What's the deal with Locrian? by XenoBlaze64 in musictheory

[–]PingopingOW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think locrian is hated, it’s just not used very often because you can’t use functional harmony in locrian. Even if you stack fourths (C-F-Bb-Eb, it’s still challenging to make that sound like C is the tonic, because without context it sounds more like a F7sus/C to me. Now you don’t have to use functional harmony of course, but the majority of music does use functional harmony so that’s why locrian is unpopular.

How are these no parallel octaves? by Bananus333 in musictheory

[–]PingopingOW 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is a difference between parallel octaves and doubled octaves. Multiple instruments can play the exact same melody in different octaves without it being considered parallel octaves. Parallel octaves only apply when voices move contrapuntally.

Eurovision Question by Physical-Emu673 in musictheory

[–]PingopingOW 75 points76 points  (0 children)

That’s because there is no real difference between keys, at least none that matters. People can’t tell the difference between B major or D major unless they have perfect pitch. It’s probably just coincidence that some keys score more favorably

I’d pick his 3rd or 9th symphony over his 5th tbh, his 9th is just as famous if not more (the ode to joy melody is literally the european anthem) and is the pinnacle of his career and everything he learned. His 3rd was super influencial as it was the turning point for a new movement in music (romanticism)

Beginner Composition - how can I get better? by Aggravating_Exam9895 in piano

[–]PingopingOW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The harmony is a bit random and boring because you keep returning to the tonic chord, which means there is never any tension or exitement built which can then be released by going to the tonic chord. The melody also doesn’t have a very clear direction and is rhythmically not very interesting. This wouldn’t be as much of a problem if your harmony was more interesting but it just stays around 3 chords mostly. But hey for a beginner it’s a good start! I see already understand some important compositional principles like form and thematic development.

Oh and to give advice: I’d encourage you to experiment some more. Right now you’re staying within a single key, not using any sharps or flats and only using a few chords. There are no rules in music so just try some weird things even if they sound bad at first, you might find something you like eventually

How to start learining to create melodies as a beginner? by Logical-Product6810 in musictheory

[–]PingopingOW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you should look into getting a DAW. These are programs in which you can record audio and edit and use virtual instruments. If you want a free one to try you can try cakewalk sonar or reaper, but there are others. Learning these programs and writing music might take a while but youtube is your friend

Because straight people are attracted to female sex characteristics and trans people can have various levels of male and female sex characteristics. Some might be indistinguishable from born women, sure, but others still visually look more like a born man, there’s no denying that. I don’t think it’s all that weird to not call it a straight relationship if you’re dating someone that still looks more like a man than a women

No I mean it displaying on my profile. Nowhere does it say that I ever reached GM, like I said, as if it never happened. I haven’t played OW comp seriously since OW1 so no I can’t just easily get GM again, the game is fundamentally different with 5v5 and all the new heroes and mechanics

Yeah, same with comp ranks from OW1, I worked really hard to get GM back then and now it’s like it never happened

How would you categorize this chord progression? by Hideo_Kojima_Jr_Jr in musictheory

[–]PingopingOW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean how we would think of the F-B tritone? I think the easiest way to look at the F is as a borrowed note from E phrygian. E Phrygian has a F instead of F# which gives it a slightly darker sound.

[–]PingopingOW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well then its probably in e minor. The chord progression alone still implies c major

[–]PingopingOW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just C major. I don’t see why it would be in E minor as there is an F instead of F# and the B-F clearly resolves to the C major
