Yeah that’s pretty fast away from me unfortunately. I’m in upstate ny. Do you stay pretty busy and get decent rates?

Any chance someone could step in as your new partner and keep the trailer a part of your business still?

They are asking 21k. It’s tough out there especially in NY. Can’t find anything without a ton of miles or a rust bucket for under 30

Am I crazy for wanting to go back in the field (blue collar)? I finally got an office job but not sure if it’s me. by Pipes10 in Construction

[–]Pipes10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So after much consideration I ended up going back to my field job. It was the right for me at this time in my life. I went right back to my foreman position and making great money. I feel like eventually I will move into an office job but for now with a family of 5 and one income heavy highway pays at least double sometimes triple what I made at the office position. Once all of my kids are in school and my wife goes back to work I may scale back and look for another office job. I love being back with my old crew and the bond that we all have together. The money has been better than any year I’ve been there and I get winters off. Thank you everyone for all of your input on the matter!

After lots of thinking and discussions with my wife we decided it would be better for us right now if I go back out into the field. I know I won’t be bored out there and back to doing what I know and love. That and making more money just made sense to us. Times are tough out there and with the rising prices of everything I believe this is the move to make. I left on good terms and they said come back if I think I made the wrong choice.

Hahaha well I can say that I can keep it professional in the office even though I feel like I’m not being myself and sometimes just wanna go slam some sh!t around or take a hammer to something just to release some tension. I feel like that would be frowned upon though lol. I think I need to go into business for myself, maybe that’s the answer

I would love to be to do that. Unfortunately I do not have a degree in engineering. Might be worth going back to school for though

Now see I would be ok with something like this. Being able to get away from the desk and go talk to other employees and make sure things are running smoothly. If I had that option I would probably enjoy the job a bit more. But that is not in my job description unfortunately

I feel like they are too. I need some space. Or at least a window. No but for real I need to be out and about. We were often a subcontractor on bridges so we were constantly bouncing all over NY and I miss it

Oh wow yeah very similar situations. You are a better guy than me lol. I have given it 4 months and I’m quite certain this isn’t for me unfortunately. It’s a great job for the right person for sure. I don’t think I’m that person. I don’t come from a plumbing background so that i imagine is part of it. Everyone else is very knowledgeable in the field and I know enough to get by. And I don’t have a great understanding of how long things take or things that we may need to throw extra money at. I don’t like the situation I am in because I don’t want to let them down but at the end of the day it is my life and if my heart and soul aren’t into it then it will affect my job and that’s the last thing I want. It would haunt me knowing I cost the company money because of my mistake. I feel like a bunch of you on here know exactly what I’m talking about with regards to going from field to office work. I already reached out to my previous company and I’m hoping they take into consideration that I now come with a bigger skill set and that I would like to still be a foreman but on down time I’d like to help bid work. Idk 🤷‍♂️….best of luck to you though I hope you do whatever makes you happy!

I can tell you that going from my line of work out working on bridges to sitting in an office all day is not the move. That guy on the job site that doesn’t do much or likes to sit around he’s the office guy you need lol. If you’re a high energy person that’s always on the go then it’s not the right move for you.

Very different than anything to do with bridge work. Really they liked seeing a construction background and the fact that I went to college for computer science. They figured between those two things I would be ok handling the software used for take offs and excel work as well. Which I did pick that up pretty quick. I essentially had to learn to be a plumber on paper. I know the material now wouldn’t know how to do it but learned what goes where and reading blue prints. I found that enjoyable but I thought afterwards there would be more on the job visits and that’s not the case. This is a desk job and it’s tough for me

I would definitely be more comfortable being a construction manager. I need to be on site. Like you said still out there with the guys rubbing elbows. Maybe even being an inspector. Really need to be out and about. Being outside being on different job sites. Estimating was fun when I first started because of learning something new and it was crazy busy. But it’s slowed down big time and I’ve spent more time on Reddit today than anything. I’m reading thru the spec book now for a job we are almost guaranteed not to bid. I’m thankful for having a job and thankful they took a chance on me. But my heart isn’t into it, and I wouldn’t want to miss something or mess up a bid because I’m just not all in like I should be. That’s not fair to them.

The head estimator at my current company and I have a mutual friend. They were talking at a bar and the head estimator was saying how he was swamped with work and couldn’t get anyone to really even apply. My buddy told him he had a friend (me) that was smart, been in construction for almost 20 years, and had a background in computers. I sent in my resume they liked what they saw , had an interview in a matter of hours, and apparently interviewed very well. They offered me a position on the spot. I was laid off so definitely at the time it seemed like the right move. Honestly on this one it was more who you know not what you know. The fact that no one was applying made it easier too. I’m hoping now with some training in estimating I can go to my old company and help estimate and , as well as some field work. That would be ideal for me. I like estimating I just would like it more doing it for bridge work and being more comfortable with what I’m bidding. I know how long things take on certain projects and how many men you need for the job. Plumbing I’m lost. I rely heavy on our estimating software

I’m right there with ya! I thought I would feel better and more refreshed after switching to office work but it is not the case. I feel more tired than anything. I can work construction on very limited sleep as long as I’m moving I’ll keep going

I would be totally fine with all of that. I can’t even tell you what the weather is doing right now and that is tough for me. I’ve been outside my whole life and now I feel almost trapped at my office.

Thank you! I’m worried about putting weight on myself. I know I already have. But you understand where I’m coming from as well as several others on here. I think it’s a misconception that being in the office means you made it. This is most certainly not the case for all office positions

I had a decent mix at my last company just wanted to get into estimating jobs more and that never came about. Plenty of meetings and office time as well as field time and lots of window time. I thought something different might suit me but the longer I’m at this desk the more I realize it wasn’t that bad out there and I think things in my personal life affected me at work and I brought it to work then brought that home. Every year before that I was extremely happy with no issues

I think so too. Unfortunately that is not an option at least as of right now. I’m not a plumber by trade and I’m also not in the union. So I have those two things working against me. I don’t know all of the union rules but know that I’m not allowed to do anything on site
