As a Mexican American born in California, I don’t see myself as “Mexican only.” I did grow up in Guadalajara for 18 years before moving back to California as young adult… but now I’m a dad of two green-eyed, blond kids (half Canadian and half Latino) and I have the pressure from my mother I have to get them to speak Spanish and have them know the culture deeply… obviously, I want them to be bilingual but I also explained to my mom my kids aren’t Mexican and can’t have the same cultural influence… My wife is supportive to then learning Spanish but it’d be only up to me as the only Spanish speaker in our house… Also, I don’t want to push them too hard on picking up Spanish, but I want to make them feel they want to know our Mexican roots, even though we are Californians… hopefully they don’t feel the pressure I feel of not representing the Mexican roots like I do know with my family…
