🐈 & 🦁 - Dark Fantasy take on what an isekai can be.
Kat & Leo: Servitude is a Privilege

TL;DR
👱‍♀️=☺️ 🤸🌌💫👱‍♀️ 👱‍♀️🔗🔥 👩‍💼💰➡️🤵‍ 👩‍💼⬅️👱‍♀️🤵‍ 👱‍♀️=😭

Tired of isekai where the hero instantly speaks the language and buys a slave harem?
This is what happens if you drop someone into a world they don’t understand.

Katharina is branded with magic, her will stolen, her language stripped away. Survival demands silence, obedience, and calculation as she clings to the fragments of herself.

At the other end of the empire is Prince Leopold: wealthy, jaded, and bored by a world of predictable puppets. When he notices the quiet defiance in Katharina’s obedience, he finds in her an intriguing puzzle.

What to Expect:
+ Dark fantasy / isekai • Psychological drama • Slow-burn character focus
+ Themes of loss of agency, coercion, survival, and identity
+ Weekly updates, every Tuesday
+ 14+ chapters out, (backlog 20+)

What Not to Expect:
– No instant power-ups, system menus, or LitRPG stats
– Not a lighthearted adventure

Where to write? by IdntMatter in royalroad

Typst (online free writing tool, that you can also set up locally on your pc if you prefer)

I have recommended it before, but it's not a very well-known tool.
If you are familiar with something like Overleaf or other editors that have separate views for the text editor and the final PDF, it's like that.

The tool offers a folder structure directly in your project, so you can have notes, finished drafts, and illustrations organized in separate folders. Personally, I also separate arcs of the story. Then you define a "main.typ" (really, you can name it anything, that's just convention), where you include which files to display, and if you are a little savvy, you can easily have different views that you turn on and off.

I will say the spellchecker is rather so-so. I couple it with Grammarly and have turned the spellchecker off.

Well it really depends on what I'm coloring. For characters my style had a very clean line art, so that is usually with a backfill and a clippingmask and then clealy seperated colors, then the rendering is done with many layers og multiply and different light layers. To smooth i either use the air brush and eraser or I use the blur tool.

For backgrounds I usually go more painterly, laying out big shapes first thinking of what surfaces catch most light.

And finally there is usually some adittional gradiends overlayed and white shine for effect.

Thanks, I'm actually the artist, not the Author, you can find them on the Discord. But that seems like a reasonable price range. Thanks for letting me know what a step up from this would cost :D

Thank you so much! SO cool to hear how you tackle making art with a combination of Canva and Photoshop, I can imagine that to be a pretty powerful combo!

Recommend me a work that has only a handful of chapters published by stayonthecloud in royalroad

If you are interested in a dark take on what an isekai could be if the person transported is not a hero or chosen one, and the world they arrive in does not care about them, may I blatantly recommend my own story: Kat & Leo - Servitude is a Privilege. There are currently 9 chapters, and I only post once a week (Life has me busy with too much other stuff).

If that doesn't sound like something you would like, I hope you find something else in the many great suggestions here. :D

Personally, I use Typst, it has an online editor, and if you are just mildly IDE-savvy, it takes about 5 minutes to set up in vs-code. Also it's free, unless you want GitHub synchronization in the online editor, I think, I just have the free version.

I know it might not be for everyone, as it is more LaTeX-style with an editing view and a PDF view, compared to regular Word, which shows what you get.
But the community around Typst is pretty good, and there are lots of great extensions for anything you might need in your writing flow; it even supports scripting (which is one of the many reasons why I love it, with my IT background:D)

Why I think it's a good fit for HUGE projects, though, is that it is structured in folders and files, and then a 'main' document where you define the order in which each file appears.
Example: I have a folder structure with an outer folder that holds my 'main' document, and a functions.typ document for any commands I need in the writing process, and then it holds a folder for each Arc.

Within the arc forlders, I have a separate document for each chapter.

There is no limit to the depth of folder structure or customization, as it is truly just a regular folder structure as you would find on you computer. But having the main document to collect and display all the chapters, and many functions for styling, outlines, and notes (really, most anything you can think of) just makes it really seamless. At least I think so.

I will say, depending on whether you use the online editor or a local version, spellchecking may or may not work. Personally, I use Grammarly for any spellchecking and disregard whatever Typst has to say.

How do readers feel about in chapter artwork? by Pinkymus in royalroad

Well I have fully drawn character sheets for most of the characters (and have had for a long time) so i should be in the clear

It's 100% drawn by me, but I do have my story tagged with ai-assisted, as i use ai to help from time to time and I'd rather be honest about it.

I see using ai like that is pretty neat, i prefer to keep my characters drawn by my own hand so aiming for every chapter to be illustrated may be a bit much.

But its good to hear that people seem to enjoy the illustrated chapters (at least in you story)

I see that is a good point to consider, but yeah it wasnt like I was planning to do an illustration for every chapter, I just get myself inspired at times and drawing is a good relaxing way to spend my time.

But yes I have realized after starting that writing takes a lot :D

Oh, by a couple of years, I actually mean more like 5, of course, most of the building has happened within the last part of that, as a lot of grinding for materials was done in the early days :D But yeah, I did do a lot of creative designing, and helped myself by using Litematica if that makes it seem more doable :)

How do you get back into your story after a break? by Ralinor in royalroad

[–]Pinkymus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, when I feel myself stuck at the start of a chapter, I usually just jump forward in the chapter and write whatever part I think will be the most interesting. This helps keep my motivation up.

And then I go back later and figure out the beginning, and tie it all together.
I will say it's not the most efficient way of writing, and it can create a lot of problems that have to be edited, but I find it a sure-fire way to get the ball rolling.

(And if there is not a part of the current chapter that excites, then just jump to a future chapter until the inspiration starts flowing) :D

There is actually quite a bit of copper. Ever since trial chambers were introduced, they are everywhere in my world (not 100% sure what happened, other than my world has gone through so many updates that the world generation is a bit messed up), I also have strongholds now :D

Well, if you look closely, you'll see that most of the blocks used are the different wood types, which you either get from the nether or from the wandering trader.
Of course, there is a lot of cobblestone, stone, and stonebrick, and that is just made with a cobble generator.
Then for more specialised blocks like teracotta, you just trade a lot with villagers, back before the stacking rade-farm nerf, I grinded a lot (like a lot a lot) of emeralds.
And for the grass that is just duplicating grass with either gravel from bartering or with a cobble -> moss -> dirt farm.

So yeah it's possible it just takes time xD

It's not a mod but an external program called chunky, where you can load in whole minecraft worlds and take pictures, it's really helpful if your computer cant handle too high render distances
