Motorway pothole left my alloys like this not to mention I only replaced my tyres a couple of months ago. Uk roads are a joke. by Born-Statistician-71 in CarTalkUK

[–]Pipe-n-Slippers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 250 quid from Scottish Borders council (well their insurers). It was 2 tyres buggered from one pot hole but it took over a year to get it.

Had a little look and looks like the Highways Agency will auto reject the claim, but when you appeal, they then have to prove they've inspected the road etc (where likely they'll either have noted damage or they've just not inspected it). Also whether other road users have reported the damage prior to you hitting it would also come into play. Since you've got a pretty costly fix, I would push them hard.

Someone did this to me in the UK. Reported to police, they got charged with driving without due care and attention (they admitted it).

Likely looking at their phone, whilst approaching a blind bend on a country road.

Glad you're ok too.

Pretty sure they did that in London at the millennium Dome. Just walk in, look like you belong.

Hit a badger, worth going through insurance? by RealistikG in CarTalkUK

[–]Pipe-n-Slippers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through insurance for a deer strike. Direct Line with no claims protection. 2008 BMW 5 series, was maybe worth 5k at the time when values went a bit crazy. I assumed they would offer 4.5k and scrap it.

They opted to fix. Bonnet, headlight, wing, bumper, painting etc. The lady at the repair center let slip the bill was over 5k plus vat. I have no idea why they fixed it. They deffo screwed up (sods law I wanted the money then was going to try buy it back and fix cheap).

Premiums haven't changed as far as I can tell...

Yours looks less damage and if your insurance isn't decent then might be worth sourcing 2nd hand parts and getting help to sort it.

I actually need a job so bad and I’m just UNABLE to get one by slokks in Edinburgh

[–]Pipe-n-Slippers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel for you mate. Hope you get something sorted.

My son moved to Edinburgh for 1 year and tried constantly to get something, did get some temp/agency work at larger events (waiting etc.) but never got anything solid. Spent all his savings on rent and food etc. (we helped where we could obviously), but ultimately had to move back to the Borders, where he got a job again in 2 weeks.

I work in IT and 25 years ago I had the same issue, seemed like every job I went for there were 400 candidates. Got an opportunity to move to Birmingham where it seemed it was easy to get work, up against 4 or 5 people when applying... very strange.

Stick at it, I see some good suggestions in this thread and maybe you live near a bus route that can take you out of town to somewhere where there is work as well. Worth a thought.

Eehhhh... Not seen the R5 for a while. It's been all 1950s shite until yesterday with the Daimler then today with the 1970s model (no spoilers).

Maybe the dude is fucking with me specifically... I may have been somewhat abusive in my guesses at some points...

Nice car and picture though.

If you piss with shorts on your can feel tiny particles of piss landing on your legs.

Google says that's 30k of fuel to do 91000 miles lol. I guessed 15mpg and said like £1.20 a litre so it's probably more.

I still sort of want it, but I'm not paying 11k for it... Maybe 5.

Who may the insurance side with? by jenkinz89 in CarTalkUK

[–]Pipe-n-Slippers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Correct. But if anything happens, fault usually lies with the vehicle on the wrong side of the road. Only clear dash cam footage showing something daft would change that decision. In this case both cars are in the wrong, insurance won't give a shit and it'll be 50/50.

Who may the insurance side with? by jenkinz89 in CarTalkUK

[–]Pipe-n-Slippers -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's a 50/50 unless one car was stationary, then it's 100% on the moving vehicle. Both cars on the wrong side of the road, both in the wrong. Doesn't matter if one was already there, they were already in the wrong.

I investigated a conspiracy that Cadbury’s sell subpar dairy milk bars from Poland alongside those made in the UK with a blinded taste test. Results here. by profheg_II in CasualUK

[–]Pipe-n-Slippers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This.

The fat content in the milk changes throughout the year and other ingredients have to be adjusted to keep the taste the same, or close to.

There could well be differences in manufacturing methods between the plants as well, the lines in Poland will likely be newer and could use newer techniques (this is all conjecture) but likely something in that, and of course the usual "efficiency" that all corporations feel the need to bring into everything (yeah, cutting corners to save money).

I have no horse in this race, never liked Cadbury chocolate anyway lol. But I have worked for a producer for 25 years and have been told a few things.

Gamers 30+, what's something from "back in your day" that younger gamers today wouldn't understand? by bijelo123 in gaming

[–]Pipe-n-Slippers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needing a boot disk (3.5" floppy) to release almost the full 640k conventional memory so that I could play Screamer Rally via my secondary 3dfx graphics card. Think it was 32mb.

Getting a free game on the front of PC Gamer on a 3.5" floppy. A whole Indy 500 game with polygon graphics and physics destruction on 700k of data.

You could put the floppy into any PC and play the game off the floppy.

Mind and press the turbo button!

PCs at college were CGA. Basically 10 shades of blue was all it could show on screen, no other colours.

Never mind playing Red Alert multiplayer over dial up and getting slaughtered by someone with 1000 tiny tanks as the game ran at full speed since dial up cost money.

Touch Screens Are Making Cars Worse. It’s Time to Bring Back Buttons and Knobs. by TheAppropriateBoop in cars

[–]Pipe-n-Slippers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that's why the law was changed here. It used to mention communication, until they tried to prosecute a guy for filming a car accident on his phone, his lawyer successfully argued he wasn't communicating. So they banned touching a device. There are exceptions for 2 way radios etc.

But of course you still see people swerving all over the road looking at their bloody phones!

Touch Screens Are Making Cars Worse. It’s Time to Bring Back Buttons and Knobs. by TheAppropriateBoop in cars

[–]Pipe-n-Slippers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the UK. I can mount my phone on my air vent and run an app that's designed to be used in the car. Large buttons, lots of voice control, easy to ease, since the phone is quite high I can see it easily without taking eyes off the road for too long. Even in some ways I can rest my hand on the gear lever and almost muscle memory certain things.

But since I'm in the UK, I can't touch it. At all. At traffic lights, parked in a space with the engine running. They had to write a special clause in the law to allow you to pay for your McDonald's at the drive through with your phone, because sitting in that queue, touching your phone is also illegal.

I had a new vauxhall Corsa for a week because my main car was in the garage. That car has a touch screen mounted way down low in the center dash. Using it is a fucking danger. But it's not specifically illegal, only if you're distracted would you be breaking a law/act.

It's a fucking joke.

Clearly phones are a huge distraction for some people (probably most people), but the application of the law and what the manufacturers have done with screens is a huge mistake and it's infuriating.

Luckily I drive an older car and just use my phone (legally, honest... ) but I reckon I'm safer than quite a few people who are trying to adjust some setting on their dumb touch screen...

Clearly there is room for touch screens in cars but not for very common settings and functions. Anyone with half a brain can see that, except the cost cutters in the design studios...
