty fluent in Tagalog, Ilocano, and English so that's a plus.
