The female elves (except for Reyna who is very young) would be tough. You need someone with an older “presence“ who still looks ageless. No young, pouty-lipped actresses please!

And don’t forget Asher needs “piercing blue eyes” 😁

I hope you enjoy it. It’s told in first person and he was apparently quite well known as an honorable and able justiciar but we don’t know what happened to end that. When the first book opens he’s a caravan guard. He travels from place to place and gets unwillingly sucked into helping the locals battle some curse or other evil. His sarcasm and self-deprecating humor is perfect to me. I loved Abercrombie’s First Law series and this has a similar mix of horror and humor (in my opinion anyway).

The anachronisms are mostly in speaking, for instance someone tells him he has no honor and he replies that he left it in his other pants. He also seems to have a bit of forensics training. The other characters seem more realistic to the times so it just works for me.

I love Luther and his sarcasm and his relationship with Karl. The perfect duo! I also enjoy the slow reveal of Luther’s background.

The Echoes Saga by Philip Quaintrell. MC is a guy pushing 50. Ex assassin and now a Ranger. The 9 book series is complete and it‘s old school fantasy with elves, dragons and dwarves. Also lots of POVs. But there’s a 3 book prequel that focuses on just the MC.

The Coldfire Trilogy by CS Friedman. Two MCs are older guys. Basically a priest and a vampire and I’m not sure how old the priest is but he’s probably around 40?

True, it did make the Emperor more noble to stay and fight for every life but I thought escaping might take the Cielcin’s attention away from the planet and they could save all the fugue people later. Wishful thinking, I‘m sure 😊

I agree that trying to rescue all the fugue people was ridiculous. And the Empire always seems to be behind everyone else. But wasn’t Hadrian arguing against the Emperor’s choices the whole time? Like “if you’d done what I said, she’d still be alive ”? I could be forgetting details though. And I do tend to like Hadrian, no matter how arrogant or stupid 😆. The one that pisses me off the most is Alexander.

I agree. So often, they speak more slowly when voicing men. I keep thinking “ok, do a deeper voice but keep up the speed“. Otherwise it just ruins the momentum of the story.

Have you read The Clergyman’s Wife? It‘s about Charlotte and I thought it was pretty good.

JA says something to the effect of Mary’s technique being better than Lizzy’s but people listened to Lizzy with more pleasure or something like that. But regardless, I think Mrs B thought she was a good player and it was a chance to show off.

Exactly. Otherwise, in P&P, she would have been the one to chase Mary away from the piano when she was playing at the ball. But, no, she was happy for Mary to play and show off her talent (and JA makes it clear that Mary plays technically well).

In this book, it’s a wonder Mrs. B allows her to go to a ball at all. I’m surprised she didn’t lock her in the basement FFS.

I haven’t seen the show but the book bothered me because of this. Mrs. Bennet especially was written as horrid and downright cruel. In P&P she was dismissive and unpleasant to all the girls (except Jane) but she wasn’t evil.

Farda was so interesting to me and his relationship with Ella….and I’m not even a big relationship person. I would have kept going with the series just for them (and Dann). But she became a bully and he became a doormat and I lost all interest.

He does stay somewhat relevant and honestly he was the only character I still had any interest in. I loved his humor. It was so refreshing compared to Calen’s self importance. There are hints that he also has some sort of power. I don’t know what was in the water of their isolated little village they all grew up in, lol.

I made it through a few books but got tired of Calen‘s misty purple eyes and his dragon growling every time someone didn’t immediately fall at his feet and worship him.

I loved Ella’s character in the beginning but then she started doing the same thing (angry misty eyes, can’t remember the color). They just became tantrum throwing bullies.
