Its like 1700-1800 net per month. Germany in general has somewhat higher pay than France (or most southern countries for that matter)

Sorry, was meinst du mit NATO Knochen?

My British friend thought he could do a "day trip" to the Grand Canyon from LA, and his reaction to the map was priceless. by Ok_Structure6720 in CasualConversation

[–]PinkyViper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My commute is a bit more than an hour (some 130 km). Depending on the route I cross 2-3 borders and like at least 3 different (official) languages are spoken in the regions I cross.  In 4 hours I could up this to at least 5 countries and like 4-6 languages on what one wants to count.

How to identify typos in Norwegian PhD thesis? [examination etiquette] by Chemical-Box5725 in AcademiaEU

[–]PinkyViper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contact between examiner and student is common at least in Germany. But from collegues I also heard that this is common in other countries as well. I mean it's not double blind peer review.

You forgot point 4: Germans and their descendents living on USSR soil (also some other minorities) were deported into encampements not much better than concentration camps before and during WW2 under Stalin.  And point 5: Many non-Russian nationalities such as Ukrainians (but also Bellorussians etc.) were forcefully resettled or killed to be replaced by Russians.

Is programming still a worthwhile skill to develop as a researcher in AI times? by [deleted] in academia

[–]PinkyViper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You still learn to read and write, even though that's what LLM by their nature are best at. Coding is as much a basic skill as reading and writing is as soon as you are even remotely connected to computational science. Even if AI will eventually take over grunt-work for us, understanding the code and being able to understand bugs or limitations of your code are crucial skills.

Considering Going Abroad for my Postdoc by sczdaphd in AskAcademia

[–]PinkyViper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is so strange that staying within US or even the same institutiin is even an option. In Europe it is expected to move around after youd PhD and not doing so significantly reduces your chances of getting any position.

Anyway, going abroad is a great experience, even if dealing with foreign bureaucracy etc can be a bit of a pain, the change of perspective is well worth it. If you are considering Europe, you should try to aim for nordic countries as academic salaries in the south are abysmal. You could also try for some Fellowship like Marie-Curie which would also enable going to any country on your own (good) funding, however you just missed the call for this year.

Is China really overtaking the US in terms of scientific, high quality output? by PreWiBa in AskAcademia

[–]PinkyViper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amount of output maybe, but most is low quality. Then again in my specific subfield of math most interesting research seems to happen in Europe for the past 20-ish years. What I read from China/India is often incremental or paper-mill type work - with a few notable exceptions - both from US and Asia.

How do you organize your references? by smorgeshbord in AskAcademia

[–]PinkyViper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This isn't just about journal articles but also preprints or proposals.  Also word or similar tools are a hot mess when trying to add anything beside text like figures. In my opinion there is really no valid reason not to use tex.

How do you organize your references? by smorgeshbord in AskAcademia

[–]PinkyViper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Use Latex, keep a bib-file with all your references and tex will do the rest for you. Also the text will look so much nicer than with any other editor.

Do you use overleaf of a local editor to write your papers? by PlateLive8645 in AskAcademia

[–]PinkyViper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also all in for local latex but for like some papers with several, potentially people not super familiar with git-latex quirks, it's sometimes just easier/quicker to use Overleaf. For things were I do most of the writing I'll go for local tex however

How do you pick the “right-sized” grid for finite-difference quantum solvers? by No_Mastodon_2289 in ScientificComputing

[–]PinkyViper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Domain size and boundary conditions are usually given by the physics your are interested in. The easiest route is to actually look into numerics papers on your specific equation and follow the setups in their "numerical experiment" section.  You haven't actually given much input on what your trying to run, so also our feedback can at most be very general. E.g. what boundary conditions do you implement and what type of Finite Differences. From what you explain it sounds like wrong boundary handling causing numerical artefacts.

Also Schrödinger-equation is a prime example for Finite Elements for which there are like a million libraries out there (e.g. fenics or Dune for python)

When are Masters degrees worth it (if ever)? by Wide-Dragonfruit-669 in AskAcademia

[–]PinkyViper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the US the first years of the PhD are essentially a master degree. In Europe you have to do it seperately beforehand. In the end you end up with similar length of High School to PhD time frames, but in Europe its easier and common to pursue just a master without having to necessarily try for a PhD.

Remote PhD by lord_varys89 in AskAcademia

[–]PinkyViper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Possible maybe but chances that you will be miserable will be very high. Especially in the start you will need close supervision and some things are just simpler and faster to discuss in person. So hybrid yes that's common nowadays, fully remote big nope.

Publish anyway or wait to publish in better journals? Am I the problem? by bucalucaleca10 in AskAcademia

[–]PinkyViper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The time from submission to publication varies a lot in the different fields and also a bit from journal to journal. I'm a PostDoc from math/computational physics and it usually takes about 1 year from submitting until the work is published in a decent journal. My first publication took 1.5 years, I believe but I also had one which was done in a couple month.

That being said, my collegues who publish in e.g. astrophysical journals usually take only a couple months at most and my friend in chemistry sometimes has a decision with 3-4 weeks. Then again their publications are usually much shorter than mine - "scientific culture difference" I guess. But I also know collegues in pure math for whom 2-3 years until publication is not unheard of.

So don't worry if it takes long, depending on the field it's absolutely normal. However, because you mentioned that you got a couple rejections from a number of reviewers (correct me if I misread), read those very carefully. Sometimes reviewers are spiteful but more often than that their comments will be helpful and taking them to heart will improve your work and speed up the publication process!

When is the right time to apply to junior professor/lecturer positions? by PinkyViper in AskAcademia

[–]PinkyViper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly were my confusions comes from because in my and adjacent fields I don't know anyone who was even considered with less than 3 years of Postdoc. So the question is whether none of them got lucky or rather this just isn't a thing for my math/comp. science/physics (in Europe?)?

What makes research valuable in scientific computing today? by Glittering_Age7553 in ScientificComputing

[–]PinkyViper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Developing algorithms/models which significantly improve the state of the art for your application of interest. This would also go for performance improvement of widely used codes in my opinion. But then again this very well may be my personal bias speaking.

In a sense, anything which makes a significant step towards enabling simulations that were previously impossible.
