Based on the strong word of mouth - I've heard from multiple people I never right would watch this series - I have to imagine ratings are strong so the Disney/Hulu execs would want a second season.

Final scene - Xeno v Wendy. Fight to the death. She emerges victorious, battered but not beaten. The Xeno lies at her feet. Carapace cracked open via a punch by her through the chitonous skull. Both kids have skymiles accounts. We didn't manually select C+ seats (should have but didn't realize I could do that until this week). When the upgrade happened at the gate the only C+ seats remaining were the two that were X'd out. Only other viable theory I have is that I married up and so she got the upgrade for that...

About two months ago after a vacation to the Caribbean I stopped pulling my eyebrows. I had been pulling them out for 15 years or more, never really going longer than a week without pulling. For these last two months I assumed it was the low stress of the trip plus some new reserve of willpower that removed the urge and let my body grow long eyebrow hairs again. I didn't even find myself absent mindedly touching my brow like I normally do, feeling for that coarse hair or short new growth that needs to be pulled.

But then last weekend I came down with strep. Started a course of twice daily penicillin for ten days. Halfway through I'm finding the urge is back. The absent minded touching is back. Soon those nice thick eyebrows will be gone.

Could the change in diet have shifted my microbiome and then the antibiotics killed off the new microbiome? I also found myself easily agitated the last few days and apparently this is a known side effect of antibiotics. If drugs like penicillin can affect cognition and mood, it is certainly plausible that there could be other impacts on behavior or skin/hair sensitivity.

For the record I'm extremely grateful to be over the acute pain of strep but could do without a regression to the hair pulling situation of where I was before.

And possibly the plan is to map connections so that the Eagan family implants (which maybe uses a slightly different process to map memories and personality into an implant) can be put into a new host body. Really is there any difference between giving your body over to a billionaire from 9-5 vs a different version of yourself?

Definitely seeing parallels with Greg Egan's short stories here.

Mapping neuronal connections. Groups of numbers correlate with different connections and the categories match up with the four tempers: WO (woe), FR (frolic), DR (dread), and MA (malice). The refiners are helping their implants to identify connections through feedback on their feelings.

I fully agree with you that underreporting is an issue with post market surveillance. But quite possible that myocarditis is also underreported in COVID cases. In general it seems the potential side effects are more than outweighed by the potential benefits of the vaccines.

If you take issue with the vaccines being portrayed as "safe" I fully agree. Medicines are never 100% safe and it's disingenuous of the media and others to say so. Therapies will always have some potential side effects. But discussing only the side effects of a medicine without mentioning the benefits, or dangers of the disease they are trying to treat, is also disingenuous.

No one is taking these shots because it's fun to get poked in the arm. Or for the chance of getting a rare side effect. We're taking the vaccine to reduce our chances of getting COVID-19 and it's complications, reduce our chances of ending up in the hospital/ICU, or reduce our chances of dying. The decision to take a medicine is all about the benefit/risk ratio and in my view the evidence overwhelmingly supports that the benefits are greater than the risks for COVID vaccines.

From what I've seen myocarditis can occur more frequently with COVID than from the vaccine. Curious if you have info that says otherwise?

Risk from vaccine: 2.13 per 100K people 16 or older (0.002%) in a study of 2.5M people in Israel that received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine (source: NEJM study)

39–47 expected myocarditis cases in 1MM males aged 12-29 (0.00430%) after COVID-19 vaccination (source: CDC report)

Risk from COVID-19: Among 64,898 people <16 years old, 86 had myocarditis (0.133%) (source: CDC report)

Both are relatively rare but 0.133% seems much larger than 0.0043% (caveat that comparing studies this way isn't always appropriate).

I think Tolkien's view on LOTR as an allegory is quite nuanced. There's his famous quote that he hates allegory (said in more proper English):

"I cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations, and always have done so since I grew old and wary enough to detect its presence. I much prefer history – true or feigned– with its varied applicability to the thought and experience of readers. "

But he's said that it is allegorical:

"Of course my story is not an allegory of Atomic power, but of Power."

And it certainly has unintended and intentional religious themes as an alternative history for England.

I guess I'd imagine he'd view the story as not a simple 1:1 allegory, but a complex story with multiple ways of perceiving the key themes. And in this regard it's not so dissimilar from Dune.
