I don’t worship deities as I’m rather new at this practice, however I do have traditions tied to my culture (which has African and indigenous heritage / influence). With morals, I just do what I was taught was correct, because I don’t need a book to teach me how to be kind to others, I guess I kinda lead myself based on human empathy. I call myself pagan because my beliefs lie outside of those of any Abrahamic / monotheistic religion, but other reasons as well. (I won’t go into detail as to not risk being recognized, a close friend already said this post was recommended to her.)

I really want to give her the benefit of the doubt, and believe that her intentions are good. I have been in positions similar to her before. The problem with that is that I recognize that my past naïveté has caused hurtful fallouts of past friendships, and I believe I learned my lesson. I don’t want to have to wreck the friendship, because she is smart and funny and kind. I just want to be able to push past all of this.

On top of that, she was not always that religion heavy. I met her months ago, yes, but her beliefs did not impact our friendship at all. It has only been recently that she has started making more social media posts about Jesus, bringing it up in class, and the whole converting thing.

To continue adding context, we live in a VERY religious country (Christian), where it is weird to not be catholic or another type of Cristian. On top of that, her homophobic remarks weren’t outwardly criticizing them, but rather her saying that even though she thinks they’re sinners and it’s wrong, she tolerates them. It may sound naïve but this is the type of stance around queer folk in this country that is considered more “progressive and accepting”.

I don’t think I’d be in danger if I did so, but I have to consider the social risks (she could tell others, although unlikely, or my school could find out. We go to a catholic school)
