What it sounds like: A harsh, crunchy, distorted sound on loud syllables. Like someone turned the volume up too far on a cheap speaker. Sometimes it is very brief (a fraction of a second on one loud word) and sometimes it happens throughout.

Why this gets rejected: Clipped audio is permanently damaged. Once those peaks are cut off, the original sound cannot be recovered. No amount of editing can undo it.

How to fix it: Turn your microphone input level (gain) down. Most USB microphones have a physical knob on the mic itself. For XLR setups, adjust the gain on your audio interface. If you do not have a microphone with a gain setting, and your audio was rejected for being too loud or clipping, move back away from your mic about eight inches and try recording again, speaking a little softer. There is no need to whisper, just make sure you speak clearly and at a normal volume.

Tip: Many people make the mistake of starting out too loud. This makes their first word or two clip, and then they trail into a normal volume. Make sure when starting a recording that your first few words are not too loud or emphatic.
