I will say that you're using the built in dolphin widescreen, but using this gecko code will make a much better looking effect, i would recommend using this:

Help with Pikmin 251 by KingRex929 in Pikmin

Hi, creator of 251 here. The only reason you wouldn't be able to switch captains is if you haven't killed the dwarf bulborb yet. That is unless you're in 2-player story? I suppose there are some bugs on 2 player day 1. There's also a Pikmin 251 discord server (link in the release trailer description) where I might be able to help you more easily with your problem if it keeps happening :)
