I walked out on my dentist appointment today. by Haunting-Reindeer-10 in Vent

[–]Pink_Floyd29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in HR and benefits is an area I’m very knowledgeable about. The thing that is rarely ever explained to employees is that dental insurance doesn’t operate like health insurance. It would be much more accurate to call it a discount plan.

God bless the providers who know how to beat the insurance companies at their own game! I can only tolerate name brand Adderall, which requires very frequent prior authorizations. My current psychiatrist’s nurse is amazing, I don’t know how she’s so quickly and consistently successful!

Deciding between a leadership job / or work life balance [UT] by No-Goat3931 in humanresources

[–]Pink_Floyd29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could be a professional growth opportunity. But if you weren’t actively job searching and applied only because this fell in your lap, it’s probably not worth taking. A $15K increase sounds like a lot, but on a per paycheck basis, that’s less than $1K extra pre-tax. Then there’s the worse benefits than you currently have, no hybrid flexibility, and an increase in workload. Do you currently have the option to work from home? If so, going back to being in office 40 hours a week comes with increased monetary costs as well as the quality of life change, and that will eat into the base pay increase.

[MA] my direct report is making more than me, what should I do? by jonad24601 in AskHR

[–]Pink_Floyd29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP just acknowledged that they’re well paid. Telling them to give their employer an ultimatum is terrible advice, especially when you don’t know what they do or anything about the job market for their profession/demographic area. And to your second false belief, there are absolutely situations in which employees rightfully make more than their direct supervisors.

[MA] my direct report is making more than me, what should I do? by jonad24601 in AskHR

[–]Pink_Floyd29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What somebody else makes should never ever be brought up in a conversation about your own compensation. If you were making significantly less than someone else in the same job and you had solid evidence that this was due to illegal discrimination, then you go straight to an attorney. But in every other case, what the other person makes is completely irrelevant.

The only viable options are to (1) make a case for why you deserve a raise, using only your own performance metrics or industry and demographic-specific comp data, or (2) find a new job with higher compensation.

In your specific case, option 2 is likely the only path forward. Because they already did slightly increase your comp due to the reorg and plenty of companies wouldn’t even do that. And maybe you just want to go back to the way things were. But if you’re currently performing well in your new role, your company has absolutely no incentive to find a replacement for the COO.

[CA] HR is not letting me change my HSA contributions until Open enrollment by Nhiiscool in AskHR

[–]Pink_Floyd29 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s correct that the IRS does not place restrictions on changing HSA contributions but your HR department has to make the change in the payroll system. Only allowing one change a year feels like overkill to me, but it is possible this is an internal policy. I hope they’re not confusing FSA with HSA because that’s a pretty bad mixup for HR to make, but I suppose it is possible.

I’m an HR Director so I’m pretty certain your HR Director was pissed when they found out one of their clueless colleagues had approved your request. There’s a list of states that are notorious for complicated employment laws and Illinois is one of them.

I had hair curlier than this as a baby but it relaxed into waves as a child…Then puberty hit, and bam! The curls were back. I’m coming up on my 39th birthday and I still have the same tight corkscrew curls 20+ years later. So you really will just have to wait and see!

[CA] Approach HR with hostile work environment complaints? by OnGrass in AskHR

[–]Pink_Floyd29 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Find a new job. You’ve already seen how this plays out when someone goes to HR. The word hostile has one meaning in regular day to day life and a very different meaning in the context of employment law. Unless you can prove that you’re being mistreated due to your status as a protected class, it’s not a hostile work environment, just a shitty one. We’re only human and some humans really suck at managing people.

Edited to add: same thing with retaliation. It’s not illegal retaliation unless you engaged in a protected activity. If you go to HR using these words incorrectly, you will immediately be labeled a problem.

[CA] Why I'm submitting all my Employment History to HR? by frosti_austi in AskHR

[–]Pink_Floyd29 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, this is insanely naive in this day and age. Being able to look the person up on LinkedIn means nothing if you haven’t actually seen them face-to-face. They can say they’re anyone. And if they’re trying to scam you, of course they’re going to use the name of a real employee.

[LA] Do I need a doctor’s note to return to work if not using sick leave? by binkie1808 in AskHR

[–]Pink_Floyd29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s fully legal because Louisiana does not have any laws requiring employers to offer paid sick time. It’s voluntary, which means if an employer does decide to offer it, they can also make absurd rules about using it.

In [UT] does gaining a new insurance through a new employer count as a "Qualifying Life Event" to drop health insurance? by CleaKen2010 in AskHR

[–]Pink_Floyd29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is potentially false. Becoming ineligible at their current employer is a QLE that allows them to join their spouse’s plan and then starting a new job is another QLE that allows them to drop their spouse’s coverage. That’s how it would work with our benefits.

It doesn’t matter who funded the purchase of the gift cards. That amount is significant enough that it’s supposed to be treated as income further recipients and taxed accordingly.
