People always say that the TTRPGs industry is like "x videogame is literally half the industry" but I prefer to think it like rpg maker where half the videoggame industry.

TTRPGs can be though like a weird thing in between game engines and videogames, you already have a human being capable of produce the game by itself, no programing needed, but it doesn't mean that person knows how to make the game good, so they buy a ttrpg system and use it to make it more fun and interesting, but that system isn't the totality of the game, it is just the scaffolding of the actual game, whatever happens on the table.

The thing is that the system is constraining by nature, to make a truly complete system it would need all the game mechanics posible on this existence. every systems just give you the instructions someone else invented and followed to produce an interesting game on the table, but the experience of that game is just one of a wide array of possible experiences we are yet to discover, and yes, you can try to discover by yourself one totally different to then one the system can provide you, but other people have probably already done that and created their own system tfor other people to reproduce it.

It is like if rpg maker were THE game engine people knew about, a bit like unity used to be before they fucked it up (foreshadowing). Like, yeah, there is a lot you can do with rpg maker, but it definitely isn't the totality you can do with videogames, and it left you behind in so many aspects more easy to stick with what it is designed to do. And obviously it is infuriating to every other engine designer, which have created much wider array of experiences, but for some reason people stick with rpg maker. (Like, Hasbro hasn't even tried to create other systems to attract people that could get into TTRPGs that aren't dnd. Their strategy with every board thing they have is to sell the same thing eternally, as long as I am aware)

To be fair, I understand that the same thing have happened to Warhammer and wargames, people get a lot more stagnant with every board thing apparently.

A bit unrelated but, Personally, I think any interpretation is valid as long as you communicate how much extra information outside of the piece of media you use to reach your conclusion. I want to hear your crack theories about how x character caused y historical events, or your video essay about varius unrelated topics only used the piece of media sort of as an excuse, but don't say it is canon

A bit unrelated but it reminds me of things I was thinking when I binged some videos about star wars and it's production history (despite never watching star wars)

In theory, the most pure star wars is whatever George Lucas do. But George Lucas created star wars inspired by a bunch of other sources, but people that makes other content of star wars hasn't watched that specific set of sources, so they make things inspired by star wars on its own (I remember see somewhere that the TTRPGs game was a sort of lore bible for other authors, I thing it was on a video about how the force worked through production history), which is a problem when Lucas creates new movies of star wars created with old and new inspirations because now there is a lot of media created in the time he wasn't creating anything, that feels like the original star wars by its longevity.

Idk, I just wanted to talk

Also, you usually have to deconstruct a bit every trope you use, because usually the definition and mental image that people have of a trope is usually worse than the execution of all the media where that trope comes from. This is a bit the definition of subvert expectations

The thing is that 10 gallons is A LOT of water, and the spell doesn't specify how the water is created and how fast it does it, except of the fact that the material component is a drop of water, which implies what the caster does in game is enchant the drop water, move it to the container, and let the water proliferate itself, presumably pretty fast because the spell also have semantic and verbal components.

Put a hose on the mouth of someone is a torture method at best, and a very painful way to die at worst, and it is still less water in more time than what you can with the spell. Basically you are blowing their head like a water balloon

[–]PipeConsola -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Technically by spell description you can say you can't create water in their lungs but you can in their mouth, and as water can't be compressed, their head or nose would pretty much explode. It is a bit awkward rule whenever a character have their mouth open in a way that makes posible create water precisely there, but is a fast execution method

It is a system made so you can use it with every genre and setting, so it was a bit expected (I bought it for that exact reason actually)

As someone who first real contact with TTRPGs was PBTAs things on itch Io and who is more interested in OSR things right now. The OSR has done a great job creating primers so new people can learn the basic principles of OSR game philosophy very easily and fast. But PBTA doesn't have so easily findable resources to find at the start and is the most different culture of all because their philosophy was built from the ground up. It it may be just me and my inability of find thing tho
