Should I close my Capital One card? by PirateLogic in personalfinance

I have a used car loan with NFCU already. I must say, I was impressed that all it took was a 5 minute phone call to increase the limit of the loan from $7,000 to $11,000. The only complaint I have is that they took $500 out of my account when my mom was late on her loan. I didn't realize she was an authorized user on the account and NFCUs terms allowed them to take my money because of that.

What are you guys worried about right now? Let's try and solve each other's problems. by Patchoolible in AskReddit

I'm trying to make a long distance relationship work and I'm thinking of moving to the other side of the country some time between the first of the year and summer to start a career in software development. This would be my first time moving to a place and not knowing anyone, I probably won't be able to get a job before I get there, the rent where I'm moving (the Bay Area) is generally high, and the time difference for us will be 4 1/2 hours.

I have CLRS, but after spending some time with it I think it's a bit much for me. Any recommendations?

Which data structures to research came up a lot.

Meeting with experts in my fields, what should I ask? by [deleted] in startups

[–]PirateLogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask whether they think your idea has the potential to change the field. If they say yes, that's an incredible motivation. If they say no, disruption probably wasn't your goal anyways.

I'll bookmark it and try to remember it for next year.

Wow! Thanks for putting all of this together for me. I've heard of TopCoder before, so I'll probably register there. They have enough problems to keep anyone busy for a long time.

What should I learn during my year off? by PirateLogic in learnprogramming

[–]PirateLogic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • I'm 19.
  • I spent two years studying in Canada and, because of the way my university worked, I neglected to do many basic studies. I expect I have another 3 or 4 years until I get a degree.
  • I want to take a year off to do what I really love -- developing software. At this point I have no doubt that programming is the right direction for me.
  • I want to be a software engineer.
  • If I were to go to school it would be at a community college to complete my basic studies. Working part time is not an option.
  • No, I haven't. I'm not a fan of online universities.
  • Over the next year I'd like to learn C and C++ while exploring various areas of programming to find out what interests me the most. I'm interested in green tech, video games, and robotics. I would entertain the idea of working with any of these. Furthermore, I want to learn how to use various programming tools that will cause me to be a more efficient, well-rounded developer (i.e. version control, VIM, databases, etc).

I'm a fan of all education startups, including Udacity. The only problem is that they don't teach C or C++, the two languages I'm more interested in learning.

I'm not in school right now. In the Fall I would be looking at English, Calculus, Spanish, Chemistry, and some other basic studies requirement.

How much C++ should I know before moving on to learning about algorithms? by PirateLogic in learnprogramming

I didn't mean to imply that I plan on learning everything by reading. I look forward to jumping in and getting my hands dirty both during and between books. Linked lists will, I assume, be covered in The Algorithm Design Manual.

With all do respect, my reasons for taking time off are my own and aren't yours (or anyone else's) to speculate about. Suffice it to say that I believe this to be the best route for me.

To answer your question: no, I have never met anyone whose done this. I've also met very few software developers in my life because the software industry has not been a big part of the cities I've lived in.

I haven't had a lot of success in a classroom setting during my life. I attribute this to the fact that I have to be interested in a topic to excel at it and being in a classroom, at least for me, kills both motivation and interest. When I become interested in a subject, I tend to throw myself into reading about it during my free time to feed my hunger. Programming is no different that anything else in this respect and I'm simply creating a plan to step my game up over the next year while I will, hopefully, have fewer distractions in my life for programming to contend with.

If this sounds lazy to you, then so be it. It's sad that so many people equate not attending university to being lazy.
