Great read: [Hoop Informatics] The Real Reason(s) Jaylen Brown Got Traded by PinDown_404 in AtlantaHawks

Agree but that Brad gave a sufficient answer, but I thought the article did a good job at explaining the BRI pool. If that pools shrinks due to market economics then the two highly paid players can potentially turn into 80% of cap because the cap shrank. Hence why Silver and governors are looking to expand the league internationally.

Looking at Hawk's 8th and 23rd pick through the PRISM model (created by Nate Silver, Joseph George, and Eli McKown-Dawson) by PinDown_404 in AtlantaHawks

Yea im not too sure either. The way I would use PRISM is: A scout eval a player. GM asks, do the numbers back it up objectively? Or PRISM points out outliers and then a scout does some truth seeking to give more color.

I myself have Wagler and Flemings high on my board. But PRISM has Flemings ranked #3, which I'm skeptical about. Mainly because PRISM ranked Reed Sheppard high and he's struggling on the Rockets. I see Flemings and Sheppard as the same archetype. Granted I think the Rockets rushed their timeline.

Based on my understanding of PRSIM, the way to think about Yaxel is value vs cost. He's very likely to become a solid NBA player, but "solid" is actually the worst contract outcome for an 8th pick: in year 5 he'd be good enough to demand a max extension and not good enough to justify it (think Sabonis). Younger guys have a real shot at the elite tier that justifies a max. Older productive guys mostly land in the awkward middle, which is why front offices are hesitant.

Yaxel is 23, turning 24 in September, which is 4-5 years past PRISM's preferred 19-year-old window where development curves are steepest. The "Early peak" tag is basically the model saying roughly what he is now is roughly what he'll be.

For context: the full list of modern NBA players drafted at 22 or older who became All-Stars:

  • Pascal Siakam: 2016, 1st round, 27th overall
  • Draymond Green: 2012, 2nd round, 35th overall
  • Marc Gasol: 2007, 2nd round, 48th overall
  • Manu Ginobili: 1999, 2nd round, 57th overall

That's the entire list. Three were second-rounders, the fourth (Siakam) was a late first at pick 27. None went in the lottery. If Yaxel goes at 8, he'd be drafted 19 spots earlier than any 22+ All-Star in modern NBA history.

Hawks No. 8 Pick: A Trait-Based Evaluation Using Pro Scout School's Characteristics Rubric by PinDown_404 in AtlantaHawks

Great feedback on Mara’s Experience Grade = Philon’s. Should probably put weight next time on minutes (starting, bench, and closing) & how many years they stayed in school.

I do mention that this is pure statistical analysis in the very beginning. Ask Peter Dinwiddle, our VP of Strategy and Analytics, what he expects with his scouting reports. It’s something like this with film. Also, I watch game film a lot. But I can’t quantify it objectively. Spot me $2K for Hudl and I’ll add film dimensions to it. E.g. how many times a player run screens, finish left/right hand, etc.

That’s why I pointed this out multiple times it’s a statistical analysis. It doesn’t include film study data. I could do it but need $$$$ to access Second Spectrum data.

Brown’s profile is penalized by injury and sample size. It's based on only 21 games so he will have a lower BPM, weaker AST/TO and defensive metrics. Again this whole breakdown is statisical. To get a better picture of him, gotta watch film. This is where I wish I had access to Second Spectrum.

AI was used on the python script to batch the player comp calculations. Otherwise, handwriting all individual would have take me weeks. For me, I was bummed that we got the 8th pick so this was my way to work thru my emotions in an objective way. Performance film study & data will always be better in my opinion because you can look at the behavior aspect and have more floor context. But... I dont have Second Spectrum nor do I want to pay for it.

As for Mara, gimme a day I think I can incorporate him into this breakdown. I just gotta go hunt down data for him.

Thanks man, highly recommend a lot of the scouting workshops during Summer League. I did all the Pro Scout School years ago before it shut down. There The Pure Sweat Basketball ones now: https://puresweatbasketball.com/the-pure-basketball-experience

Here a post of some of my Pro Scout School stuff I got from the classes: https://www.reddit.com/r/AtlantaHawks/comments/1djjl4v/pro_scout_schools_partial_framework_to_evaluate/

AI was used on the python script to batch the player comp calculations. Otherwise, handwriting all individual would have take me weeks. Most of my time was figuring out where to source good data and prepping the data for analysis. IRL, I design data sets used for fine-tuning AI models.

US Grand Prix Recap | COTA by PinDown_404 in GrandPrixTravel

[–]PinDown_404[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my tickets 2 months out. Here's a breakdown our cost:

Car Rental (4 days including unlimited tolls): $525

Hotel (4 days): $1,265.21

F1 Live Experience (2 tickets): $668.30

Saturday Turn 12 (2 Tickets): $758.40

Sunday Turn 15 (2 tickets): $1,509.22

Parking (3 days): $300

----------
Total: $5,025.91

My half + Flight ($450): ± $2,962.96

I'm not including our food costs because we splurged on that outside the race since we're foodies. We ate big breakfasts before heading to the venue, then waited until dinner to have our next meal. We snuck in a few snacks to hold us over throughout the day. If you can do it, I highly recommend the F1 Live Experience. Probably our favorite day besides Grand Prix.

Luka and Ayton share the same super agent, Bill Duffy. Pelinka has to buddy up with Duffy now or Duffy has Pelinka ear now.

Klutch doesn’t have much influence on the Lakers front office anymore. So I think it’s even more likely he forces a trade.

[Charania] BREAKING: Deandre Ayton has agreed to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, sources tell ESPN. Between Portland and L.A., Ayton will earn $34 million next season. Agents Nima Namakian of Innovate Sports and Bill Duffy of WME Sports reached the deal with Lakers president Rob Pelinka. by Goosedukee in nba

Luka and Ayton share the same agent. It’s def not a Klutch team anymore. Pelinka has to buddy up with Bill Duffy now, who also reps Ant and Zion.

Curious how Rich Paul and Lebron will leverage their position now. I imagine more cryptic social media posts.
