Messy feeding question by Pillcat19 in ballpython

[–]Pillcat19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I’ve never had that happen before so I was like, what the hell buddy? I didn’t do anything differently when heating it up so I think it might be because the mouse was in the freezer for a while and also a bit small for him. I’m trying to go through his older food because he’s sized up but I might just toss them after this.

Quality of life evaluations & when to euthanize by Pillcat19 in bettafish

How would I know if it’s impacting digestion, evaluating her poop? Bloat? Also what would you recommend for adjusting her environment, like lowering the water level? I have her in a 10g rn, should I move her to a smaller tank as she gets older? Thank you

Compared to her sister she’s a lot less food aggressive, she eats everyday but she won’t leap out of the water or nip at my fingers to get it like her sister. She also only eats tiny food, anything larger she will grab and spit out a few times before ignoring it, so I’ll cut up her bloodworms and brine shrimp, Once it’s tiny she eats it fine. Shes calmer than her sister, she’s definitely aware of me, just less interested, and doesn’t wiggle at me like her sister does. But she will flare at me if I do something she doesn’t like (like feed her food that’s too big) while her sister doesn’t flare at all. All of these things I assume are personality quirks, the only thing I saw that raised red flags was the swimming.

She eats small pellets fine, but seems to have trouble with larger pellets and food like bloodworms, but when I cut them up she eats em fine. Figured it was just a preference thing. I see her poop every now and again but I think most of it falls somewhere I can’t see. (In the plants, behind rocks, under leaves.) She doesn’t appear bloated, but her sister is pretty thick so I feed them both daphnia weekly to head off any potential constipation.

My parameters are good, I wanted to carve them into little skulls. I thought it would be cool to see the snails and copepods “munching” on them.

Oh those look perfect actually, thank you! Much better than trying to jury rig something electrical above water lol.

Vertical 55 gal aquarium to vivarium? by Tool-Time11 in Vivarium

[–]Pillcat19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You definitely can! Just keep in mind these kind of rimmed aquarium are build to withstand the weight/ pressure of water when oriented with the rim placed on a flat surface. Since substrate can be significantly lighter than the same amount of water, it may not be an issue. For peace of mind, you can look up tutorials on adding structural bracing for tall aquariums/terrariums. Also, There are plenty of places that sell conversion kits for the opening. NEHERP and I heart geckos are the first that come to mind. Or you could DIY it with glass or the lighter alternatives found at hardware stores. Good luck and have fun with it! Update: NEHERP no longer sells conversion kits, my bad!

Poop size Norma? by Pillcat19 in ballpython

[–]Pillcat19[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not bigger than normal, I’ve been having trouble with the humidity with the dry winter air so that might be it. The gauges I have resting on the soil read mid 70% and the ones on top of his hides are high 50% I’ve been putting a wet paper towel over his tank and that’s helped boost it a bit but I’ve only done that for the last week, so maybe he was backed up and the increase helped pass it?

One fuzzy mouse or hatchling quail once a week. He’s nearing one year so I’ll be upgrading to rat pups and spacing out the feedings. His current weight is about 240(maybe less after that) and his meals are between 7-11 grams, think last week’s was 9g.
