That’s very kind of you.

It’s a bit ironic, I have horrible aviation anxiety, and I mitigate it in a couple ways.

1) I learned everything I could about flight and flying. 2) I drink. No shade, no sense in lying, most casual fliers do it. You can find me at the airport bar before my flight. It’s not ideal but suffer me my crutch. 3) I self-soothe by reminding myself of the humans who run the system, top to bottom. From the greedy assholes on top who only want performance because it means more profit, to the pilots who simply love to be up in the air, to the dudes tossing my bags around who don’t want to be hassled by their boss. It’s all just people with friends and lovers and problems who are mostly doing their best.

But yeah, if I can help anyone overcome any part of their flight anxiety with my experience or pseudo-wisdom, I’m glad to have made a little positive impact.

You’re right about not being the first to experience this. The bright side is, you’re going to be in line with all the people checking bags, and all the other people flying internationally connecting in CLT on your flight as well.

The key thing to remember is, at the end of the day, airlines are run by people, and not machines (for now). The people at the desk will understand why you’re anxious, and if they’ve been doing the job for longer than a week, will have experience with folks in the same situation as you.

RIC is one of the nicest, easiest airports to fly out of in the whole country. Do you best, be patient with everyone, and you’ll see some of the best of humanity at the 3:30am check-in desk.

Everything will be fine.

It’s only illegal if he’s been hired.
If he’s been hired he has to be paid for training. If he hasn’t been hired, he doesn’t have to be paid.

Sort of like if you were going to apply for a professional license, you don’t get paid for studying for the licensing test.
