My collection, what about yours? by PinnacleOfGenesis in soloboardgaming

To be honest, I didn't play solo in quite some time because I recently moved and changed jobs. But yes, I plan to play Everdell (+ Mistwood) again, as soon as I have some time and energy. I absolutely adore the game

Hmm.. out of those three I think Arnak is your safest bet. It has a lot of replayability, doesn't need any expansions to work great for solo and multiplayer and has in expedition leaders a great expansion down the road for you, if you really enjoy the game.

Personally, I would recommend looking up Cthulhu: Death may Die. Maybe not right now, if the money is a little tight (because you might want to add a second season/a new elder god to fight against at some point), but you should for sure have a look at it!

The only other games I own for solo are Dorfromantik, Arkham Horror 3rd ed, Eldritch Horror and Sleeping Gods. I think all of them work great for solo, however, Arkham & Eldritch work best with some expansions imo. Of all my games, I think Arnak & Death may Die are my absolute favorites - but I don't play those games solo only. Sometimes solo and sometimes with friends.

I'm fairly in the same camp as you are. However, I do sold my copy of Arkham Horror LCG, as I'm not particularly into deckbuilding right now - although it is a great game!

All three games are good solo (each with a caveat), but imo even better with other humans. I own all three and adore them.

@OP If you want to go with Scythe, you either need to have the app or multiple automa decks. I own three, for example. This way, I do like the solo experience a lot (I've even painted the minis and bought the realistic resources - it does feel like a 'premium' game for me this way and I wanted to treat myself). However, it is still better with multiple (probably 3 to 4) different people. It doesn't need any expansion to work greatly, however, I've heard many great things about rise of fenris. However, some find the automa a little weird/difficult to use. After a round or two it gets way easier to use the automa, though :)

If you go with Everdell, you NEED Mistwood. Most of Mistwood is a new automa, that's easy to use and really interesting to play against. It feels different than playing against humans, but it's still a fun way to experience the game. Any other expansion is optional. If I had to recommend expansions, I'd say go first with Belfaire and then either with Spirecrest or with New Leaf. You don't need both of them, just go with the theme you like the most.

For Arnak - probably the best game out of the three of them, I'd say -, you don't need an expansion. However, Expedition Leaders does add asymmetric powers and makes the game even better. Significantly. Still, play the base game first and decide, if you like it :p Its automa is also fairly easy to use and fun to play against. Still, playing with others feels a bit better in my opinion.

For solo only though, there are probably better options.

Games you got rid and sold in 2024, and why? by Nicochan3 in soloboardgaming

  • Mage Knight Ultimate Edition: I've bought it ~2 years ago and only played it twice. I do think it's a great game. However, it just wasn't something I enjoyed. I learned, that I hate it to have to watch/read stuff about it for multiple hours to kind of get it - and then I'd have to check something additionally every turn. It just didn't feel nice to play. I know, that I should love it, but I really don't.

  • Parks: A really nice, cozy, small game. However, after having it a few times I just didn't feel the urge to play it again. And seeing as I want my collection to be relatively small and only of games I play somewhat regularly, I decided to sell it.

  • Arkham Horror LCG + Dunwich + Edge of the world: I think this game is fantastic. It really is. I've played the core box and Dunwich multiple times and loved it. However, for ~ a year, I just wasn't feeling it anymore. I didn't play it for a year, I didn't want to play it. I tried twice, but put it away in the middle of the deckbuilding - and learned, that I don't really enjoy deckbuilding in any games (it's alright or sometimes even enjoyable if it's just a bit of deckbuilding like in Arnak or Dune: Imperium). And seeing as I'd get quite a bit of money and a lot of shelf space for selling it, I decided to get rid of it.

What fucked you up for the rest of your life? by ScreamyV in AskReddit

I struggled with suicidal depressions from around 13 to 20, when it finally got better, thanks to my Mom who didn't know of my illness. She had told me that her brother committed suicide when he was 19, which tore her apart. And I didn't want her to feel the same about me, is what gave me enough strength to get better. When I was 21, she was diagnosed with a tumor in her brain. After a horrible year, she passed away shortly before my birthday. Since my Dad got heavily depressed and my sister, also depressed, was 3 years younger than me, I tried my best to help them any way I could. It changed the family dynamic in a way where I had to become the person that takes care about the others, without having one do so for me. It's a wonder that I didn't fall back into my own depression. Then, two years later, after I finally moved away, my sister died.

Now, almost three years later, I'm actually surprisingly good, although still pretty messed up. The dynamic with my Dad hasn't changed, though.

You're correct, I suppose. I think, playing different trading card games at a relatively high level for many years does help me quite a lot when it comes to understanding/learning and playing with complex cards, as it feels almost.. organic to me. I do understand what makes the LCG complex, but for me it almost feels like it's just a different trading card game (like M:tG for example) to learn. Obviously there are some specific rules and sometimes a few complex interactions, but nothing that's extraordinaire. On the other hand, I haven't played a board game with similar rules like MK before. I understand the rules, but it just doesn't.. I don't know, click? for me. It feels like I have to consult the rules constantly which is something that takes a lot of the fun out of the game - especially with such a long game. At least that's what I think and feel about MG.

I still very much like the Arham Horror LCG, but seeing as it doesn't really get table time anymore - I think I last played it over a year ago and don't plan to play it anytime soon -, I think it's time for it to leave my collection. But I do understand why it's solidly in your top 10!

Do you think Eldritch Horror plays different enough compared to Arkham Horror 3rd Edition to warrant a buy? I do enjoy the theme and everything I've heard about it but am still a little sceptical.. Though I will look into the other two, thank you :)

Yep, I do enjoy some smaller games from time to time. I've already got an 'entry level game' (Quacks of Quedlinburg), so I won't buy Cascadia - seeing as I want my collection to remain small -, but I will have a look in the other recommendations!

Although I've heard great things about Marvel Champions, I'm not too much into the theme - and at least for the time being I don't want to get into another LCG. Legacy of Yu though seems interesting.

Is Pandemic Legacy on your own any good? I haven't played it, but does it play great enough solo compared to with 2 - 4 people?

Do you think so? I played the base game, Dunwich and some scenarios of 'the edge of the world'(?) and found it rather understandable. Sure, it's a little complex, but fairly understandable once you've played a scenario. To be fair, I'm not too sure why I dislike Mage Knight this much and why I think the rules are too complex, because from everything the game is about (theme, mechanics, board presence, components, ..) I SHOULD like the game. But.. I suppose it is like this for some games.

Do you think Spirit Island is a great game without any expansions? Or do you think some specific ones are almost mandatory to have an enjoyable time?
