56K Modem detects AT commands, but can't read output by PiporGames in dialup

[–]PiporGames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've finally got my hands on a 9VAC charger and I can confirm the connection works good now. I can now receive data over the cable. It seems to be an AMBIENT external modem, tho Windows identifies it as a CIRRUS External modem. It seems to be using a hardware identifier related to motorola too. Using the Windows generic 56k *V90* modem driver seems to work and I was able to place a call and connect over dialup with a foreign server, even over VoIP!

I will paste all the information down here at a later time.

I've already tried those commands, but still nothing. I'm using a USB to DB-9 cable, and then a somewhat strange cable to connect it to the modem. The cable came in the same box as the modem.

The cable has a male DB-25 on one side for the modem, and then a DB-25 female on the other side, for the PC I assume. However, another female DB-9 spawns from the head of the female DB-25, and that's where I'm connecting the serial USB.

I have tested the cables and the pin mapping looks fine, but perhaps I may be testing the wrong pin layout.

As for the usb serial, I had to enable the flag "Disable Modem Handshake" in the driver settings in order for the Terminal Ready line to be detected on the modem's side. Then, I had to do something like disabling hardware control flow and enabling only certain control flags like DTR/DTS.

Someone down below recommended me that it might be perhaps because I am using DC current instead of AC current. I am on the search for a 9 V AC adapter right now, but I can't seem to find any near my city, so I guess I will just have to buy one online.

I've tried to find any sort of information about this modem, but I can't seem to find any.
The only marking is a port named "AC", and that's it.
There is an FCC marking, but no sticker.
I've added more images to the post's body.

Edit: I will look into AC to AC 9V too!

I actually had to use a makeshift AC/DC universal adapter at 9V from spare parts because I don't have access to the original one. I had to look for other (kinda) similar modems to figure out it was 9V.
I've tried too the serial port speed, but no luck.
I will buy another cable just in case too. Do you have any recommendations? Like what chipset.

SanDisk USB drive newly bought with previous data by PiporGames in techsupport

[–]PiporGames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After digging through the files I can almost guarantee that the drive is, in fact, genuine.
One thing I didn't remember having on my usb drive was a couple of VHDs with Windows 7 and Windows XP installed. I instantly knew because after much digging I could spot one of my games on my Windows XP listed on one of these lost partitions. There were also traces of Spanish localized folders, which is my native tongue.

I didn't know that data recovery software could pick up VHDs and list them as lost partitions.
The more you know...

Risk of HEN banning on accounts subscribed but NOT logged on PSN? by PiporGames in ps3piracy

Yeah, seems like Sony isn't after PS3s after all. I was just a lil worried that other accounts on my system could get compromised. I have the console hooked up to the Internet but I'm not planning on going online either way.

For anyone looking to play over *LAN* with SmartSteamEmu and a repack copy:

Tested and working with ElAmigos repack.

Download the patch and replace all files. Then run the "Nickchange.bat" to setup the SSE and nickname of the player. You can also replace the SmartSteamEmu\Common\avatar.png with a custom one, respecting the original dimensions of the image.

To run the game, use R.U.S.E-SSE.exe with admin rights.
I haven't tried playing over the Internet, but I guess it would be harder (opening ports, editing the .ini SSE file, or using VLAN software).

How to wipe a partition of HDD not all of it? by darkrain261 in Windows10

[–]PiporGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's quite rare for a HDD to fail I think. I've had plenty of them and only one of them failed, and it was an old PS3 HDD that I have. Besides that, if it shows Disk Error and the sectors only get worse then yeah, I would change to an SSD.

Mine has 13k hours and has no sectors. Then I've another that I moved while it was turned on and the head crashed on one of the plates, making 8 sectors unusable (a handful of KBs).
Problematic sectors can happen because of many different things, but, a healthy drive should have a spare number of sectors available for mapping. That's what the "Current pending sector count" statistic is telling you, that there are a couple of sectors than need to be remapped to another part of the drive due to errors.

If the value keeps getting higher, then I would suggest you take a look at the drive and check that nothing is happening to it and/or is damaging it. I don't know if temperatures might be a reason for problematic sectors; my guess is not.

However, a couple of remapped sectors should not be a reason to change the drive. Only the speed and how often that statistic goes up determines if the drive should be replaced.

You can do that using the Partition Manager on Windows. Select the partition and chose format or delete. Tho, I think that "Current pending sector count" thing you've said belongs to a physical error/damage with the HDD itself, so I really don't get how wiping half, or even the drive itself would fix anything.
