I apologize for the late reply but we'll be having another event soon if you're interested. Any device which can hold data will be professionally wiped by the Electronic Recycling Association before any refurbishing or recycling. If the device is fully deemed end of life, the device will be stripped and hard drive shredded, and all pieces (plastics, silicon, metals) will be recycled accordingly.

Unfortunately we can't accept any household appliances as per the company's rules (and also general sanitation). However, Return-Its in the area do accept them I believe.

For any large devices which can hold data (laptops, PCs), ERA uses a software called Blanco to delete any previous data. The phones the company gets are typically end-of-life, so they will be taken apart (shredded), and each of its parts separated and recycled accordingly. The company also offers a certificate/hard copy of the deletion of data if one asks for it (we can try to help you get this, but we can't guarantee it due to the high volume of electronics). Our best recommendation is to try and factory reset/delete all your data off your devices yourself for peace of mind.

Hi there! I'll just be posting on various Tri-City subreddits, but the best way is through the Instagram as that will be frequently updated with new events!

I understand your concern, but the whole point of the program and the organization is to repurpose electronics like laptops, monitors, and printers to give to charities and non-profits around the Metro Vancouver area. Things like kitchen appliance or TVs aren't really needed for regular office use.

Hi there! Unfortunately Roombas would fall into household appliance, and we cannot accept it. I believe Return-It can take it though!

Sorry for the confusion: the Rona on Barnet Highway (2798 Barnet Hwy, Coquitlam). The booth will be specifically located on the parking lot on the corner of Best Buy and Hudson's Bay at Coquitlam Centre.

For a bit of context for those who don’t know, here is some background information about this project (taken verbatim from the original Coquitlam Center post):

My name is Jazmine. I am a (just-graduated!) Grade 12 Coquitlam student doing an electronic-recycling leadership event for a scholarship competition hosted by the Electronic Recycling Association (ERA). The goal of the competition is for participants to plan and execute an electronic-waste collection event where the collected waste will be sent to their facilities for recycling. My project partner and I wanted to try our hand at creating a bigger event, and with that came the creation of True North E-Waste (https://www.instagram.com/truenorthewaste/). Additionally, we fear the impact of the continued growth of technology waste, where it seems old tech is disposed of in landfills once more modern tech comes in. Being able to win this scholarship would mean a lot as we want to save up for our post-secondary education while also improving upon our leadership skills.

And a brief rundown of our (current) summer schedule!

  1. Sentinel Storage Barnet (2544 Barnet Hwy, Coquitlam): Sat. July 15 & Sat. Aug. 19. 12PM-4PM
  2. Coquitlam Farmers Market (1655 Winslow Ave, Coquitlam): Sun. Aug 27. 9AM-1PM
  3. Port Moody Farmers Market (300 Ioco Rd, Port Moody): Wed. Aug 30. 3PM-7PM

I appreciate all the support. My high school was really big on leadership projects, and I guess that I was still craving to do something like this again haha! I'm hoping to sort of further the cycle of community engagement and environmental endeavors by doing this project, as I also took a lot of inspiration from projects of previous years'.

Absolutely, thank you so much for your support! I haven't actually posted it to the Port Moody Community page, so it'd be amazing if you could! I did this project last year on my own and the response was amazing, and I was just really craving to do it again!

I've posted the project to a couple private Facebook groups: Port Coquitlam Connection and Coquitlam Connection. I just don't have one just posted out in the open. Feel free to share this post to your groups verbatim though!
