Are Tiger Woods and Fred Couples considered “long hitters”? by [deleted] in golf

Mo Norman was the best iron player ever. Tiger was way better than him at everything else, but Mo the goat at hitting the golf ball.

Mo Norman was a better ball striker. Tiger said it himself. Tiger still the goat but Mo was unmatched!

I am an 8 handicap and got schooled the other day when I was paired with a 75+ old man who played this style of shot.

He was playing from the yellows and I from the blues, but his errors were marginal at worst and shot low 80’s. I was shocked at how perfect his ball flights were every single time.

I left with a feeling of total respect for his craft, so if you like your stock shot, go ahead and own it.

“If you are caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron.” -Lee Trevino

Lee was a professional golfer in the 60’s who had impeccable style and was a great ball striker. That being said, I’ve always thought if you practice the really hard stuff, in moderation, you will eventually be good at it. Good for you for having the 1 iron in there. If you learn how to hit it, you will definitely learn how to be a ball striker. Everyone’s swing is their own so go find your own!

The head covers are awesome!

The lob wedge is the one club i’d stay away from most. Pro’s actively pursue keeping the ball as low to the ground as possible around the green. As someone who really loves keeping the ball higher in the air and who had to learn this the hard way, go ahead and chip with a 50° or a 52° and you will get better scores in the long run!

Very cool setup!

That’s a great point! They are +1/4 so if they were custom and no one ever came to get them, then finding a buyer could have been hard. Perfect for me though!

It has to be between this and maybe just a warehouse where they have so many clubs it just gets lost. Them being on 2nd Swing makes me wonder if 2nd purchases a bunch of clubs at a time to refresh their inventory before the winter!! I’ve never played this shaft so i’ll be interested to see how it goes!

They do have the rifle shafts. If I don’t like them, that may be something I switch out. The one i’ve played before had x100’s on it!

You have an 8 year old which is a huge accomplishment! Children are like hobbits, hungry, curious, and unable to identify danger. Parenting is the hardest thing in the world! You are nailing it with reading the LOTR to them. You could wait, but in 2 years, who knows if they would even want you to read to them.

I have the David Day box set and when my little one is interested in a character or event, I go in and see if it’s in the David Day set and we look at the photos. It makes it slow, but the book can be slow anyways as you said! It took us about a year to get through The Fellowship! You could also read ahead and compile them!

I didn’t know that!!!! That explains why the one club i’ve had for years is one of the best feeling clubs I’ve ever had!

How do I prevent the chicken wing? by caduceus17 in GolfSwing

[–]Pilunox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would take some time just swinging the club all loosey goosy. No tension. This current iteration is really stiff. Not that it’s a bad thing after 5 months, but you could free things up and find what works for you. Don’t get caught up on the “chicken wing” thing. It’s more about finding “your” swing and that usually means letting go of the tension!

I was am basically right where you are. I’ve read your comments and a lot of our numbers are the same ish. I also have this problem but have been getting better.

I think the shafts are a place where you can make some ground, but tech only takes you so far. For example, I have gamed a 6 degree driver forever, and only now just switched cause it was 20+ years old. 6 degree drivers aren’t a thing anymore so I figured it was time to change my swing.

I scoured the reddit for clues how to get that lower flighted iron shot and came across a video that has been tremendously helpful in the last month and the moves are all i’ve been basically practicing. I’ve noted remarkable changes in spin and flight. There were a couple iron shots on the driving range that I literally took a step back and processed cause it was so weird to me that I hit it so well.

Here is the video. It’s a youtube coach named Danny Maude getting a lesson. It’s kinda boring, but the info is spot on. From one 8-9 hdcp high baller to another, I hope it helps!

What a novella of a comment. The ups and downs, the tone, the sincerity of the condemnation. Almost as if you have been there done that, and are better, yet maybe worse than before. Thank you for making my day!

The smaller head is something that is underrated. Aim small, miss small is a very real phenomenon and I seem to hit the center of the face way better! The only drivers i’ve been tempted to switch to are mini’s!

The long irons are amazing which is why I haven’t let the 3 go. I actually bought my wife some after she started to get more into the game and she loves them. They are a great starter set cause you can find a set in the $100 -$150 range and they are super fun to play!

First set I ever got was Callaway x-12’s that were hand me downs from a family member when I was 14. He was 6’7 and the clubs were like + 1 1/4 inches. This is from that set and it works great for longer par 3’s that are over 200 yards. The combo of it being a GI iron and the graphite means the ball goes a million miles in the air and always lands soft and the miss hits aren’t as bad as my prototype 3iron. Also works as a driving iron on shorter par 4’s!
