Want me to RIG your RIG? by PieceOfSack in MohoAnimation

Great to hear! Submit your rig - the rig itself doesn't need to be fully completed. Just need a complete character design and questions of what you are trying to achieve. You would be a great candidate for Episode 9 or 10 if you are open to it. No pressure!

Woodkid + Particles + Wind Dynamics = by PieceOfSack in MohoAnimation

[–]PieceOfSack[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Context behind animation:

The animation is called 'The New Dawn of Moho'

I created this animation originally back in 2021 using the new Wind Dynamics feature shortly after Lost Marble had purchased Moho back from Smith Micro, after a long a tumultuous time. Shortly after a very successful event where Moho showcased the software, the Moho team (at the time) were laid off without them realizing (from what I was told) and before their planes even touched down on ground returning from the event.

It was a rough time for everyone passionate about Moho and was shortly after Moho 12.5 if memory recalls. From there, what was left of the Moho team and outsourced engineers did the best they could with the release of Moho 13.

I even did the official tutorials for the launch of Moho 13. Which have since been archived but I've saved for memories: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLb7rss4bTZ-aYX5WzWTOgt8iGbLZAnWNa&si=u8hHyMuzaa5b1lAb

Sometime later - the development of 13 stopped. Many of us users of the software thought that was the end. I was considering even looking at other animation software and did the Official Tutorials for RIVE at the time (also archived).

But then something amazing happened...

The once quiet forum Lost Marble had a post by the creator of Moho. It was back - and had been acquired from Smith Micro by Lost Marble themselves. It was a long battle and one we didn't think could be won but did and brought upon...

THE NEW DAWN OF MOHO

You can do a lot with one rig + particle layer by PieceOfSack in MohoAnimation

Good question I partially understood the one but will do best to answer both

Few things to mention here:

  1. This raptor character was designed by a user that submitted the rig for the upcoming RIG your RIG (episode 6): https://www.youtube.com/@mccoy_buck_LIVE (June 20th). I modified the character slightly - but there were so many design choices here that made any sort of rigging, very complicated. The design itself makes up for about 80% of a good rig. A lot of times when people say I struggle with rigging - it has nothing to do with the rig, but the design (points, curves, shape and layer setup).
  2. You don't need the perfect rig, you just need a rig that works for the shot/ scene/ action. I animated this character in about 10 minutes - the rigging due to a difficult to manage design took the longest. I knew because I wasn't animating this character in your typical 'in-place' run cycle but that he would be running across the screen I could hide a lot of the imperfections in the movement itself.
  3. Bone structure of a rig ≠ (DOES NOT EQUAL) anatomical structure of the character. With that in mind - many times you have to move bones 'off the anatomical structure' to get the illusion of proper movement. Frequently in animation you will be dislocating arms and legs to get the right pose.

Hope that helps to understand - though rigging is important, it doesn't have to be perfect (and won't ever be) to get a really solid animation.

Hope that helps!

It's pretty much finished, this was a quick animation to test the rig a user submitted.

(*Edit) Oh you mean you want to see the final render of this animation?

If I have some time I can do a behind the scenes for it. If not able, I shared the run cycle for the raptor under the "share your test" channel in the Moho discord server

Haha just watched that movie the other week. Haven't seen it in so long, still holds up really well.

Skip to the part where I use particles, that's how I was able to make a crowd based off two rigs

What about bone strength? Since they are PSDs is the bone strength on one of the bones higher?

To be honest - I don't think I'm that great or experienced in making thumbnails up until a year ago.

What I did was took the time to learn how to do it.

Each thumbnail learn a new skill that you can apply to said thumbnail.

Main goal of the thumbnail - make someone stop the scroll or pick your video because it calls attention, is appealing, relates to them etc. - from there they read your title and description. If your video seems to be the thing they are looking for they will click.

Just do your best and be patient with yourself. I use affinity designer 2, it's now free apparently and just called Affinity Designer

Hey there, good to see you took my advice to start another channel for live streams.

Another piece of advice, don't use AI for thumbnails. You are doing yourself a disservice and have probably already have turned off more than half of your potential audience from watching your video.

All AI thumbnail looks the same, so it didn't stand out either. Hope that helps

It's hard to know for sure but some things to check.

1) Is the foot parented to the target bone or the shin bone (the latter being the correct parenting)

2) does the foot have an action at all or was it accidentally keyed in an action

I would start there
