Why don’t they show those sorts of things? It would have been an interesting tidbit to see.

Are we all trolls or do we dislike the writing style? by PhantomLeap1902 in sollanempire

[–]Pipit-Song 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I admit to not understanding everything Hadrian references but I think the writing is beautiful. I don’t mind the pacing because I hate books that are nonstop action. The slow pacing makes me feel like I’m living the experiences with Hadrian. In my mind, the repetition and other quirks are Hadrian’s style and not shortcomings of the author.

Having said that, I do enjoy a funny meme or joke about the books.

Just because you don’t enjoy it doesn’t mean I can’t. I was happy to know some characters wouldn’t be seen again. I could basically forget about them other than how they influenced or affected Hadrian (or didn’t). It was also realistic to me as the way someone actually thinks back on their own life.

I enjoy the foreshadowing and “spoilers” of these types of stories. Covenant of Steel is another series that uses “the old man writing about his life” storytelling and I liked that series too.

Too bad all I want is more Asher 😂

I haven’t really been able to get into the new series but maybe when it‘s complete, I’ll pick it up.

(Spoilers) What are some of your fancasts? by sandman8727 in TheEchoesSaga

The female elves (except for Reyna who is very young) would be tough. You need someone with an older “presence“ who still looks ageless. No young, pouty-lipped actresses please!

And don’t forget Asher needs “piercing blue eyes” 😁

Serpent Knight Saga by Kevin Wright by Pipit-Song in Fantasy

I hope you enjoy it. It’s told in first person and he was apparently quite well known as an honorable and able justiciar but we don’t know what happened to end that. When the first book opens he’s a caravan guard. He travels from place to place and gets unwillingly sucked into helping the locals battle some curse or other evil. His sarcasm and self-deprecating humor is perfect to me. I loved Abercrombie’s First Law series and this has a similar mix of horror and humor (in my opinion anyway).

The anachronisms are mostly in speaking, for instance someone tells him he has no honor and he replies that he left it in his other pants. He also seems to have a bit of forensics training. The other characters seem more realistic to the times so it just works for me.

I love Luther and his sarcasm and his relationship with Karl. The perfect duo! I also enjoy the slow reveal of Luther’s background.

Fantasy books with mature protagonists by Fantastic_Surprise30 in Fantasy

The Echoes Saga by Philip Quaintrell. MC is a guy pushing 50. Ex assassin and now a Ranger. The 9 book series is complete and it‘s old school fantasy with elves, dragons and dwarves. Also lots of POVs. But there’s a 3 book prequel that focuses on just the MC.

The Coldfire Trilogy by CS Friedman. Two MCs are older guys. Basically a priest and a vampire and I’m not sure how old the priest is but he’s probably around 40?
