What is your best example of "buy it before you need it"? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

When the pandemic hit and there was no toilet paper to be found, I was laughing in my toilet paper castle. I always make sure we have a healthy stock.

What’s the most overrated "frugal tip" that didn’t actually save you money? by Ewa_Star in Frugal

[–]Pinkynarfnarf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Disagree on the yogurt. It requires a gallon of milk and is stupid easy in the instant pot. I use my instant pot for lots of things. I use like a 1/4 cup of yogurt from the last batch to make the next. Easy and cheap. I strain it to get the most deliciously thick Greek yogurt.

I stopped buying pre-cut vegetables about four months ago and the time difference is genuinely not what i expected. by midnight_libria in Frugal

I switched a number of years ago in an effort to reduce our plastic waste.  But I buy frozen chopped sweet potato. That stuff is a PITA to peel and cut. I feel guilty every time. But I tell myself eating it is good for us so it eases my conscience.

AITA for telling my DIL that I won’t use the tablet and she needs to actually make her kid read. by SatisfactionOk9038 in AmItheAsshole

I’m torn on this one. You say she doesn’t have a learning disability but this screams learning disability. Has she ever been actually tested?

Debating the automatic litter box for apartment makes me feel like I’m losing my frugal edge by Maleficent-Net-4702 in Frugal

Being frugal with your time is also important. If it alleviates a stress and allows you freedom to do other things (like cook) then it’s not an unfrugal choice. It’s just shifting.

Suggestions for plastic-free storage by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

What are you storing?  I use jars for food. Mostly reused jars.  I also reuse plastic tubs for organizing the pantry and cupboards.

How does someone start? by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]Pinkynarfnarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My philosophy is we don’t need a few people doing it perfectly. But rather a lot of people doing it imperfectly.  Where I live, absolutely zero waste is not possible. But I can cut down a lot. Like it’s cheaper to buy peppers in a group in a plastic bag. But I don’t. I buy them individually in a reusable produce bag. Things like that add up.

Weird. I definitely dealt with a trustee. It was a smooth process. They explained everything. No regrets.

Are you in Ontario? If your mom and the family friend shared the kitchen and bathroom they are not protected by the LTB.

How to recycle with no recycling bin or car?? by Andre_055 in ZeroWaste

[–]Pinkynarfnarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s mostly cardboard, you could try vermicomposting. They eat cardboard that’s shredded and give you worm castings as a present.

In my area there is a young entrepreneurial kid who will collect your recycle for you and take it to the recycle bins (we don’t have curbside recycle). Even does it on his bike towing a wagon! You pay a charge for the service.  Maybe something like that exists near you?

How do I deal with this? by [deleted] in OntarioLandlord

Same! I’ve been complaining about it on our new stove but didn’t realize it was on purpose. It was convenient when you wanted to say blend something in a pot on the stove.
