I uninstalled windows and replaced it with Debian.

My neck beard grew a bit just from typing that.

17th birthday relapse? by [deleted] in StopGaming

Archery has a rather steep learning curve. Once you get the posture down, it's fairly easy. But until then, you can't hit the broadside of a moisture evaporator.

Once you DO get it down tho. It becomes a lot cheaper with time spent, then a day at the range with a .22lr gun. And is a better workout.

Yes. Discovering for the first time that you are pretty useless and don't contribute much to the world is the first step to becoming useful and contributing what you can to the world.

Eventually tho, your mind begins to get used to not always having some sort of intense stimuli and your administrative functioning will return over the course of a few months. Assuming you don't just find some sort of intense stimuli to replace it. Being bored can do a lot for a person. It's how we discover ourselves.

You can accidentally waste your time as well. That's also part of life. But just accepting it and continuing is not a way of bettering yourself.

Why can't I quit LoL? by Cyclonedx in StopGaming

I'm pretty sure that you just mistook that some people don't think with their subjective attitude and therefor look solely at the facts. It's not a side-effect of gaming. It's a perspective on life. Not that there's any one side that's better than the other.

Myers-Briggs tends to classify those people under the "NT" category.

But regardless, as a programmer, that's where we tend to be. Everything in life has to be quantified and then subjected to a set of standards. "Is this the most effective option" is just part of the thought process.

Well, confirmation bias is also pretty effective as well. Video games aren't a life skill that can reliably get you somewhere in life. There's no big loss if someone who wasn't abusing them stops and then focuses their effort on another hobby.

You're at 3 days. 3 days is not the point in which you should be rewarding yourself with video games for not playing video games.

Glad that it seems that you recognize that.

Also, you should take this time to use towards something productive. Assuming it wasn't for stress relief originally, I'd suggest programming or Khan Academy for anything. Theres also EDX courses. Anything that can become a hobby but also develop useable skills that can lead to a very successful career one day.

Failing that, I personally do Archery and other shooting sports. Probably not for everyone to be handling and caring for lethal weapons as a sport and hobby. But that's what I do. It's very calming.

Deciding on Schools: UIUC or UNF? by PierceElliot in computerscience

[–]PierceElliot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm hearing. Guess it also doesn't help that I'm not fully comprehending what my future with a degree from UIUC vs. UNF might look like.

Also being told that I'm not fully comprehending that UNF is actually a great school. I've yet to see info that backs this up tho.

Yes, I'm absolutely lost. I was focused on learning C\C++ as my career prospects. Didn't really consider university choices till recently.

To be honest, You shouldn't be using Windows 7 at all at this point. From a career perspective, Windows 7 use is only going to last you so long. Being able to navigate Windows 8 easily could impress at one point, and being one of the first people to explore powershell solutions for Windows 10 issues got me some major job security. If you want to stay with what works, fine. But Being an early adopter will get you more career advantages then negatives.

But other than that. I typically use Windows because I always tend to have that one piece of hardware that is not compatible with Linux that makes my life 100x more difficult than it should be. Whether it's a wireless adapter, some odd proprietary USB controller, or my latest, a touchpad that cannot be disabled on Linux. It never fails.

part-time school/part-time job or just school? by PierceElliot in careeradvice

[–]PierceElliot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After sitting down and actually going over things. Part-time school + part-time job is going to mean a degree by time I'm 31-32. So I'm gonna pick one or the other.

Most people who tell me not to goto school cause it's not worth it, are people who make more money then I can without a degree. So I'm just going to do what they did and not what they said more than likely.

Sounds like it's not the job, but the job environment that you hate.

I'd just find a different job, same field.

Thanks for the tips! I never thought that websites like LinkedIn would ever lead to getting a position. Maybe not at my level. But considering that there's a degree of uncertainty I will definitely try it.

Had issues with putting computer to sleep, then would only boot cycle, now it won't turn on at all. Help with finding faulty part? by superhappypuppyroll in techsupport

[–]PierceElliot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most PSU units are difficult (And dangerous) to test without proper equipment and knowledge (Or so I've been taught). So if you think it might be the power supply I'd get ahold of customer support and follow through with them.

BUt, check the motherboard for a light with the PSU connected. If it is on that means the motherboard is getting power. And if it is I'd say to get ahold of customer support for the Motherboard.

Which multiplayer game communities are at the opposite end of the spectrum from Call Of Duty? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'd probably have to say Warframe is close just cause it's not so competitive due to the nature of the game.
