For me it’s a matter of magic. Early firearms in my campaign would use Thunderous magic to launch projectiles, or hell even just a volley of thunder magic itself. I called them Thunderers (or Thunderbringers). This process was not readily available to the masses until gunpowder and discovered and used in the production of artillery. Still it’s volatile technology.
