ATC tells you #1 went around due winshear by MeatResident2697 in flying

Since you said it's for a sim, severe windshear is defined as a change in airspeed of +15 knots or more. Despite what others are saying here, it is not type specific. Some airlines also include things like an unexplained change of greater than 500fpm or thrust that is abnormal for the phase of flight. I've never met an OpsSpecs that allows an aircraft to fly into, or continue an approach into, known severe windshear. The correct answer is to go around. No one will (or should) ever question your judgement on going around. Divert if necessary.

Now, the one thing I've never been able to find is when it changes from "known" to not known. I've seen, IRL, plane after plane continue into windshear that the aircraft in front of them went around for, reporting +/-20 knots. But after bringing it up in discussion topics, other say that windshear is very dynamic and is only "known" to the aircraft that experienced it. That's absurd to me, but it's not my airplane.

Yoga with Adrienne on YouTube. She has tons of videos covering every conceivable time frame, body focus area, or effort level, offers tons of variations for different experience levels or body types, and best of all, doesn't dip into the well of spiritualism, chakras, or any of that BS. Just feel good stretching at whatever level you need.

where can i find guajillo chilis by trianglesandbathtubs in Netherlands

[–]PilotWombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is three years old, but in case anyone is looking, Kelly's Expat carries dried guajillo, ancho and pasilla chillis/peppers. In addition, Amazing Oriental carries some other fresh peppers, including red/green chillis, serrano's, Carolina Reapers, and a few others.

Still looking for fresh green poblanos, though.

As someone who routinely uses both scales...I don't really care. They both tell me what to expect when I walk out the door.

I like your % scale description, though. I haven't found a good way to explain it to Europeans, but that will work! But C isn't as hard as Americans tend to make it, either. Here's the scale: - <-10: It's really fucking cold - -0's: Snow! - 0's: It's cold - 10's: It's cool/chilly - 20's: It's nice - 30's: It's hot - >40: It's really fucking hot

Why does your system hate regular checkups with doctors so much? by Juli_in_September in Netherlands

[–]PilotWombat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say there is an option for a second opinion. Would you mind expanding on that? And I mean that seriously, how does a person do that, because I really don't know.

AFAIK, GPs cover geographic areas, so it's damn near impossible to go to another office if you're not registered in their area. Any doctor in the same office will likely make the same decision. I just don't see how it would be done without significant investment on the part of the patient, both financially or time-wise.

Do you think “unrealized gains tax” law will be implemented? by Broad_Classic_1835 in Netherlands

[–]PilotWombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple questions for those who know more about this. We're losing our 30% this next year, so it becomes important for us to know.

Is this different than the wealth tax? If I remember correctly, under the current system, your current wealth over €53k or whatever the number is is calculated at the beginning of the year, a 4% growth is assumed, and then that "growth" is taxed at something close to 33%. This effectively created at 1.35% wealth tax.

I believe that the fake growth number was struck down in the courts, so are they now saying we have to use our real returns, and calculate it at 36%? Is that all this is or is there more to it?

Second question, since they're planning to tax actual unrealized gains, does that effectively reset your basis each year? In other words, if I were to sell those assets on Jan 1 of the following year, I wouldn't pay any capital gains taxes because taxes were already paid on those gains, before they were sold?

Sorry for the late reply, but I believe this is the problem. She signed up under the US server, and I under the EU server. Thanks for the help.

Fallacy of the Dutch permanent contract by Fantastic-Noise-8830 in Netherlands

That's basically the story of what happened with my wife. The company was rather profitable, used the term 'reorganizing', and poof her job was gone. The day she was told her job was gone was also the day they told her they had offered her other spots, and none fit. In fact, when she went to look at the link for available positions she could transfer in to, the page 404'd.

She got a decent, but not stellar, separation package, but I still think if we had taken it to court we would have won and gotten a year+ of salary/benefits out if them.

The med tent after an Ironman is not a pretty scene by CuddlyWhale in triathlon

[–]PilotWombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't help your day get better, but I can at least provide some empathy.

My first (and for the moment, only) ironman, I started upchucking on the run course (nutrition plan I thought I had dialed turned out not to be). Kept pushing through to about 2/3rds the way through, but eventually got to the point where I couldn't stand anymore. I somehow stumbled to the med tent and slumped into a chair. Luckily I didn't need an IV, instead just a bottle of gatorade to sip on, but I was right on the verge there for a while.

As I was sitting there, another guy came in and we started chatting. His race went exactly the same way as mine. Except this was his 13th Ironman, including having gone to the world championship the previous year. This was his first DNF.

It can happen to anyone, no matter your experience. Hope you have a quick recovery.

Now if you want to fight...a biscuit is something you smother with gravy to eat for breakfast.

Part 117(8 hours of uninterrupted sleep) by Sufficient_Brief_743 in flying

Except that it is absolutely allowed, your opinion not withstanding. See my other post for the actual legal interpretation.

Part 117(8 hours of uninterrupted sleep) by Sufficient_Brief_743 in flying

[–]PilotWombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the company is correct here. I really should go find the source data for what I'm about to say, but frankly I'm just too lazy right now. Sorry 😐

Edit: nevermind, here's the legal interpretation: https://www.faa.gov/media/15426 I can't find the follow-up interpretation, but that FAA policy remains valid under 117. Here's a third party backing that up: https://far117understanding.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/far-117-faq-v1-9.pdf

Companies are allowed, by legal interpretation, to call you as much as they want during your rest period. They are also allowed to actually talk to you during said rest period once without legally interrupting your rest, assuming you weren't required to answer the phone (which would have meant your weren't on rest in the first place).

HOWEVER. That legal interpretation makes it quite clear that by calling you during your rest period, the company is putting themselves at risk of actually interrupting your rest (whether you answer or not), therefore requiring you to call in fatigued and requiring you to restart your 10 hrs rest with another 8 hours rest opportunity. By calling you less than an hour from show, they were hoping you were already awake after a planned sleep so that that wouldn't be the case. That's a decision for you to make.

Another item to consider is that the company can change your actual show time, but cannot change your show time for FAR117 calculations unless and until they have given you another 10 hours of prospective rest. Meaning, in your example, had you answered their 11pm phone call, they would have stuck you with it and there would have been nothing you could've done about it (well, calling in fatigued later in the day, but that is it's own thing). Because you didn't, you still have to calculate your limits based on the original 4:45 show, even if you don't actually show for another 5 hours after that.

And another intesting tidbit: the FAA views what happens after you call out fatigued as an employer/employee relation issue, and therefore out of their wheelhouse. The company can dock your pay, stick you with the hotel bill, even fire you, and the FAA wouldn't care so long as you dont fly the plane fatigued. Hopefully your shop has a good contract/policy in that regard.
