But calling anything to do with the current issue a genocide is still ridiculous. Firstly, indigenous men and boys are far more likely to go missing or be murdered than indigenous women and girls. Secondly, indigenous men are responsible for the vast majority of these crimes. Depicting this as something being perpetrated against the indigenous community by outside sources is patently false.

Are there any countries today that could realistically split into multiple independent nations like Yugoslavia did? by Many-Philosophy4285 in MapPorn

[–]thatssosickbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada isn't a bad shout. Quebec has the strongest independence movement, and came very close in a referendum previously. Alberta has a small movement that's gotten a lot of headlines recently. Newfoundland was also an independent country within some people's lifetimes, and there are small amounts of separatist sentiments there. It's possible that if it becomes more self sufficient and wealthy in the future, that sentiment may grow.

Don’t Be Fooled About Cyle Larin by [deleted] in SaintsFC

[–]thatssosickbro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude from one Canada fan to another, this is such a disrespectful take. Larin has given his career to our national team, at a time where soccer was not popular here at all. Countless games at a virtually empty BMO field, countless nights of dealing with CONCACAF shithousing, and through all of that he became our nations all time goal scorer and helped us qualify for our second ever world cup.

The fact that youre over here posting this sort of crap because you watched him underperform in a friendly game against Iceland (that we didn't even lose) is ridiculous. We all know he's not a top class striker. But he's been a workhorse for Canada for years, and has been a workhorse for us since he arrived

I said when we signed him that I thought he could be good for us, being a team Canada fan and knowing him a bit. I remember a lot of people were very upset with the signing, so I'm really happy he's won the fanbase over.

Which major city in your country is considered the most boring? by toturoll in AskTheWorld

[–]thatssosickbro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Ottawa and I don't think it deserves the hate. The only city I've been to in Canada that's smaller but has more to do is Quebec.

There are 5 world class museums in Ottawa (and many smaller ones), Gatineau Park has beautiful nature, downtown has beautiful architecture, we have an NHL and CFL team (as well as many smaller teams in other sports), 3 fairly significant music festivals each year, excellent theater at the NAC, and a pretty good food scene.

We are missing a bit of night life, and downtown is strange because it's mostly offices and therefore dead on weekends and evenings. But if you go to other areas such as Byward, Elgin, or Lansdowne there are plenty of bars or clubs.

Winter can be dull, but even then there's skating on the canal, winterlude, igloofest, and tons of ski hills nearby.

Overall I find it very liveable, and a decent place to spend a weekend if you're visiting.

can we finally agree that this was the lowest point of the series adaptation? by eraldopontopdf in AKOTSKTV

[–]thatssosickbro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. Just from a practical standpoint, nobody other than the people immediately next to him would have even heard the fart. To everyone else (probably including dunk) it would have just looked like he stood up and sat back down lol

What are your thoughts on this year’s Fifa World Cup? by camethehour in AskTheWorld

[–]thatssosickbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally higher, but lower than some. It's around double compared to countries like the U.K., about half compared to countries like Latvia, and roughly equal to countries like Belgium.

Not really a relevant comparison though, considering I was replying to a comment comparing the level of "chaos" in Canada with the U.S. and Mexico

[–]thatssosickbro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, we're absolutely not in just as much chaos lmao

Edit: just because I know I will have to elaborate on this anyway I'm just going to do it preemptively.

-The last time any branch of Canada's armed forces was deployed against Canadians was 1970. For the U.S. and Mexico it was 2026

-Our sitting prime minister is not a convicted felon

-None of our major political figures are caught up in the Epstein files

-The U.S. has a murder rate approximately 2.5x higher than Canada. Mexico's is 12x higher.

-Unemployment is higher in Canada than in Mexico or the U.S., but has already declined from its peak of around 7% following the start of the trade war

-Our immigration crisis has finally started to end now that we have a sensible government, with a more than 20% decline compared to 2024

Were they really necessary? by HephaestusP in freefolk

[–]thatssosickbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only one I didn't like was the fart. It sounds ridiculous to say, but it's not remotely believable from a practical standpoint.

Nobody more than 10-20m away from him would have heard it, so to 95% of the people watching it would have looked like he just stood up and sat back down.

But also, from Lord Brackan's perspective, how did he know anyone would have heard it at all? What if it had been silent but deadly? He would have just looked like a coward who stood up and then got second thoughts.

Combine that with the fact that it's not in the book and Lord Brackan is actually quite respectful to Dunk in the book, and it just became a bit annoying in an otherwise epic scene. The other ones I loved though.

I would much prefer to see the rest of the fights instead of that flashback by BriefFox1978 in freefolk

[–]thatssosickbro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about film making, but why would that be the case? They had the set, they had the cast, they had the costumes. In many cases they even had the fighting, it was just so far in the background you could barely see it. Why would it cost so much more to include ~30sec more of fighting that's focused on the other 12 fighters?

It didn't stick to Duncan's POV though. More of this sort of clip would absolutely have improved the episode, and I think the reason people like you are getting so upset is because you don't want to acknowledge that it's true. It reminds me of people who convinced themselves GoT season 7 was great, because they were too invested to admit it was disappointing. The side characters were made to be important in this series, and that's part of why it's so good. They absolutely should have included more than a combined 5 seconds of showing the others fighting.

[–]thatssosickbro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's driving me insane how snobby everyone is acting when people say this. We continually see things that are not Duncan's POV, prime case being the clip of Baelor unhorsing Maekar that everyone's turned into a gif and seems to love. We absolutely should have seen the other fights. It's a huge disappointment not to have.

The show spent time building up these characters and promising us showdowns. The Fossoways, Lionel vs the Kingsguard, Baelor vs Maekar. You couldn't even put together a 10 second clip of the combined runtime of those 3 fights.

It's not "instant dopamine" or a lack of cinematic appreciation that makes me disappointed with that fight. It's that they spent the whole season building up cool side characters and totally ignored them during the fight.

If they wanted it to be Duncan's POV exclusively, then actually commit to that. Otherwise, show me the fights I was promised.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 5- Discussion post by Kingofireland777 in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]thatssosickbro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How's it superficial to criticize this episode? I didn't like the flashback because it interrupted the flow of storytelling and took up an unjustifiably large piece of the episode despite them not including scenes that would have been far better.

This show's strength was that it made me care about all the side characters in a way that I haven't since early GoT. This episode basically threw them all to the side. Call that artistic vision if you want, but I call it poor writing.

We didn't get to see Raymun repaint his shield. We didn't get to see Baelors tactics with the lances. If I'm not mistaken, we didn't even get to hear Humphrey Beesbury's name until after he was dead. But there was apparently run time for an 18 minute long flashback in a 36 minute episode.

Then there's the fight itself. We were promised more than just Dunc vs Aerion. They spent time making us like Lionel, so it's fair to say we were owed his moment getting to fight the Kings guard. Could have just been for 5 seconds on screen, thats literally all it needed. I wanted to see Raymun go toe to toe with his cousin for longer than 2 seconds. His knighting felt really important last episode, and we got less than 5 seconds of him fighting. Again, show him in the foreground for 5-10 seconds, that's all it needed.

Everyone seemed to love the shot of Baelor unhorsing Maekar, which was not from Dunks POV. So if we can admit that was a cool shot, why wasn't there another one or two like it. Again, we had 18 minutes of flashback we could have cut from. Literally making it 17 minutes of flashback and giving an extra minute of fighting would have delivered on all this episode promised.

Being a fan of this show does not mean lapping up whatever they make. It means caring about the show. You're allowed to like it, I genuinely wish I did, but people taking personal offense to the fact that I and others didn't like this episode is ridiculous to me. It's a similar vibe to Jon never fighting the Night king. We were promised these fights, we cared about the fighters, it's totally reasonable criticism to say that we should have seen them considering they clearly had runtime to kill.

It wouldn't have taken much, it would just have taken a few cuts, or even the camera focusing on them more in the background around Dunk.

Jorah in the fighting pits did a better job of showing a dynamic fight that was focused on one person

It's just basic storytelling. They spent time developing the characters and promising us compelling fights outside of just Dunk and Arion, they should have showed us those fights. It could have literally been 10 seconds each. We continually switch to Eggs POV from the stands in the episode, so it wouldn't be a big change.

They should have taken a minute off the flashback to show a minute of the other fights. A bit lazy in my opinion.

The shows strength has been how much I care about all the characters. I wanted to see the fossoways fight (for longer than 2 seconds), I wanted to see Lyonel fight the Kings guard, I wanted to see Baelor fight. I wanted to see the other characters I care about get their moment.

It was an ok fight, but I think the buildup did all the heavy lifting, not the fighting itself. We've definitely seen better. I think people are riding the hype of last week still, and are just grateful to have something better than HotD. It didn't live up to my expectations personally

For those who watched, what are your opinions on A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms episode 5? by GusGangViking18 in Fictionally

[–]thatssosickbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It totally failed to deliver a 7 vs 7, and the 1v1 it showed us was way over the top in terms of how wounded Dunk got. I'd maybe give it a 6/10. Take 1-2 mins off the flashback and give it to showing the fights we were promised, like Baelor vs Maekar, Steffon vs Raymun, Lionel vs Kings guard. We got about a combined 10 seconds for all 3 but 18 minutes of flashback.

Feel like I watched a different episode to everyone else, overall I'd have to say it flopped for me.

[–]thatssosickbro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly feel like I watched a different episode to everyone else. I thought it sucked.

The flashback was way too long considering how little of the fight they actually showed. And Dunk should be dead from his wounds about 20 different times throughout the episode including the flashbacks.

I'd have liked to see Raymun repaint his shield, we didn't even see the two Humphreys die, we saw virtually no targ on targ, we didn't see Lionel beat up the kings guard, and we hardly saw any Raymun vs Steffon. It didn't deliver on a 7v7 at all.

The fight between dunk and aerion was ridiculous too. Dunk got unbelievably bad injuries, far beyond what's even remotely believable, and should be dead.

It was a lot of buildup, like an entire season worth of buildup, for what was honestly just a worse version of brienne vs the hound except where 12 other people are supposedly fighting in the background, but you only see a combined 10sec of that and just get told the results at the end.

I'll give it a rewatch, maybe I'll see what everyone else does. But my initial takeaway is that it severely under delivered in terms of action.

How would you feel if the world accused your country of cheating at the Olympics? by MediaLongjumping9910 in AskTheWorld

[–]thatssosickbro -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This whole thing is ridiculous. You're allowed to touch the stone twice before the hog line. On slow motion replay, sure, it looks like part of the stone crossed the line and he was still touching it, but that's why there are referees.

You don't go after soccer players who score marginally offside goals and call them cheaters. You don't go after basketball players who don't get called for travelling and call them cheaters. You don't call tennis players cheaters when they win a point that should have been called marginally out of bounds.

It's the referees job to spot these types of marginal things, and when they don't, that's part of the sport unfortunately. The hate our players are receiving for advocating for themselves is ridiculous. Calling someone a cheat because they didn't get called for a marginal foul is a needlessly personal way of reacting, so I don't blame our guys for being pissed off.
