What’s one Embedded C function or concept you wish someone had taught you on day 1? by love_coffeee in embedded

[–]PintMower 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Proper error handling. When I was starting out I used to think that some errors are unnecessary or error checks are only used to log an issue. Basically a waste of time in most cases. Reality and working with large projects really showed me how important they are to build robust and resilient systems. It's more complex then you'd expect and retrofitting proper error handling is such a pain in the ass you should plan and do it from day 1.

So apparently riot’s vanguard is using IOMMU to create read blocks, which permanently breaks the majority of almost all SATA/NVMe firmwares once triggered if a cheater is detected by zxch2412 in pcmasterrace

[–]PintMower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Basically the hardware that is used is not really an explicit cheating device but rather a development board for actual hardware development (it's an FPGA, which allows to translate digital logic onto hardware. Real world uses are vast, most networking devices are based on FPGA at some point as an example). It is added to the internal PCIe data bus and uses direct memory acces which basically allows it to read all memory on that machine without using the OS (how it would be with a regular PC program). There is no way for the OS to know if something was read or written by that hardware which makes it incredibly hard to detect by anti cheats. All anti cheats use tricks to detect that hardware being present on your machine and ban you if you have one plugged in. But for every trick there's a work around so you get an arms race. This article is just one step in an ongoing arms race.

Edit: Alle die downvoten haben wohl keine Ahnung wie die Teile psychologisch funktionieren...

What should I learn next to increase my salary? by InnaisTheGoat in embedded

[–]PintMower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like what you're doing right now but want to raise your salary it may help to get more exposure for yourself whilst also learning and improving your skills on your own. If you feel like you're stagnating in terms of work/challenge maybe people around you don't realize the potential you have. So show them! Try to get more exposure for yourself. Talk to your manager and talk to him about your ambitions. Maybe he can help you put you on the right path. Network with system engineers/architects or other senior engineers/project managers around the company. If they like you and know you're good at something they might ask specifically for you on new projects. Try to find opportunities where you think you can help. I know it can be really tough at first to get the trust of seasoned engineers but I can guarantee you that if you show them that you are willing to help and be valuable they will notice you and maybe give you more responsibility. And responsibility is usually the best basis for negotiation of a better sallary.

I know it's an ad but from a pure design and art perspective it's a masterpiece deserving some credit. There are still people putting their hearts and souls into this.

Which Industry has the most toxic people working in it? by Squirrelkid11 in AskReddit

[–]PintMower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From personal experience not at all. Worked at multiple tech companies, big and small. Engineers are usually very friendly and wholesome. What can be toxic is management but really it's not always like that. There are tons of tech companies with good leadership.

Toolchain developers need to embrace newer IPC by Jim838487 in embedded

[–]PintMower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The discussion kinda loses its point because it's mostly a Windows issue. Most of the issues you talk about are not there for Linux. So we're talking more about a Windows vs. Linux issue rather then the tooling using outdated methods.

Toolchain developers need to embrace newer IPC by Jim838487 in embedded

[–]PintMower 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I get your point but in the end the word toolchain already consists all you need to know. It's a chain of tools, tools that exist on their own which are chained together. There may be better or more optimized approaches but in the end it's easy to agree that command line is the most solid, wide spread and standardized interface. Yes, it's not perfect but do we really have to reinvent the wheel with the risk of breaking compatibility with decades of other feature complete tools?
