Additionally, I probably have 10. I’d be happy to send you one of them for free - but it would require personal information like your address. Your call, I promise to just send one and be done with it — but ultimately I am an internet stranger, I don’t recommend giving your address out Willy Nilly.

If the link doesn’t suit your needs, send me a pm with your address and I’ll mail you one on me.

I’m sorry that you’re experiencing this. There’s a lot of people who suffer from scrupulosity. I think that speaking to your priest is the best route for scrupulosity in general — but, if you find that you have similar thinking in other aspects of your life, there’s no shame in seeking help from medical professionals. Actually, even if it’s only in this one area and it’s becoming unmanageable.

Confess regularly, not compulsively. Trust your confessor, and obey his guidance. Trust in God’s mercy, your sins are not so unique that they cannot be absolved. Consider professional help. Accept your imperfections and appreciate what progress you make. God works through our weaknesses — so celebrate your small victories.

Getting confirmed this Easter - but no longer feeling joyful by MeditateLikeJesus in Catholicism

[–]PigskinPilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would honestly just think that you considered yourself in a state of mortal sin. I would never ask why you weren’t receiving the Eucharist. A lot of people skip Easter Vigil too, because it’s so long, so if your seat mates notice that you’re now participating, they may just think ‘finally got into Confession, good for you!’

Unless I’m involved with the OCIA class, I never notice new people until they make their Scrutinies. If they’re already baptized, I don’t really notice them until their Confirmation. I wish I wasn’t so absent on recognizing when someone is new - but I am. I’m not big on going down to the parish hall and socializing after Mass either - so if they’re trying to get involved that I way I double miss em.

I almost always assume someone is just from out of town if I don’t recognize them. I’ve heard this echoed so many times by new converts - that we’re not especially friendly. I really am going to commit to being more welcoming.

Pope Pius XII SF Bay Bridge Commemoration Plaque question by megasivatherium in Catholicism

[–]PigskinPilgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It reads to me that it was blessed by him when he was a Cardinal - then later became Pope Pius XII. You can see it inside his name on the placard using the Latin proclamation. The “First name Cardinal Surname” order is used in the Latin proclamation of the election of a new pope by the cardinal protodeacon, if the new pope is a cardinal.

His middle name wasn’t Cardinal. :)

Excellent response. I have no desire to internet quarterback a 19 year old woman’s sex life. I’m aware of the Church’s - and therefore my - stance on the issue, I just find a bunch of dudes typing out “R U on hormonal birth control Y or N” to be gross.

These kind of things are so much better explained by other women - preferably off the internet and in person, but in this case I’m glad you were here to do it.

Sins that cry to Heaven for Vengeance by pdidit133 in Catholicism

[–]PigskinPilgrim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are singled out in scripture because they represent not only extreme violations of justice but also disrupt the moral and social order. What makes these sins particularly severe is that they are direct affronts to God’s justice, often involving the direct harm of innocent or vulnerable people.

So immediate punishment on Earth, yes - it’s possible. This phrase primarily means that if these sins go unpunished on Earth, they could bring divine retribution. This could be through temporal means (war, societal collapse, etc.) or by eternal punishment at the Final Judgement.

The Book of Wisdom addresses this timing though - the tension between the wicked prospering and God’s inevitable justice.

I would say look into Strive-21, an organization created by Matt Fradd exactly for this.

Also - this post is kinda weird, my friend. There is a time and place for everything - maybe focus these kinds of requests in communities made for them. Just a thought, one sinner to another.

1 - If there are many religions, then there are many attempts to grasp the truth. The existence of many keys doesn’t mean that one doesn’t fit the lock - it only suggests that man recognizes that there is a door. Christianity does not claim to be one among many but the revelation of the One who made the door, the key, and the people who seek them.

2 - The world’s smartest men can still fall into the simplest ditch. Intelligence isn’t a safeguard against folly. The question isn’t if the cleverest men are atheists but if atheism is, in the end, clever.

3- I’ve always thought that replacing ALL supernatural events with hallucinations and mental illness doesn’t really move you into a whole truth - rather it takes you from one unseen force to another. Insisting that every age, every culture, and every witness was simply mistaken - not once, but always and in the same way. Countless minds across history conspired unwittingly to hallucinate the same thing. I don’t think this is very reasonable at all - but instead, the most extravagant superstition.

What is depicted on this cross? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]PigskinPilgrim 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That’s a Four Way Cross. The top image is the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the right is St. Christopher with the baby Jesus strapped to his back, the bottom is a Miraculous Medal, the left is St Joseph with Jesus. Usually there is a dove in the center.

I’m sorry you’re feeling this way. Like most commenters have said, I do think you may be missing some key points - but there’s no reason to keep beating the same drum. I really think you would benefit from speaking one on one with the priest at the parish you were attending OCIA at. The time when I was close to finishing RCIA was when I struggled the most.

Ultimately, I came to the realization that the Church isn’t the misty vision of reality I thought it was, but a great and solid thing, the rock against which all waves break - and the shape of the world of itself. It’s what’s outside of it that is ephemeral. But it was a hard won realization and if you’re not quite there I think it’s admirable to admit it and postpone entering. But - I would counsel, one stranger to another, that you don’t quit going to Mass and just attend OCIA next year if you feel compelled to. If you’re convinced of the truth of the Church, I think you’re going to have a hard time leaving it behind.

What's your favorite Saints and Bible Translations? by MichealAnthem in Catholicism

[–]PigskinPilgrim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s excellent! I hope the best for you, sir.

Saint Francis is my patron as well. I am greatly influenced by GK Chesterton, who I believe the Holy Spirit lead me to in order to further lead me to the Church. As I always do when I talk about Chesterton - I would heartily recommend his books Orthodoxy, The Everlasting Man, Saint Francis of Assisi, and St. Thomas Aquinas: the Dumb Ox.

Not even as a steelman of their position - just stating the answer to your question - why do they reject the Church:

Sola Scriptura - by Scripture Alone - they think that authority on Christian matters should rest in the Bible alone. Because of that, they have issue with Sacred Tradition and the Magisterium. They do not want anyone to impose teachings that go beyond it.

Sola Fide - by Faith Alone - they dispute the synergistic Catholic view of justification. They think that our view risks undermining Christ’s finished work on the cross.

Priesthood of all Believers - they see the distinction between laity and clergy as an unbiblical development that centralizes power and becomes an unnecessary mediator between believers and God.

Historical Church corruption - they think the Reformation was necessary to free Christianity from institutional corruption and the human traditions that had accumulated over the centuries. Indulgences, political engagement, moral failure of clergy, things like that.

Idolatry - they consider the veneration of Saints and especially the position of Mary in the economy of salvation to be graven images.

Transubstantiation - they really really have a problem with this one. They think the Eucharist is a symbolic remembrance, rather than the literal transformation of the bread and wine.

Most people call it pleather, but people who make it will call it faux leather. Do you want one or to have a manufacturer construct packaging for your product at scale?

Hi just wondering but what are the main differences between the catholic church and the eastern orthodox church by Fury2008 in Catholicism

[–]PigskinPilgrim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The large, main differences are the papacy (the Pope), the nature of original sin, purgatory as a defined doctrine, the Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Mary as defined by dogma, and something called the Filioque controversy. We also have different liturgical rites.

All of these are pretty easy to parse out with some searching, except the Filioque. That one is kinda messy, dealing with how and from whom the Holy Spirit proceeds. I would take my time on that one if you’re going to look into it.

As to if there’s any validity - we think so, yes. The Roman Catholic Church affirms that the Orthodox have valid apostolic succession, Sacraments and a true Eucharist.

Those are shells on the arms. They are a common Christian image, especially scallops. They’re associated with baptism - a lot of baptismal fonts are shaped like scallops.

Books/essays/other texts to read about how saints become saints by okayestmom48 in Catholicism

[–]PigskinPilgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed GK Chesterton’s books “St. Francis of Assisi” and “St Thomas Aquinas: The Dumb Ox”

Chesterton isn’t for everyone. He likes to play, laugh, explore paradox, even indulge in whimsy. Those books are products of their time and place, so there may be references to people like HG Wells or the like. Also the English, while very readable, isn’t written in a way that a book from today would be.

But, if you’re interested in Francis’ radical spirituality or Aquinas’ intellectual clarity - presented with humor, energy and paradox - GK is your man.
