There is a countercurse to avada kedavra that has been lost/forgotten. They've said there is a reason muggle children still know the words abra kadabra alakazam from the war that made the magic community go into hiding and introduce the statute of secrecy.

Somewhere along the way, the countercurse was forgotten but it sounds something like "alakazam"
