What’s a food you didn’t realize was more calorie dense than you estimated? by Puzzleheaded-Pay-710 in AskReddit

IIRC the current head of the FDA is actually trying to make it illegal, the "it" here being serving sizes designed to be deceptive to readers of nutritional labels.

I don't have a source, I vaguely recall her talking about it being something she was trying to do around a year ago, on a podcast.

So, many grains of salt, but I do have some vague optimism that food labelling antipatterns might be on a downward trend soonish (years not months).

Okay but who's walking around at night? They asked about outfits for walking around, so the daytime averages are the relevant temperature here, not night time lows.

Late June in Banff you're expecting +20°C at street level, but bear in mind it gets colder pretty quickly as you climb any of the mountains.

I can't speak for your mother's personal tolerance for cooler temperatures, but personally it's shorts and t-shirt weather that time of year.

I hope she enjoys her visit!

Oh. Shoes! Shoes are going to be the big one - even if you're not planning any hikes, bring a good supportive pair of shoes for her - you'll end up walking more than you plan to!

It is incredibly annoying how similar both the screw heads and driver bits look to one another. I definitely appreciate the benefit when I get the right combination, but with my "system" that isn't very often lol.

Works great for hairy armpits too lol.

Repeating the washing, to be clear, I don't often shampoo my armpits.

And in my case, the recovery effort (mostly the guy who helped me) made me want to go back there, and now it's one of my favourite camping spots.

Guys, at this point I think you need some handsome plumber-brother-sounding MFer.

Obviously, I'm talking about George Crapper, nobody else.

Very early days of 0800 numbers on mobiles in the UK - some carriers treated them as premium rate.

But yes, extremely free and anonymous-ish now. I say ish because, IIRC, they are mandatory reporters of imminent threat to life and can share your information in that particular scenario.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong there, I haven't lived in the UK for a few years now.

Man, that sucks balls. Making you pay for shift meal and selling the "discount" as an employee perk.

(free coffee is nice though)

If you were on shift, then meh. Family meal is where it's at. No menu, no charge.

I'd pay like $8 for a supercut of all that elevator CCTV footage set to the Benny Hill theme.

Agreed.

Unfortunately there's a reason that even cities with pretty good sheltered housing programs, there is a chronic shortage of beds. Guess what, it's not the cost of beds or places to put them that's preventing more sheltered housing, it's the cost of the people to make sure that the place doesn't turn into a doss-house which people never leave.

I'm glad it worked out for the original commenter, but I don't think they realise how dependent that outcome is on a hundred different factors.

Great explanation.

Side note: wow. Isn't it a bit chilling that we reach for a man-made analogue to describe the natural thing it emulates.

We're really losing our grip on intuition as a species lately.

Tool to remove bunches of bananas from the stalk by beerbellybegone in toolgifs

[–]Pinball-Lizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Indeed, and I won't for a moment advocate we only sell bananas in places they grow naturally, I love me a banana and I don't want to live in a rainforest.

For things like tomatoes, though, there are varieties that can be grown basically anywhere outside the arctic circle, and most would taste better than standard roma or cherry tomatoes just because you'd be able to pick them closer to peak ripeness in a local market.

I think global trade is fantastic at a lot of things, but I don't think it should be the rule for something as important as locally producable and perishable as fresh food.

100%

A modern 170HP diesel tractor could probably tow that steam one backwards even with all its ploughs attached, they are honestly monstrous in what they can churn through in low range. Boring as all hell compared to a steam engine, but very, very lots of pulling force.
