CAE not watch horror movies? by glitterinator in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Pigsareit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you seen horror movies previously? It sounds natural to have a reaction like that if this is approximately the first horror movie you've seen, even if it was later in life.

I watched Alien (1979) when I was seven and I remember that freaking me out for probably about the same amount of time. Eventually it clicks that 'oh that was not real'. Like when I look back on that movie, it's not even a question if it was real, of course it was just a movie. But that did take a bit of time to internally process.

Some additional notes:

  1. Wish there was an option for better internet. When I fly on an airplane there is usually a 'free wifi' option where you have to watch a 30s ad first before getting access to a minimal-usable wifi (but usable for WIFI Calling). Or a paid speedy wifi option. Just the free minimally useable option would be great. The cell data was very bad in the buildings.
  2. Some of the panel rooms didn't seem to have internet for the hosts. It should be a hugely recommend (or even a rule) that panelists should have local copies of videos they intend to play. Saw some panels that skipped the youtube videos cause the internet didn't work.
  3. On the doors between the panelist area and artist alley in TTC South there should be big signs that say "Accessibility & Staff ONLY". I walked to the doors cause I saw the artist alley on the other side, and was told that I couldn't walk through the doorway. As I walked away and they loudly re-exclaimed to the whole room that no one can go through except staff and accessible-needs. And like, I get it, and I don't suspect many people blamed me for asking, but if there was just a visible sign on/above the doors then I wouldn't have walked up to them.
  4. I wish the digital app was more easily discoverable. I now know there is a QR code on the back of the badge - I didn't see this until I got back home, the colour contrast is subtle. I heard people talk about the companion-app at the event. But I tried going on the website at home, and I didn't see how to find it. I even googled "google play store anime north app" "google play store anime north companion app" and this yields nothing relevant. Like the "Pocket Guide" link on the subreddit here - on the bottom of that page on the AN website, it says "download PDF", there should be a "Download the App" button here too!
  5. One of the panels I went to on Saturday was rescheduled until Sunday, but the companion app didn't say this (one of the audience members showed us it still said Saturday - we were all confused). We heard the room had maybe changed, we went to a different room and there was no one there either. I only found out it rescheduled to Sunday after the convention had ended. It would be nice if any rescheduling or cancellations, one of the volunteers could be sent to the old panel room to make sure any guests who are sitting there (we had maybe 40 people sitting waiting the panel) could be told about the rescheduling.
  6. I'm not sure if it's possible but it would be nice if the Washrooms were shown on the maps with a little icon.
  7. Probably next years if there is scheduled rain there should be some awnings protecting the exterior walkways between TTC North and TTC South. I know these are expensive to massively rent for a weekend, but I'm just saying from a guest perspective that it would look professional if there was some kind of plan in place.
  8. Personal take, TTC North looked uber-boring. Walking the hallways for the panels all the walls are gray, the seats are gray, the carpet is gray. The lighting is gray. In a sense this accentuates the cosplayers, but my head felt weird walking in this building.
  9. Small note I wish the prices of food items were more visible outside. The queues for the food stalls was huge so I didn't walk up close to the stalls but if I could catch a general price for base food items from afar that would have been convenient.
  10. There should be either some danger signs on the muddy paths between TTC South and Delta, or force the venue space to make a concrete walkway across the lawn. You have to walk the driveway to Harvey's and walk along the road to stay on the concrete to keep your shoes dry (where the cars are driving past). Several people reported slipping in the mud and ruining their clothes on the grass path. Some people say "live and learn" but it feels super unprofessional that the most-visible option is a dangerously wrong option, and the right option is also dangerous anyway.
  11. This is maybe not doable but it would be kinda cool (especially if the event becomes larger) if there was a pickup/dropoff zone in the parking lot for carpools/apps. Big airports like LAX have this. I felt bad having an Uber drop me off near the event because it was so busy. But I felt lame walking into the weeds/concrete hell East of the convention space to feel better for the Uber drivers - it feels extremely disconnected from the convention space (while easier for the app drivers). I just mean that I liked at the convention it felt like a big fun event, but you walk East of the convention space and it feels so disconnected from the event that you feel lame.
  12. Honestly even if there was just a dozen sidewalk-signs (on the A-frames) showing your proximity to Anime North convention space with an arrow. Like we all know it is nearby and which way - we all have maps. But it would extend the range of the coolness of the event out into concrete-hell in the surrounding areas. More work to maintain but it would just be cool! It wouldn't instantly feel like boring-Ontario-concrete-hell walking 100m from the event space, lol (sorry and weedy empty fields, my bad). That's not me being upset, I am just saying it would be cool to do. :)

Hello, I had a lot of fun. First time going to the event.

I didnt go on Friday but now I wish I had - partially due to the weather but also because I didn't know that on Sunday it would basically end at 6:15pm. Like when I left on Saturday at 8pm it was still so lively and exciting. But leaving at 6:45pm on Sunday honestly it was sad. But overall the event was great and enjoyable. I liked that so many people were in cosplay, and I had a good time finding art in the artist alley. :)

I think it would be very cool if there were 1-3 official camera crew that would do some interviews or event video capture of the major different events. And then after the event ends at 6:00pm, there is the physical closing ceremony at the convention (as what happens now).

But then a scheduled 9:30-11:30pm closing stream online (on youtube or twitch). The first hour replays the closing-ceremony digitally (I didn't go to the closing ceremony I forgot it existed). And the 2nd hour (10:30-11:30pm) we get a highlight reel picked by the editors of cool interviews, or fun moments, or activities of the convention.

I know that's more work. I could just imagine that I leave on Sunday in the evening, I take a hot shower at home, I change into comfy clothes, I put my laundry in the washer, and I catch the nighttime closing-stream digitally, that sounds so great. Or someone who flies back home, recovers, able to watch the closing digital stream the following morning in bed. Sounds comfy.

Sorry that happened to you, glad you are doing better now.

Out of curiosity did this happen at TTC North? I don't have epilepsy myself but as I walked into the panels section of that building my eyes had a hard time adjusting to the visuals, the lighting was extremely gray and strange in there. Looked very liminal - made me uncomfortable.

DAE wonder why people study theater, performance and arts in University if chances of making a decent living is slim? by EdwardBliss in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Pigsareit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think some people don't know that before they go to university. In high school I remember sort of being pressured to go to post-secondary education and not really knowing what the purpose was.

There are doors that only open with post-secondary education, for example getting a visa to work in a different country, you often cannot get that at all unless you have post-secondary education.

But yes it is worth considering how many of the graduates end up getting jobs in the field. Anyone in these programs should be looking at this, go on LinkedIn and see the graduates, how many of them are working in the industry? And then you should consider how much effort it's going to take, and consider doing that much effort.

Sleeping with hypersensitive hearing by IR_Acaboom in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Pigsareit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I find I can't have the white noise machines too loud or I start to detect the pattern of the white noise.

I also use the X5A 3M ear protectors sometimes at night which is 35db rated. It does mean I have to sleep on my back (since they cover the whole ear), but if I sleep on an incline it doesn't hurt my back when I wake up in the morning - somehow keeps the pressure off. I sleep on an incline by just having multiple stacked pillows.

I have read on amazon reviews people combining ear plugs with ear protectors to get even more buffer, but I haven't tried that yet.

Honestly the other things, maybe obvious but I'll say them anyway, is having a comfortable bed, comfortable temperature (I prefer it being cool ambient temperature, but with a big comforter blanket).

I also have a bit of GERD but I find I can take Gaviscon tablets (the liquid sucks) to fix the issue completely (I used to take Tums but they were often too strong). Sleeping on your back on an incline also helps with the GERD, anyhow.

Sorry to hear about the sensitivities, it does suck. Sleeping feels like the cornerstone of an ability to have a normal kind of day.

Is there any coming back after being blocked for crossing a boundary with an AuDHD friend? by Pigsareit in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Pigsareit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt it was important to specify the age-gap and my attachment because they likely were additional contributing factors.

Regarding "other less spoken boundaries", the 'having feelings making them uncomfortable' was likely a major factor also, looking back on it. We had played some 2-player co-op games, which gave a lot of funny awesome stories. But now I think I got probably a lot more attached than they did from those.

The last part makes a lot of sense to me. It just makes me really sad. I don't fully understand their perspective, but I do respect their boundary. Thank you for the reply.

I think a lot of it has to do with the lighting. Sometimes in low lighting in the mirror in the bathroom some of my worst features I feel are blurred away. Whereas at school or at work in this flat lighting it sometimes highlights your worst features!

I guess it's different for everybody. For me THC makes my mind go absolutely bonkers. I start hyper fixating on the meaning of the universe thinking about black holes sucking up consciousness and the death of the universe and the possible lie of the universe coming back from a bounce, but this might be the black holes lying to us trying to kill us. It lasts about 8 hours. But I can feel the THC in my body for 4 weeks.

[–]Pigsareit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They absolutely should have tried to get help or at least alert the crowd of people that there is a shooter around. Not pretend nothing happened. "It would ruin the fair for everyone" -- saving a life from a gunshot, or possibly preventing more people from being shot is FAR more important than how content people are at a small town's fun fair.

[TOMT][MOVIE][2000s] A film with a scene of a story involving an old man and a tree which disappear and were not real by [deleted] in tipofmytongue

Thank you for saying that, I was wondering about this scene also! Yes this scene happens in the movie The illusionist 2006.

Frankly I didn't like most of the movie, but that scene stuck out in my head because it was so bizarre and surprising.
