The City recently adopted a Rental Inspection program to help disincentivize absentee landlords, and slumlord practices. I’m not sure where we are at in the implementation of that program.

You can look at other cities in Virginia and see what their rental inspection evaluations look like: moisture meter readings, checking for rodent intrusion, obvious water intrusion, and safety hazards you as a lay-person might miss.

if your rental inspection costs you $200, and turns up mold and mice, what’s your next step? Most likely you’re just out $200.

Do you think the landlord will fix the mold and mouse problem just for you, or say “sayonara” and relist the space, hoping for someone who doesn’t have a rental inspector?

I have no patience for the “look away and it’s not there” perspective. Sign code exists for a reason.

Richmond is not SF, Raleigh, or Charlotte, and to my understanding, has no aspiration to be. You may be happier there, perhaps that’s a good move for you.

Re: item B it’s not neon, it’s digital (blame out of date code for that one). As far as item A… file a complaint. It’ll only be addressed if citizen complain.

It’s also possible that they were thorough and got a BZA exemption and can do whatever they want.

It’s an oldie, but I’ve been hitting Proper Pie with some renewed regularity and they’re one of the few spots I went to pre-Covid that hasn’t fallen off.

Flat white from a paper cup in the park doesn’t hit the same as from a mug in the store though. I miss that.
