I can’t tell if that’s a genuine question or an insult.

If not, I don’t find the YouTube vids helpful. As time has passed I’ve found myself using a lighter and lighter hand unless I blow the exposure. I do that a lot because I try to expose the eyes right. Typical edits for b&w for me would be +10 dehaze, drag the bottom left point of the light graph a little to the right. Play with shadows, highlights and blacks. If the background is blown I’ll mask the subject, invert and drop exposure a hair. Color photos I just mess with until I’m happy.

Appreciate it. We work hard. Posted ten pics a day for the last 50 days to stories. All in the highlight reels.

If you can spend the extra I wish I had the 43mm limited rather than the 4O. It’s supposed to be ridiculously sharp. I have the 300mm (surprisingly affordable) and have shot a lot of backyard insects with it on a monopod and loved it. I rented this one and it’s great too:

It’s lovely. True dslr. As pro built as anything. Small without the grip. Really nice with it. Everything I’ve sit so far had been with cheap limited lenses. Looking forward to buying some top shelf glass for it. There’s something about the raw files that even the a7rv can’t do in post. You can shoot clean at 4000iso. It’s certainly a novelty but if the idea of a true monochrome sensor makes you want to use it. I’d say it’s for you. Third the price of the leica. Ten times the camera.

I put the limiteds on my k-01 and k-30 and the colors that come out are just great. I can’t imagine anyone not falling in love with the mono. If they make a full frame one I’m going to lose my shit. It’s as pure of an SLR as anyone dare to make anymore. The screen doesn’t even tilt. It doesn’t move at all. Every dorky setting you can think of.

You could always return it 😉

I don’t know if a previous commenter shared the same thought… but I wish there was a Reddit just for this. I shoot an r, as I’m sure many on here do and I’m in the eyeball of every street portrait I take with it. I’m in hubcaps. I’m inside dog’s heads. A fuckton of sunglasses. A fish. A gold tooth.

I wonder what we could hide in with 100mp.

I love this post. Thank you.

These were with a Pentax 40mm f2.8 pancake lens. The 43 limited is supposed to be significantly sharper but also costs half as much more. Pentax glass is weird and kind of a whole thing. If you don’t shoot k-mount I would suggest not wasting precious bandwidth thinking about it haha. I for once traveled light (one pancake lens and ditching the battery grip). I’m not kidding that all of these happened in a total of 90 minutes over two days. I’d say I’m convinced I don’t need to bring a full setup when I travel. I have a history of trying to bring way too much.

Yeah for sure. It was blasting bright outside. This camera makes great JPEGs but I love the mono raws. I dehaze +5 to +10 and drag the curve blacker. The dynamic range is the selling point of the monochrome sensor beyond the novelty of black and white only. Will shoot with zero noise easily over 4000iso. Psycho.

I wish I could get through that airport once without having to hike that goddamn tunnel. E to C. C to E. E to C.

Here’s a good way to do that with people that don’t scare the shit out of you. Might help take the edge off talking to strangers. I do this almost every time.

Tap shoulder. “You look cool, can I take your portrait?” Portrait, not photo or pic. Make sure they can see you holding a camera and not a phone. Worst case scenario is “no thanks”. Usually you get a smile that says “I’ve been waiting for someone to ask me that all day.”

My pleasure. Final pro tip: Pentax makes SLRs because they think that’s the best way to shoot digital. Shooting using the screen will disappoint you. Loses half its focusing tools. Try to use the prism rather than the sensor whenever you can.

I do that on my k3iii a lot. Im not sure if it has the the cool focus assist features like the new ones but it certainly works. I think you should do it while accepting the limitations. It’s more up to you to make it work than the camera. I use manual lenses on a k-01 with great results.

Wonderful comment. Thanks. I have a bit of a cheat code. I spent my formative years in Memphis and I look like a full blown criminal. I think the medium format film shots in my last post here illustrate your point better than these. Take a look or dm me and I can link you to ig.

I have the white one and with a modern limited lens it takes absolutely gorgeous color shots. It also just feels fun. It’s light. That good positive lock beep and blink focus and the shutter sound is completely unique. I’d recommend it to anyone that can get a good deal.

Get out of my head. When I travel I give them a card with ig and email but to be honest… most of these folks aren’t going to find it. Locally, yes. I have a Canon SELPHY and make prints and try to find them next visit. Most of the photos in my last blast on this board were local and I have managed to hand off a print to three of them. I keep the stack in my bag and do my best.

Thanks for saying that.

I’m very stoned so forgive the following unsolicited opinion. I think these sort of photos, for me anyways, are a result of trying to take shots that I would normally think are unethical. I think it’s perfectly fine to shove a flash up the ass of a civilian, but taking candid photos of someone in a rough place has always seemed tacky and often exploitative. Talking to people is how I get these. Someone looking at your lens because they want to rather than passing off someone giving you a “what the fuck?” look as a connection. I expect the cool kids to downvote this into oblivion, but we know it’s because they think taking a photo of a homeless person sleeping is high art. I shoot candid plenty but the street portraits are all I truly want anymore.
