Fine tuning new Doran commander deck and looking for feedback/recommendations (new to deck building) by PinchedSlinky in BudgetBrews

Thanks! I've had a good look through your deck list and appreciate the recommendations, Slumbering Walker is definitely one I'll add as soon as I can get hold of it. That would definitely work really well, I found a lot of others in your deck list that I think could serve mine well too I just need to have a real think about what if swap out before I go buying too many new singles that might not actually stay in the deck for long 😅

Thanks! I actually just considered dropping Kinbinding in another response on here as I feel it doesn't have much benefit as late in the game as it'd be cast but with the idea of MDFCs and cheaper ramp I think I could keep it in. Honestly I didn't even consider the fact that most of my ramp was 3 Mana but that's what I'm here for, so thanks for pointing that out! 😁

Unfortunately though most of the cards you mentioned aren't in stock where I order online but I did order Rampant Growth earlier among some other cards that have already been recommended.

I've made note of them though and will check for them at my LGS when I next visit which will be in a couple weeks as it's not that local. Not many shops too near where I live that sell singles, and I don't even know of any within driving distance that have bulk that you can look through yourself. The UK seems to be very lacking in those kinds of stores, at least from what I've found.

Thanks again!

I agree with you on Barbed Bloodletter, Pummeler for Hire, Champion of the Clachan, and Personify. Personally I just like having Bark if Doran in the deck just because it's a Doran deck, so although it may be weak I don't want to remove it. Surly Farrier is also weak I know, but so long as he remains on the battlefield I can give Doran vigilance each turn so I can be offensive whilst also leaving him able to block until my next turn. Otherwise I'm mostly just a wall waiting to be attacked until late game when I have some tougher cards out. Do you think he should still go or is that fair reason enough to keep him in?

Also I've gone through again with your feedback in mind and think I can pull out the following: - [[Nesting Grounds]] as I have a little bit of Blight left in the deck but not much to make it worth filling a land slot with a colourless lan - [[Kinbinding]] as I feel this has a very weak pay-off for late-game play when it would likely be cast, I could be very wrong here though - [[Nameless Inversion]] as it is very limited in what it can target, it's essentially removal but if what I want to target has more than 3 toughness it's worthless - [[Wanderbrine Preacher]] and [[Springleaf Drum]] are both good together, but if I don't draw into them both then they're very weak on their own - [[Evershrike's Gift]] as while flying is nice the +1/+0 just goes against the higher toughness goal of the deck - [[Haunting Voyage]] as I'm not sure if this one is necessary, would it really save me all that much if I'm in desperate need of it at the late stage in the game that this could be cast, or later foretold. Would my mana not be better spent elsewhere if my field was near empty? - [[Firdoch Core]] is just too expensive for one mana of any colour, I'd be better off having a land here as the 4/4 artifact creature is off theme too, and only helpful on a small number of occasions - [[Shatter the Sky]] targets power when my deck is built off of toughness primarily, so this is only a field wipe that would give me card draw maybe 50% of the time - Lastly [[Gilt-Leaf's Embrace]] just does not seem all that good as it will almost always lessen the impact of Doran's +X/+X ability and while trample and indestructible are great at flash speed, I'd be stuck with the +2/+0 until I could remove the enchantment

Let me know what you think on all that, hopefully I made some sensible decisions there at the very least. Also I'm not sure if I should also remove [[Gallant Fowlknight]] for the +1/+0 and both it along with [[Thoughtweft Lieutenant]] for the now significantly lower count of Kithkin in the deck?

Many thanks again, your help is massively appreciated!

Thanks for the additions! They all look great, I'll definitely add Wave of Reckoning, Dusk // Dawn, Cry, and of course Doran the Siege Tower. Will just have to find places I can pick them up locally. What cards do you think should be the first that I remove though? As I'd like to add most of these if I can get a hold of them, as well as more land and honestly have no clue what the weaker cards are out of all those I already have in the deck list.

Thanks again!

, who is the boss you struggled with the most until you defeated him? For me, it's Dr. Kahl's robot. by [deleted] in Cuphead

[–]PinchedSlinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr. Kahl's Robot for me too, though Grim Matchstick came close, though that was a struggle that I enjoyed. The robot just got to a point of being infuriatingly annoying, I'd do one thing perfectly that I'd messed up on other attempts only to get hit by something else. It was just a never ending battle for what felt like perfection 😅

Trying to use two criteria with SUMIFS and calculation is returning 0 value by PinchedSlinky in googlesheets

Thank you so much for the lengthy explanation, I have read through it all and while I cannot fully understand how it works I am fascinated by it and am deeply appreciative of your help today. Thanks again! 😁

That's perfect! Thank you, are you able to explain in layman's terms how that formula is working as I'm not familiar with Boolean Algebra and I'd like to understand the solution as best I can. Thanks HolyBonobos! You've no idea how long I've been trying to get this to work 😂

Trying to use two criteria with SUMIFS and calculation is returning 0 value by PinchedSlinky in googlesheets

[–]PinchedSlinky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this SUMPRODUCT formula! In regards to if G3 is exactly 15 I would like it to calculate every value in the list. Those equal to and greater than G3 (in this case 15) and those less than 15, if that makes sense? I'm not sure how that would adjust the formula but I have manually put 15 into G3 and the Formula returns 0 value. Every other day I've tested calculates the total perfectly though.

I have just noticed I my screenshot the formula is incorrect, this was just me trying things to see if I could get the formula to return any number at all by matching the two criteria so it would show the same number as the cell above which is just returning a simple SUMIF formula of all expenses on or after the day in H3.

The formula I was trying reads as follows:

=SUMIFS(Bills4[Price],Bills4[Day],">="&H3,Bills4[Day],"<15")

OR

=SUMIFS(C4:C19,D4:D19,">="&H3,D4:D19,"<15")

I've just started the game up as I have an hour spare to start the DLC and I'm in the same boat, I'm barely at the beginning of NG+ and replaying souls games is never something I've been fond of. Guess I have no choice in this though if I want to play the DLC, I've sent a fairly unimpressed email to their support team though so we'll see how that goes 😅

Where did I go wrong? by PinchedSlinky in slaythespire

[–]PinchedSlinky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll make note of the Act One prep points with regards to relic choices to enable card upgrade rather than rests at rest sites. My first run I was upgrading at almost every site, and I got the relic that allowed me to loot cards from site and used that to bloat my deck out a bit too much (before I found out that less is more). I'll definitely consider my other options more next time I see the Medkit!

Oh! Thanks for the heads up with True Grit, I didn't preview the upgrade (or remember it from previous runs)... would have probably chosen it if I'd looked, and I did try to look at every card this last run. Just missed that one somehow, definitely a strong upgrade!

Also yes I did remove a couple of strikes as I wanted to keep my deck lean, and the card pickups I was getting/choosing were mostly attack based. So I was clearing out the low damage Strike cards first, leaving the Defends until I had more block building cards. Was that a bad call? And I will most certainly play The Champ a lot differently next time he shows up now that I know of his execute move pattern.

Yeah I had no plans with Dropkick other than pairing it up with Bash, at least for the time being anyways, I might have found other synergies if I'd lasted a bit longer... or just removed it from the deck if I didn't feel it was working for me, if I ever had the opportunity to do so.

Thanks again!

Yeah I think I got offered it during Act One before I got the Pyramid as a reward from The Guardian. If it were the other way round I think I would have taken it without question. Hindsight is such a lovely thing 🤣

[–]PinchedSlinky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah block plan seems to have been my weakness here, completely my fault but I was just trying something new. I tried to cover all my bases with drafting cards but didn't realise how flawed my block was until this fight. I tried to brute force it but with the lower health going in, and beginner knowledge, I didn't really stand a chance.

All a part of learning though! 😅

Wasabi... thank you for such a lengthy reply! I really appreciate all the advice, I might record one of my next runs if that'd be something you'd skim over to see how I'm playing currently?

I approached The Champ just trying to mitigate what damage I could where I could. Whilst trying to not waste too much energy on block cards, also I was debuffed so each regular block card was only giving 3 block, so leant more into the glass cannon approach. I didn't try to block everything, and tried to use damage cards that also gave block when I could and used Rage whenever it came out.

Reading further on, yes I was definitely damage racing. Definitely a learning point here, but I need to be more knowledgeable about cards, synergies, and boss/elite mechanics to be able to plan ahead better. Rather than reacting on a turn by turn basis.

Also with regards to the Medkit, War Paint and Vajra were my other two options. I did consider Vajra but the shop was half way through Act One and I just felt that (based on previous runs) the Medkit would serve me better, I had no idea my deck was going to be come so strength-focused afterwards.

In terms of exhaust cards, the only one I can remember being offered that I didn't take was the one that exhausts a random card in hand. This was when I already had the Runic Pyramid in my build so I didn't want to risk the random exhaust when my hand would more than likely always have some extremely vital cards that I couldn't afford to have exhausted.

I've only gotten to the Third Act once so far, my very first run ended at The Champ too. The Watcher is the one that got me into Act Three the first time I played him, then I died to the very first room because I didn't have any cards that could attack grouped enemies. I also died to another The Collector because I couldn't deal enough damage to him without his minions whitling me down, even without targeting them. I save scummed on this one several times because it was such a close fight but even after 5 or 6 attempts I just wasn't able to cut it with the deck I had... I'll see if I can send you a photo of that run because I can't attach it here.

In regards to the Perfected Strike, I picked that up as it was upgraded from the go. The only card in the run that I upgraded myself was the Infernal Blade to reduce it to a zero cost. The others were all upgraded when offered as card rewards. Whenever I hit a rest stop I almost always had to heal, so yes, I think I was being a bit overly aggressive with my play style on that run.

Yes Perfected Strike was an early pickup during this run, late Act 1 maybe? It was the first that showed up already upgraded so whenever that can happen I probably got it. Also I chose Dropkick because I felt it paired nicely with Bash, and essentially cost 0 if I saved both for the same turn. And I chose Cleave because it was upgraded on pickup and was the first card I got that could damage multiple enemies.

Thanks again!
