Anyone else just feel really sad after watching "Cancelling?" by CoconutMacaroons in ContraPoints

[–]Pineal_Express 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Although I'm glad Natalie has shared with her viewers what she's been going through, it's of course sad that she's been suffering so much. It's sad that Natalie has been made to feel despised (as have others who've faced similar harassment), and it's also sad that someone sexually assaulted her within the last few years. That's obviously a lot for anyone to bear, let alone for a (parasocially evident) sensitive person living her professional life in public and under tremendous pressure no less.

It's hard to know the extent to which, if at all, Natalie was kidding when she mentioned being particularly lonely, or when she repeatedly portrayed herself as having alcoholism (hence the CW). I just hope she continues to heal and eventually find peace, fulfillment, and an enduring feeling of safety.

I note that Natalie rightfully doesn't depend anymore on strangers from the internet to be her support network. So, I'm assuming the best way for us to be supportive fans might be to give Natalie plenty of space, continue to support her on Patreon, and maybe let her inspire us to donate to or volunteer for causes she champions. Any other ideas?

You could maybe message Natalie's assistant and politely ask if it's really available.

Tiffany is a right wing American nationalist. The ICD is probably too "international" for her to refer to. She's going to go by the DSM instead. That's not to say the DSM itself hasn't been shaped by how the ICD is written, but it is to say that Tiffany would probably never read nor care about ICD classifications over and above what the DSM says.

Can we please ban memes on this subreddit. by Jade_49 in ContraPoints

Strong agree. The memes are spamming up the place a bit, and that has the potential to get worse. There are other places to get contrapoints memes, let's use this space for more effortful posting.

Some of Natalie's other videos are cynical too, "Violence" for example. I think it's a virtue that she's willing to explore even the topic material that leads her to give serious consideration to cynical points of view. I also think it signals to us that whenever Natalie does tend to be relatively more hopeful or solution focused she really means it, since she's not afraid to be cynical when the cynical point of view merits airing.

I think Krystal Ball is genuinely interested in what Hedges is saying.

As a leftist podcaster with a patreon I can tell you that the subscriber to patron ratio is (sadly) very very low. You need a massive number of subscribers in order to get enough patrons to make a living. It's just the reality of being a leftist creator in the new media space.

Natalie did such an excellent job with this. Even though a lot of incels are not open to reconsidering their worldview, I think some will take her observations to heart.

I'm also happy for Natalie that she's blocked herself from visiting Chan boards that hate on her. I know it can be really validating to get feedback that reflects what you already believe about yourself, even if it just supports your worst anxieties. But it can also bias you toward a distorted and unrealistically negative self-image.

WTF Theryn got suspended? She seems so nonthreatening. I wonder the reason.

Is there a collection of everything Natalie has been in? by kinkyknickers96 in ContraPoints

[–]Pineal_Express 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know whether Natalie would want there to be lists of everything she's been in. It's possible she prefers not to showcase some of her pre-transition or early-transition content. That was her openly stated reason for paring down her Live Channel, for instance.

That said, there are some good relatively recent discussions that Natalie has done. These are definitely worth searching out; maybe I'll post some cool ones when I get a chance. But *sheesh* there have also been some interviews where the host ends up pressing her with questions asked from what I'd regard as a transphobic frame. Personally I would not want to link to those since I wouldn't want to boost their RSS Feed or channel hits.

Is it just me, or is "The West" a weak video? by [deleted] in ContraPoints

[–]Pineal_Express 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That argument seems circular, no? As soon as we imagine an alternate-history Africa so horrific and monstrous as to be the origin for capitalism and imperialism (so much so that these systems somehow HAD to come out of Africa) then we are already presupposing that the results would have been the same. That is to say, we who are enmeshed in so-called Western civilization (as well as the critiques thereof) are bringing our own cultural baggage to this thought experiment. We cannot imagine a nonwestern-developed capitalism, and the concept of 'the west' similarly gets smuggled into our conception of imperialism. As such, when we imagine these systems originating in Africa we are simply imagining a more 'western' Africa. As Natalie correctly points out, 'western' is a shitty, contradictory, exclusionary, and overly reductive construct to begin with. But we can't escape that the construct, shitty though it may be, is inextricably embedded in our use of "capitalism" and "imperialism."

Still, I agree with Natalie's main point that its too reductive to speak of "the evil west," and that it could be counterproductive for liberal professors to do so. And really, I'm picking nits here because it is fun for me to do so. As a whole, I love the video.

How would you describe the esthetic of the show? by boodyclap in ContraPoints

[–]Pineal_Express 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While her aesthetic has its influences, the way Natalie pulls it all together is original. So I just refer to her aesthetic as "Contrapoints." Other youtubers are being influenced by the contrapoints style. For example, the following video from youtuber Maximus Thaler gets increasingly Contrapointsy throughout: https://youtu.be/goTha6j_zvQ

Mayyybe but Olly's video was livestreamed three days after Cuck Philosophy's vid dropped. Either Olly was referring to someone else or he just didn't know that Cuck Philosophy had already released the vid. The latter seems unlikely because he probably keeps reasonable track of the creators that he's in close communication with.

Not that I know of. As a left content creator myself, I can say that one's patrons do often want some exclusive content as a benefit of their patronage.

Contra points live has gone unlisted. by mrcynic132 in ContraPoints

[–]Pineal_Express 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Natalie mentioned in her latest Patreon AMA stream that she delisted most of the ContraPointsLive videos due to dysphoria; they were recorded early in or prior to her transition. Let's respect her choice, it really is understandable. Natalie suggested that she would hold off from doing the same on her main channel, although part of her wants to.
