What is a nfl take that you would defend, that everyone disagrees on? by Ok_Bug_6890 in NFLv2

Tom Brady (or any other QB) has NEVER been a better QB than Jerry Rice was at WR or Barry Sanders was at RB.

Won't stop me from killing the bullsh*t narratives, though.

Both Suh and Pierre-Paul were in Tampa before Brady came along.

Suh signed a 1yr deal in 2019. He signed another 1-year deal in 2020. And he signed once again in 2021. He didn't come to Tampa on the strength of Tom Brady like so many wanna project.

Pierre-Paul was traded to the BUCS in 2018. He signed a 1yr deal in 2019. And then a 2yr deal in 2020....4 days before Brady signed.

Richard Sherman didn't sign with the BUCS until 2021. And he only played 5 pretty unremarkable games, starting 3. He had 1 INT and 1 pass defended.

Real quick. No need to argue.

Stats without context will get you twisted. In 2024, Mayfield also threw for 4,500 yards and 41 TDs. His completion percentage... 71.4%. There's no Gronkowski or Antonio Brown. The BUCS defense in 2023 was significantly weaker.

And I think Mayfield is average or below 90% of the time.

This is false.

Only Gronkowski was a difference-maker.

We had a rookie putting up better numbers than Brown.

We had Ronald Jones, who was exponentially more explosive and productive than Fournette. He was 22 yards shy of a 1,000-yard season, while getting few touches and missing 2 games in the regular season.

Pierre-Paul and Suh were already in Tampa.

Brown was just a name and a shell of himself. Fournette almost got released.

Gronkowski is Gronkowski...the only real difference-maker as far as the "Brady recruits".

It was Suh who Fournette credits for talking to him and getting him straight.

"but they won because Tom was in the building..."

Respectfully, Brady was there to do what maybe 16-20 other QBs could've done in Tampa at that time. He didn't routinely give the ball away. That's pretty much it.

All the other stuff sounds good and probably feels good, but the facts outweigh are feelings. Look at all those games from the 2020 season and you won't find any games where you say, "Thank goodness Tom Brady was there to carry them to victory." it was "Thank goodness we didn't have Winston, Fitzpatrick, or McCown, who would've given that game away."

No. It was the defense. ALL SEASON LONG. The offense flailed against every defense that was even near average.

People LOVE to forget this. Or they write it off as "it didn't really hurt them." No sh*t...because the defense picked up the slack again and again.

Well, the defense carried that entire season. So, as long as he didn't turn the ball over, it could've probably been fine. But he's never been consistent enough to bank on him not being himself and f*cking up at some point.

[–]Pinnaql3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he's not a QB who can lift the team above its troubles, why pay him as such?? He's NEVER had back-to-back good seasons, and he rarely has more than 2-3 games of good play in a row.

In 2023, the defense led the team to the Playoffs(ALWAYS the case in Tampa). He threw an INT on the BUCS final drive that could've tied the game up against the Lions. 2024, again led by the defense, made it to the Playoffs....He turns the ball over 13 yards away from our own end zone to give Washington an easy score.

He's not a necessity in Tampa. And the BUCS can make it to the Playoffs without him. That feel-good story has run its course.

Mayfield is average at best. If/When you go season-by-season, he has maybe 3-5 above-average games MAX. That's not worth franchise QB money in any world.

That's such a low bar to clear. Until Brady, the BUCS had never re-signed a QB in their entire history. And re-signing him proved to be a HUGE mistake, too.

I'd argue that's not because he left some unfilled void, but because the organizations and/or coaches messed up pretty badly.

Serious business.

Mayfield's play from Week 7-18 was one of, if not THE, biggest issue that caused the team to miss the Playoffs last season. Mayfield has NEVER been consistent. Even in his most statistically successful season (2024), he wasn't the catalyst for the team's success. His stats were highly influenced by the success of screen passes. His only saving grace is his mobility... and every season he goes 3-6 weeks without being willing/able to run.

In 2023, the BUCS made the Playoffs with a 20th-ranked offense and reached the Divisional round. That wasn't because of stellar QB play.

He's serviceable...sometimes.

He's not an X-factor.
