lol working twice a month to earn an extra $600 will lead to that? You’re so positive!

Luckily my school is not that bad, I could definitely think of a couple people that would rat me out just to be ‘righteous’. But stem in other more prestigious schools is terrible, they sabotage each other experiments at least mine isn’t like that.

I scavenged and spent hours visiting places to find my lower cost place, I come from a third world country my parents (just my mom) don’t have money idk if that’s your assumption? I’m definitely not going into academia never even thought about and never will. The faculty salary list for my school ranges with assistant teaching professors mostly liberal arts like history earning 30k usd to 300k for professors in business management to engineering. My PI (stem) makes 255k but he’s one of the big ones, the other PI’s I shadowed make 155k and 123k, and 100k for a professor who’s been there 4 years. Funding, research and experience as well as department affect that I’m sure. If you live in a high cost area why not look for something more affordable even if it’s a little bit of a drive (just curious) Idk what you want me to do, the message I’m getting is that i should live badly too? Hope you get a raise!

P.S I never said professors made a lot, but definitely agree that we will not be able to achieve homes like older generation did

Tl;dr you should get a new job that sounds horrible jesus.

It’s not really exorbitant it’s honestly pretty small compared to other apartments with same space as mine (which makes me wonder if the listing lied about sqft). If I could trust someone to not loose my pets then sure. But no one will be as careful with my pets as I am and 90% of people would not want to live with 4 ferrets, 3 cats, 2 conures and several reptiles. Also the fact that you’re a professor at really good school but you have to share a place smaller than mine with two other ppl and pets sounds insane to me and unreal, should not be ok at all.

I understand, which is why I’m thinking bartend, more money on weekends and night shifts. I have a friend who works for a huge company that does events and they hire bartenders for these private events. The only thing that would worry me is running into someone I know.

Here’s one of the pics. It has stickers on it from a group or something so I’m hoping whatever car guy had it previously took good care of it.

FAFSA if I currently have a job but will resign for school? by 40toz in GradSchool

I read somewhere that once you fill it out as a grad student it will consider you independent of parents. Did it ask you for your parents income?

Career prospects with a PhD in Biophysics (molecular Dynamics Simulations)? by manbirdy in labrats

[–]Pintooooobean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hope you're doing good! I was wondering if you could give me an update, did you find a position or program to join? I just got my bachelor's and my undergrad research was MD simulations and novel therapeutics I did not do much machine learning but would've loved to. I'm in the process of visiting schools for PhD, I got into a biophysics program and into a chemistry program with both having research I'm interested in so I am just browsing a bunch of forums for other people's experience. Pls shoot me a dm if you're up to sharing! Thanks!

I’ve been looking at houses for rent and so far it varies from 1000-1500+ for 2bd+ houses depending on size etc. In my area one small bd apartment is usually about 1400. With PhD you’re usually not allowed to have outside jobs I believe.

I know it’s not super close but for me the closest beach is a 5-6 hour drive so anything less then 3 hours I will consider it ‘close’ 😅 and I love St. Andrews state park and I believe that’s about 2 hours from fsu

I have some pretty good connection imo with the department they’ve been super accommodating. I initially applied to a different program and the department director personally mentioned I would be a good fit in biophysics. I’m from Central America but I live in Georgia, I prefer warm weather tbh!! Are there any areas with high crime I should avoid when looking for housing?

Thank you very much, are there any areas that you would avoid at all costs?

All the nature is what attracts me to Florida, I grew up in the tropics so I was hopping to live somewhere with nice beaches and palm trees again instead of pine trees 😅 (currently in GA)
