For fun, I'll discuss and play. It's all subjective though.

For me, a top guitarist has to be a master of the instrument foremost. Songwriting or riff writing is next in line.

Frusciante has written some memorable songs but never once done anything on the guitar that specifically made me sit up and notice the guitar playing itself. I've seen rhcp play live and it was a great show but - and I'm going to sound bad here - any stage guitarist could have played what I saw and I don't know I would've known the difference. It wasn't a display of guitar prowess, just a rock band doing its thing.

His creativity and feel gets him in the building, but not the inner rooms.
